The world has been wired in a way to make us believe that our pursuit towards our passion is selfish. It becomes especially more selfish if the person/people we live with do not enjoy that pursuit as much as we do. Having said that, there is a fine line between selfishness that does us good and selfishness that can be damaging to those around us if our approach isn’t mindful enough. Perhaps it ends at that.

I feel so fortunate with regards to this.. My partner was highly interested in learning to ride (her brother too is a rider so the fascination started from home) ...so i taught her the basics on my R15.. then I went on to buy a Ninja 300 while she rode my R15 along with me with proper gear from heel to toe.. We did a lot of duo and group rides together.. finally she upgraded to an R3.. and now we plan on going for tours together on our own bikes. Yes the R15 did fall many a times during her learning days but I always te told her that falling is how you will learn from your mistakes.. Yes, I did get frustrated many a times when she made mistakes but I would tell myself to calm down and that it would be worthwhile in the end.. And I can assure you it sure is. Moreover, now I don't have to worry so much about scraping the underbelly of the N300 because the pillion weight is not there.. so yeah.. kinda selfish of me.. 😂

To answer Shumi's question, yes motorcycling is selfish. I acknowledge the fact anytime I go for a ride. I know an unfortunate accident is inevitable, risks are just too high. I try to minimize that by using my gears all the time. I try to ride responsibly as much as I can do, and I avoid riding when I feel I'm too emotional for it. I don't appreciate people going into motorcycling without considering the risks. It's your life whatever you wanna do with it, but understand that death is still better than having your spine damaged or losing a limb. People need to understand the risks of riding. Take a calculated decision

Shumi! Such a great topic and I appreciate your take on it. As a woman rider, a wife , daughter , mom of 2 and daughter in law, I have fought to ensure that motorcycling is understood to be an intrinsic part of my life( to a very supportive family at that! ) However, underlying tones of it being selfish, inconvenient & tolerated are rife! 😬 “ Why can’t we just all go in the car like a normal family?” Well, “because Mom is selfish and wants to ride her motorcycle though the hills, feel the wind and just basically , enjoy the alone time” . There, I said it - I’m selfish! 😀

Hey Shumi, I love this video, I agree each and every point you said. While buying Duke 390 2017 my wife asked why such a costly bike you want. But after riding together to various places for almost 3+ years, now we have a small kid, my wife feels very happy about moments we spent together on the bike. And thinks, when can we ride like that once again. Memories are the most valuable things. When we have age on our side we can do certain things, and definitely motorcycling is one of those things which shouldn't be missed in my opinion.

Shumi is always measured in his takes, love to see that, I think semantics on the word selfish can be argued as whatever 99% people agree on the meaning is the meaning. Subjectively speaking I don't enjoy riding a bike, statistically speaking it's the kind of activity I try to avoid if I want to keep my chances of living a long life fairly high, road in india are a subject I don't want to start, here in the US it's a completely different thing, I see many doing it safely

Motorcycling brings a whole new perspective to travelling, but when you think of a pillion during your road trip many would prefer bus , train or car. It’s more about comfort vs experience. I strongly believe travelling on your bike makes you to join hands with the forces of nature thereby makes you attentive and enjoy the experience along with memory creation. If you have a partner who prioritise experience over comfort then there is no need to worry about being selfish.

Motorcycling is inherently selfish, and apparently those of us who ride for pleasure and peace of mind are always thinking about our next ride, and I know my family is scared every time I pick the key. But I actually sat with my mom and tried explaining it to her how important it is. I don't know how much she understood or connected to it, but she told me that she won't stop me, even for the 'Big Bike' if I can appord to buy it and maintain, and ride with responsibility, not taking any unwanted risks. And she also made me swear that I ride even more super cautiously when there is a pillion with me, because it's not just my own life but also of someone's son or daughter. Her trying to understand my lifestyle was indeed super sweet and also she bought me another one of the same helmet I use so that my crush has the same level of safety I have, if not comparatively better. So yeah talking helps.

I have a highly stressful 9 to 9 job (who doesn't at this point), and I would rather decompress with a weekend morning riding than drinking alcohol or smoking up (college days, guys?) every evening. If I don't, I would be grumpy the entire week and a much more difficult person to deal with. That's selfless.

Some consider riding to be equivalent to meditating. Do also consider this - there will weekends when your family / partner wants you to spend your time with them. As much as they understand your desire to head out every weekend, you must also understand their desire to be with you doing stuff they love.

I realise that. And on those days, I binge watch @@powerdriftofficial videos in the evening. 😝 JK. I wasn't serious about religiously riding every weekend no matter what your partner is going through. Was just trying to make a light hearted point. There are bad days and worse days, but having an understanding and accomodating partner makes it all a bit easier to bear.
