Powerful THRONE OF ELDRAINE Commander | Chulane Deck Tech

Recently, I've had a need for videos about how to bring a deck from a low budget, to a higher budget in steps. For example, having a video about how to build a Yarok deck on a 50$ budget, then how to improve it to a 100$ budget, then 200$, then 500$, and then maybe 1000$ and no limit. You could do this as a series and do this for any commander. It could help people enter the format and grow into it. It could also help players build themselves a gauntlet of decks, instead of focusing on a single deck, which will help vary the play experience and add longevity to the game.

Mathieu i know this May be 3 months to late but I would start with small things, lower the CMC of your deck and get it from where it is now to about 3-4ish that way you aren’t trying to worry about mana fixing as much. Next get fast mana rock (I.e grim monolith, Moxes, mana crypt, mana vault..) those are basically staples in 90% of all EDH decks and will boost your power significantly. Last thing you should get are the “power staples” so in the case of Yarok, you’re in BUG so sylvan library, gaeas cradle, etc. eventually you’ll get you’re CMC down to about an average of 1-2. Of course you need a win-con and a route and that’s commander specific. I hope this was helpful if you need any more advice I’ve been playing cEDH now for around 3+ years

I have a group of friends that get together at least weekly to play, and I recently got into arena, and now I really wanna be able to play with them, but I can't just spend 1,000$ out of nowhere right now.. I'm very interested in playing Kess, using Jace and Lab man as win conditions. What would you say are the MUST HAVE cards for such a deck to be playable? Making it cheap at first, to slowly upgrade, which is my plan.

@@near193 First I would start out with the tapped lands for the color filtering you need, then slowly swap those out for Have lands, shocks, temples, etc. Your land base is a great first step so it all flows

I’m already building a deck for this guy. Play tested it with my group and I ended up winning with a combo that fell together. Chulane, Teller of Tales, Shrieking Drake, Meloku Clouded Mirror, Zendikar Resurgent and Psychic Corrosin. Part way through the game, all my creatures were wiped out, but I had a decent land base thankfully. I played Zendikar Resurgent. Then on my next turn I played Chulane, Meloku and Psychic Corrosion. Then I could start the combo. I cast Shrieking drake, drew 2 cards, one from chulane and one from Zen Resurgent, so they milled 4. Played an island. Shrieking drake entered the battlefield and then I bounced it back to my hand using its own ability. I tapped the island for two blue thanks to Zen Resurgent. Used one to return the same island I tapped to my hand using Meloku. Spawned a 1/1 blue illusion. Then used the other floating blue to cast shrieking drake again and repeat the process for as many cards as I had in my library. But since they milled 4 for every 2 I drew, they milled out first. However, with my deck I’m focusing on landfall with creature ETB triggers. The draw combo just happened in my deck construction. Just proves there are a lot of combos that can happen with this dude. I can’t wait for him to officially come out!

You could also form a combo with Aetherflux Resevoir and the Lion, Cloudstone Curio, and Intruder Alarm! Just bouncing stuff infinitely and gaining life while recasting stuff and bouncing things.

I've got a druid tribal deck with Tishana at the helm. Going to try using Chulane at the helm for it now instead. It uses the isochron + dramatic reversal combo with the mana dorks to get infinite mana and untaps and steal everyone's lands with gilt-leaf archdruid. It usually relies on a card like stroke of genius to draw into a wincon but Chulane would make that draw engine a lot more reliable.

You've convinced me DJ, I was going back and forth on this commander since I already have yarok as an etb/landfall/goodstuff deck but you got me hyped for chulane. One card you didn't mention was land tax, and I think that card would be great to not only fix your mana,but also put lands into your hand to play off of chulanes ability.

