Over the years I’ve received so many questions about how to assign inputs signals on the DP-24. This was often in relation to other processes that people struggled with. Until now, I haven’t focused on this topic with this unit specifically, so I wanted to take the time to properly address it. I hope this information serves useful.

another fantastic video my friend. I have to say, I have a degree in audio engineering but when I first picked up this desk, I had absolutely no idea how to navigate it. your knowledge and understanding of this unit are outstanding. And the way you explain each topic is also outstanding. You make me fell like we are just a couple of guys hanging out talking music. And for me, it really helps me comprehend what you are saying. Thanks so much for all your efforts. It is greatly appreciated!

Very well done my friend! But, believe it or not, being a computer illiterate,(which is why I choose the "stand allone" recording device route rather than the modern computer recording route that so many use), I wish your info could be simplified even more! Like when discussing assigning stereo inputs, what about the pan knobs for each stereo track? Should one be left while the other right? Am I to run 2 lines from my guitar preamp to the recorder, one left, one right, or do I run just the left mono output of preamp to recorder, and the recorder splits the signal L & R? I realize many of you out there will think I'm an idiot asking such questions, but I believe recording/mastering and any audio tech stuff is an artform unto itself, taking years to master to any degree. I've chosen solely to master (or at least try!) songwriting & musicianship first, and let me tell ya, I'm pretty dam good people!! I just want to be able to sit down, glass of wine, $4,000 Les Paul, keyboard and a mic, and record halfway decent sounding songs, so I can save them, download them, put'em on disc's to give to musicians I hire for real studio and live gigs. I'm realizing that I'm going to have to spend 6 months just to be able to record a few tracks for one dam song!?! Just to let you know, I've acquired my Tascam DP24SD because my old Tascam 8 track finally wore out, and I figured I'd stick with Tascam cuz the learning curve wouldn't be so bad. I figured wrong! Thanks guys. Sean Black

Hi ! I have a question for you : finally ( July 2023) we have bought the DP 32 ,after using for a long time the DP 008 ; i'm asking you , if i use a 16 gb Sd card that has alredy be " cleaned out" from the previous songs recorded with the DP 008 , when inserted in the DP 32 , do i have in any case to " initialize" it , or , because was already used , is ready for the new use with the new multitrack recorder? Thank you so much for your informations. All the best to you, Patrick from Italy 👋

I've been searching for a video, about adding a graphic equalizer or mixer to the Tascam dp-24...or is this not needed...?
@PowercoatMusic

It all depends on what process you need to record to be the most productive. That will give you the best answer. For additional information, watch my presentation "Home Studio Builds & Updates: How to Discover Exactly What You Need", on this channel. I use mine for mastering FMDs only, but again that's my perspective. Yours may be different. I just picked up the Tascam DP24/32SD. When recording on different tracks do I have to change the mic input? if not could someone please explain what I need to do after I assign the first track and want to record on the second track without plugging the mic into the second mic slot?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic Жыл бұрын
Following the same directions for assigning the first track to the first input. Except for the 2nd track, when you're on the "Track" screen, move the cursor to the track you want and then use the dial to select the input you desire (A-H). Thanks for watching.

If I plug an electric piano into input A and select stereo tracks 13 and 14 to receive that signal will I end up with the piano piece on both those tracks? Presumably they can only be panned to the same part of the mix. Yes?

This may be a dumb question but.....mono inputs go to either the left or right speaker and stereo inputs will go to both?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Never dumb questions, only dumb answers, right? I believe you may be misunderstanding how the DP-24 works in this regard. The inputs are not mono or stereo, the tracks are. This relates to track assignments. You can assign one input source to multiple tracks simultaneously. However, you cannot assign multiple input sources to the same track. You can also assign an input source to a stereo bus. Stereo tracks are always simultaneously recorded (2 tracks), mono tracks are recorded to just one track. You cannot record to a single track of a stereo track pair. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

@@PowercoatMusic with real drums though, I have three mics, an overhead condenser, a snare and a bass drum mic. I guess I'm confused and don't see a video on how to move back and forth on the display screen while managing the 3 inputs on 3 different tracks a once.
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobc.5698 With real drums, I would strongly suggest sub-mixing. With this you can have your sub mixer beside you and not worry so much about the latter. Hope that helps.

OK, 10:52 We really need to talk about this because I'm confused. I'm using the DP32-SD, and I cannot route, let's say, my MPC X has two XLRs coming out, one for left and one for right, which would make it a stereo pair. So no matter how many times I try to route the left (input B) and the right (input C) into stereo track 9/10 on the DP 32. SO B would be assigned to 9, and C would be assigned to 10.... so what you are basically saying is that that CANNOT happen, right? This will lead me to ask why I even have stereo tracks on the DP 32 in the first place. What are they good for? How do I create a stereo pair then two mono tracks one all the way left and one all the way, right? Or does it automatically do that (with a MONO track) while mastering in the mastering section? Another words while mastering it automatically makes a mono track a stereo pair master track? My options when assigning my MPC X to any stereo track is AA, AB, BB, CC, CD, DD, DE, EE, EF, FF, FG, GG, GH, HH... NEVER BC on 9/10 So I will assume that is because of what you have stated at 10:52. This is really confusing, and if that's the case, I could have just used 32 mono tracks instead of 8 on the DP32... and why does the DP24 have more mono tracks (12) than the DP32 (8) does? It would be really awesome to have these questions answered.

At track 9, can you just start back up at input A, and it doesn't record over the first A you had recorded?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Inputs (A-H) are not tracks, you assign inputs to tracks. To answer your question, it will only do that if the input signal is assigned to the same track, and that same track is armed to record. Thanks for watching. 👍🏿

@@PowercoatMusic Thanks. It worked. One other question. I was recording drums and fed each mic to a separate track. Anyway, the levels seemed to be in auto or something. There was a constant level even when I pulled the pods all the way down. Why was it doing that, is there an auto/manual setting?
@PowercoatMusic
@PowercoatMusic Жыл бұрын
@@TRASHtheband There is no auto setting. Adjust the Trim on the unit. Also check the level of each the track on the drum machine. Also, you may want to try swapping audio cables as a last resort. Best of luck with your project.

I am what is described as "Old School" who goes back to reel to reel 4 track and 8 track Teac machines. I have progressed to PC recording with the first Logic 4.7 system for PC and Mac. I loved it but have bought a Tascam DP 32 SD and am just now starting to get my feet wet., my devotion is to the Lord Jesus Christ alone and have written several hundred Praise - Worship - Instruction and Warning Christian songs. All I want to do is begin with the first 8 mono tracks at a good balance and mixdown those 8 for starters., all the rest is superfluous right now. I have been neglectful thus far in my pursuit of conquering this beastbut I know with some help I can accomplish the task at hand. ANYON ANYBODY that has suggestions I am open for considerations. Thanks to all who Love the Lord., I feel the others will not be of help. Thanks again~!
