There's a little bit of a feeling that motorcycling, being the largely solitary activity that it is, is a bit selfish. In this Podcast episode, Shumi discusses this rather difficult topic. Should you be spending the family unit’s collective income on a bike? Is that fair? Some answers and some questions in this podcast! Let us know what you think!

Hahaha! However motorcycling can be a truly intimate thing - in the sense, it's only the two of you who are sharing the moment. So maybe not use it as a pick-up line but something to discuss as you get more into the relationship.

The world has been wired in a way to make us believe that our pursuit towards our passion is selfish. It becomes especially more selfish if the person/people we live with do not enjoy that pursuit as much as we do. Having said that, there is a fine line between selfishness that does us good and selfishness that can be damaging to those around us if our approach isn’t mindful enough. Perhaps it ends at that.

Subjectively speaking I don't enjoy riding a bike, statistically speaking it's the kind of activity I try to avoid if I want to keep my chances of living a long life fairly high, road in india are a subject I don't want to start, here in the US it's a completely different thing, I see many doing it safely

I feel so fortunate with regards to this.. My partner was highly interested in learning to ride (her brother too is a rider so the fascination started from home) ...so i taught her the basics on my R15.. then I went on to buy a Ninja 300 while she rode my R15 along with me with proper gear from heel to toe.. We did a lot of duo and group rides together.. finally she upgraded to an R3.. and now we plan on going for tours together on our own bikes. Yes the R15 did fall many a times during her learning days but I always te told her that falling is how you will learn from your mistakes.. Yes, I did get frustrated many a times when she made mistakes but I would tell myself to calm down and that it would be worthwhile in the end.. And I can assure you it sure is. Moreover, now I don't have to worry so much about scraping the underbelly of the N300 because the pillion weight is not there.. so yeah.. kinda selfish of me.. 😂

Motorcycling brings a whole new perspective to travelling, but when you think of a pillion during your road trip many would prefer bus , train or car. It’s more about comfort vs experience. I strongly believe travelling on your bike makes you to join hands with the forces of nature thereby makes you attentive and enjoy the experience along with memory creation. If you have a partner who prioritise experience over comfort then there is no need to worry about being selfish.

To answer Shumi's question, yes motorcycling is selfish. I acknowledge the fact anytime I go for a ride. I know an unfortunate accident is inevitable, risks are just too high. I try to minimize that by using my gears all the time. I try to ride responsibly as much as I can do, and I avoid riding when I feel I'm too emotional for it. I don't appreciate people going into motorcycling without considering the risks. It's your life whatever you wanna do with it, but understand that death is still better than having your spine damaged or losing a limb. People need to understand the risks of riding. Take a calculated decision

The basic question is in India we hardly see people wearing basic helmets and to imagine every rider going to college or office donning a 1L plus riding gear is a bit of a stretch. In theory it's correct but for an average Indian it's just a dream. I have seen offices where they aren't proper toilets let alone a place to change to your regular working clothes.

There's something about motorcyclists, isn't it? When a guy or a gal walks into a restaurant with a helmet under their arm, they invariably have swag and a sense of cool that just isn't the same as rolling up in a car. Whether or not you're looking for the Brad Pitt effect, motorcycles take you one step closer to cool. Unfortunately, Dystopian Society (including Administration) have this perception of "Big Bikes and Cars" come under the "Exotic" category of Beverly Hills...and that's where they think those are expensive high end, selfish commodities to live with

its always should strike the balance of risk vs reward, emotions vs logic, responsibility vs fun and ofcourse money is a big part of this equation too! and i think most motorcyclists have their minds ready to take death with smile head on, it is selfish because we have a family, but a family understands the value of your happiness and respects your decision of riding a motorcycle. i believe most serious motorcyclists will be happy to die in pain of an motorcycle accident instead of the hospital bed at an old age having not ever rode a motorcycle. so yes. its so bad that its good

We as motorcyclists may have accepted death or injury as one of the probable outcomes every single time. However, that may not be the case with the family. They may know it, but it can be super hard for them to accept it. One way to ease them in is to let them know you will try to be as safe on the road as possible - and be safe as well. Wear better riding gear, attend a riding school.

@@powerdriftofficial the best way to ease their tension is to let them know how to help you in case things go south. The anxiety of family not knowing what to do to help you is what causes them trouble. Being as safe as we can and giving them a sence of security by sharing location or updating your route gives them peace of mind. That also included life insurance because it can be the saviour of one's family shall the need may arise. If our family respects our decision of letting us on motorcycles. I reproduce my comment below: Motoccino 3 weeks ago Here's my vote for the next topic - convincing wife and kids that motorcycling is very important and you do need motorcycling time in your life. Also dealing with internal guilt, that by motorcycling and touring, am I robbing my family of time that is rightfully theirs? And with free time so hard to come by! This should be a great discussion.

