I live in Bangalore and I use Nitrogen for my car. We spend about 50-100 rupees for 4 tyres (prices vary in filling centres) and honestly that works out to be a lot cheaper for me because most Bangaloreans tip the attendant 5-10 rupees for normal Air filling each time. And I have noticed that since the pressure in tyres with nitrogen remain A LOT more consistent, I have noticed consistently decent fuel efficiency. One of the most prominent advantages for me would be that I don't have to wait in the air filling line once every 2 weeks like I would if I was running normal air. (and these lines have got me waiting for over 10 minutes in some situations) TIME IS MONEY So I'd choose Nitrogen for my daily driver without much fuss.

I had a 6-7 year old apache 160 rtr and had to drive totally 60 km daily for around 2 years to reach my workplace. I filled my tyres fully on nitrogen for few weeks and others I rode on normal air. (Nitrogen costs Rs 10 per tyre or 5 for just top up). Although, doubtful myself in the beginning I found marked difference in how Nitrogen filled tyres soak up bumps. They make a huge difference when you are riding for long distance on uneven roads. Big potholes are generally taken care by your suspension but minor bumps, small potholes etc are definitely less noticeable on nitro tyres. Again the difference might not be perceived by most people on short distances or if they expect even the big potholes to go unnoticed. ... but because, I did this testing for 2 years repeatedly on the same stretch of pothole filled uneven typical Indian roads week after week for such long distances, I can assure they do have an improvement of lets say 15-20% on handling. The rides are much smoother, the bike doesn't bounce sharply on rocks or bumps etc.

Really good video Shumi! While the logic is bulletproof, I appreciate you having mentioned that Nitrogen does have its benefits, all the same. Personally, I prefer to use Nitrogen for the following reasons: 1. Very less quantity of water vapour and Oxygen (the best friends of Oxidation). 2. Tyres feel more stable (and a bit heavier). This may also be a con to some. 3. No need to fill frequently, or worry about faster deflation after a long ride. 4. Quite inexpensive for Motorcycles actually. (25-30₹ for each tyre at any Nitrogen pump in Pune. 10₹ for refilling both tyres.). Considering that Petrol costs well over 100₹ a litre now, 30₹ for a span of 3-4 months doesn't seem that bad.
@kartikPanwar073 жыл бұрын
Agree. Normal city riding conditions don't really warrant Nitrogen use. But say if you have to drive on cemented roads....case in point Yamuna Expressway, I guess Nitrogen is a better option? 2-3 Hrs of High speed driving is bound to cause considerable temperature variations.

@moharghosh24973 жыл бұрын
I would like to disagree on this.. The major advantage is when you go for long ride like 100 to 200 km, tyre filled with air would have eventually 2 to 3 points higher pressure as air expand more due to heat than Nitrogen does. This increase in tyre pressure results in a bumpy ride at the end... But if you ha e nitogen filled in tge tyre pressure doesnt change after a long run... This i am saying from my experience of last 5 to 6 years of using nitrogen...
@bpraghu3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I have tested this and it is true. It is a simple test all can try and then judge themselves. Tyres filled with normal air get bumpy after riding in hot weather, whereas with Nitrogen it stays the same

Inertness of nitrogen also gives an advantage to the tyres as it would not react with other chemical compounds that would've mixed with atmosphere (like industrial chemicals coming out of a chimney) that would've inadvertently entered into the tyres. Again, not a strong point to support nitrogen over air but just adding to the features of nitrogen.

One point Schumi missed is the way Nitrogen reduces running temperatures. Normal air tends to increase tire temp comparatively than Nitrogen, this is reason most people overfill their tires and causes tire blasts in highways (which is an altogether different theory and open to debate) Nitrogen atoms being bigger tend to stay longer inside the tire and being inert gas doesn't absorb mositure from air which is plus for steel rims as it prevents bead seat rusting. So, if you can afford Nitrogen and you tour a lot, or park your vehicle for while without usage, strongly recommend N, if you can't, then stick to normal air and maintain correct pressure.

@sameerajgaonkar233 жыл бұрын
Additionally .. they forgot to tell you .. You already have 1 bar ( atmospheric ) pressure inside the tyre / tube ) when you fill 2.5 bar above atmospheric ... ( 3.5 bar absolute ) You already have 28% air inside the tyre .. You don't vacuum it out before filling nitrogen .. And When commercial compressors compress air, it gets heated ...and , it's first stored in a metal tank .. When the tank gets cold .. The water vapour / moisture turns in to water and settles down at the bottom .. And is redily drained out to prevent rusting of tank from inside .. Additionally ... Oxydation of tyre occuors mostly from outside as it's mainly due to ozone in the air at dawn , and direct Sun rays ...UVA and UVB ..not inside .... And if you take in to account minutely more expansion of plain air than nitrogen gas .. Then .. More expansion ..means fuller tyre ..means bigger radius ( ultra minute taller velocity ratio ) , + lesser rolling resistance.. So in theory . Sould cover more distence in same engine rpm ...... Well that's plain physics ....😝🤪

Benifits I've seen after using Nitrogen for last 10yrs: 1) Literally no sticky moisture inside the car tyres & Butyl tubes of bike tyres. 2) Nitrogen pressure stays stable even after 500kms of city drive. On contrast Air would have dropped 4 to 5psi for the same distance. 3) Regular Air stinks since all the petrol bunks literally never clean or maintain their air filters & moisture traps of their compressors. Its a fit once forget it business since Air is free. 4) Tyres warmup gradually and stay softer during long distance drives. This could be a placebo feeling but either way, the drive is enjoyable at the end of 500kms, don't really mind spending 10bucks for a top-up/car tyre (5bucks for top-up/bike tyre). ✌🏽