Very good informational video brother. Kindly do make a video about the craze for bikes - it never ends. Since 2009 I'm using my 19th bike (2021 Himalayan) started from the star City. It doesn't matter for a rich guy to own many bikes. But I lost lakhs of rupees by changing the bikes often. I know nobody gets satisfied with what they have. When new bikes evolve I need to buy them bcoz of the love with machines as an automobile engineer, though I'm not a rich person. The maximum period I used to have a bike is 1 year and the minimum is 1month. Kindly make a separate video on this to share your thoughts. Thank you

I think different. Having gone through the phase of buying this, that and the other cleared my head about what kind of bikes I want to own. I want to ride everything but now I know exactly the kind of motorcycle I’d like to have in my garage

It's true what you said about couples riding together on different bikes. I and my husband do that a lot in last 7 years. But recently i met with an accident. Almost dead. Bedridden for past three months with major injuries. With five surgeries already done. We had a proper gear like you said(alpnister and bell helmet, knee guard all) . But what i didn't expect is this big a accident. The risk was always at the back of my mind , where the fun and aderaline was always first. I read somewhere,"two wheels move soul" that's what happened. So now I want some advices on such accidents and how to cope up as well. Ppl /mostly my family members said , I am selfish and that's why this happened- the accident. Because we delayed having kids and all we did was biking all these years. They say if we had kids, we wouldn't be biking and would have avoided this accident that almost killed me. So m saying, i dont regret biking. I love it. Jus be prepared for anything. Nothing is under your control completely. Even bikes sometimes don't. But that doesn't mean you haven't lived a amazing selfish life 😅 like he said everybody does one day, how you lived matters more. That doesn't mean you have to go rash. Means you go at your own pace, with your own thoughts. Bikes are bliss. Thank you for this video. Glad to know your thoughts. As always powerdrift rocks !!!

Yes Motorcycling is Selfish. A Rs. 2.1 1 Lakhs Bike for a Salaried Middle Class Man is Selfish Enjoying the engagement on my bike at 6500 RPM, 6th Gear, 1 00 kmph is Selfish Spending Rs. 3200 on a Road Trip (Kolkata to Siliguri, done twice) is Selfish. People (my relatives) say I could have taken a AC2 Tier Ticket instead with the same money and reached the destination with so much comfort. But how can I make them understand that I am a Motorcyclist, and Yes I am Selfish ...

Parents relatives....friend's PARENTS society..they are all objecting me for riding and blaming me of IMPOSING motorcyles on others!! Being a selfish activity is just the tip of berg about motorcycles.. The whole toxic idea that one should save money instead of WASTING on fuel is needed to be put in place.

1:43 - i used KTM 390 ADV with lugguage and my wife to ride to Spiti. Completed the whole circuit and back to delhi. Amazing bike, no problem at all. No ground clearance issues. 5:37 - Indian Highways are one of the most dangerous places on earth. Whether you ride a 4 or 2 wheeler. The stats for fatalities are quite high. So there is always a risk when you go out. Not just with motorcycles.

Hey Shumi, I love this video, I agree each and every point you said. While buying Duke 390 2017 my wife asked why such a costly bike you want. But after riding together to various places for almost 3+ years, now we have a small kid, my wife feels very happy about moments we spent together on the bike. And thinks, when can we ride like that once again. Memories are the most valuable things. When we have age on our side we can do certain things, and definitely motorcycling is one of those things which shouldn't be missed in my opinion.

If one is WITHOUT a 2 wheeler Then one is living with depression. IF one is with a 2 wheeler Then one is without depression Depression lowers intellect / work quality / income / social interaction / heart and brain quality. How selfish can one be to NOT want to live with the side effects of depression ? And that's the only question that needs to be answered by the motorcyclist / spouse / family / kids / friends / boss / girlfriend / mother in law ..... Etc

Fabulous discussion. A topic often thought but never spoken. A barrier in translating the inner fire to most special people in life. “Get them to your side of the river”, has been an absolute challenge. I was almost going ahead with my plans of purchase, but after watching this, I shall try my best to convince her to come my side of the river and only then purchase. Thanks Shumi, you’ve cut out my work for the immediate future.

Motorcycling is inherently selfish, and apparently those of us who ride for pleasure and peace of mind are always thinking about our next ride, and I know my family is scared every time I pick the key. But I actually sat with my mom and tried explaining it to her how important it is. I don't know how much she understood or connected to it, but she told me that she won't stop me, even for the 'Big Bike' if I can appord to buy it and maintain, and ride with responsibility, not taking any unwanted risks. And she also made me swear that I ride even more super cautiously when there is a pillion with me, because it's not just my own life but also of someone's son or daughter. Her trying to understand my lifestyle was indeed super sweet and also she bought me another one of the same helmet I use so that my crush has the same level of safety I have, if not comparatively better. So yeah talking helps.

If these things count as selfish then so does living on earth as human. Since we are taking land from animals. Make them work, kill, prison just because our pleasure and fulfillment. Polluting the planet as days pass. Then should we all just not live? This is point less. If you can get things without being inconvenience for others then why not. You have yo convince others and come to mid point to get going.

My wife thinks that i will die in a road accident one day while riding bikes...its been 15 years i am riding and i am pretty much alive ! Also Shumi, motorcycle`s, gym, being in sports have also helped many who go thru depression and anxiety day in and day out, i am one of them. And if someone is making these as a hobby to help them then id say we are better off being called as selfish. You can only keep others happy once u are start being happy :)

Why don't we have anymore entry level 4WD's in India anymore? Cause at the moment the only entry level vehicle (brand new) is the Thar which is upwards of 12L, where are the under 10L 4WD's???

There is also one more factor that we buyed a bike due to fascination or by seeing someone that looks cool..... what now how to learn advance things like leaning a bit and all...to try it at individual level can seriously hurt to life just bcz it intend that we can look week on such high price bike to drive like normal....does it really necessary to roll bike at full pace and it justify the bike.