Hi, DJ, I made a decklist from my own deck tech and looking at u list a decide to sugest some cards to improve your list. Treva's Ruins is a powerful addition to bounce lands, as like Khalni Gem is a great rock. I figure your build it's around creatures, but some enchantments are a great backup to infinite creature cast, I use Aura Shards to deal with artifacts/enchantments, Path of Discovery to help avoid draw lands, Earthcraft for infinite mana, Cathar's Crusade/Mirror Entity making big menaces and Bontu's Monument to drain oponentes till death... Finally I thank u for some ideas in your list, like Shaman of Forgotten Ways, Shrieking Drake and Evacuation. Great video!

Portal of Sanctuary (enchantment) from M20 is another card that would be uber powerful in a Chulane deck! I'm surprized no one is using it with Snapcaster or even talking about this card. It's crazy good in Commander!

I swapped my Rune out for this guy and did not regret it at all. Rune is still in the 99 along with brago, blinkdrazi, deadeye and mistmedow. Ive played around 10 games with him so far and OH. MY. GOSH. The deck is so much faster than when Rune was the commander. Dont discount this guy in a blink deck, because he is absolute gas.

So posting this a bit before I’ve finished the video so sorry if you mentioned this already, but if you play omniscience in this deck, you’re ramping enough to be able to eventually cast it, and if you play the 1 drop that makes you bounce one of your creatures you can draw a card and put a land out with your commander...and bounce the 1 drop. And play it again for free. So you can draw your entire deck and play every land out of your deck that way, cyclonic rift and then loop nexus of fate until you win? (By the way the last bounce has to bounce your commander so you don’t draw any more cards once you draw your whole deck, along with maybe bouncing other draw effects? Or you can just play Jace or lab man to win once you draw your whole deck. You just have to be careful). You can play a reliquary tower for no max hand size which you will inevitably get out doing this. Pretty far out there combo but if you can assemble it that’s it, the game is over right away

For your consideration: Mana Breach. 2U, enchantment: "Whenever a player plays a spell, that player returns a land he or she controls to its owner's hand." So with Chulane, I can guarantee having a land in hand by resolving the Mana Breach trigger first. .......Or I could draw my entire deck by casting a Shrieking Drake, returning an island to my hand with the Mana Breach trigger, put that same island back onto the battlefield untapped with Chulane, and bounce the Shrieking Drake back to hand with its own ETB trigger.

KeiruKeiru that actually seems pretty good. Vigilance also makes a stax build seem attractive. Storm Cauldron could provide the same effect. This makes me think it would be easy to storm off if you had a chromatic lantern or a celestial dawn effect, even without a bounce effect.

Rather than Intruder Alarm.... try Village Bell-Ringer. It has flash and untaps all your creatures when it enters. Then you can use Chulane to put that same bellringer back into your hand to loop to draw out your deck (and win using a Laboratory Maniac) This is much safer than trying to do it with Intruder Alarm. Or.... if you want to be "fair" about it, you can just make all your creatures enormous with Valor in Akros or Cathar's Crusade using that combo and swing in for massive damage. Personally I prefer your method of using moonfolk + landfall. I already made a casual 60-card deck using exactly that strategy, and while it's really slow, it's also really fun once you've got your engine going, and probably the direction I'm most excited to see this deck built.

I wonder if it's possible to do a commander tech with Bolas the Ravenger//Arisen, the three bug gods and maybe god pharaoh stuff.... Like a deck focused on that and Gate to the Afterlife and the card attached to it... God-pharaoh's Gift. Tbh I love Bolas and Amonkhet and it really helps with Eternals who are awesome in my opinion. I don't make commander decks for meta gaming I only do it for the theme of the commander and how their army would look like... Like the whole Hour of Devastation if that was stockpiled into a single Commander deck.

My Chulane Is More ETB Effects like with Deadeye Navigator and creatures that counter, and destroy and take things and using helm of the host with Timestream Navigator for infinite turns, and i didn't even see a Tatyova, Benthic druid, or a Tishana, Voice Of Thunder. i don't like the return creature to hand part of this deck, idk it can come in handy with chulane but mainly focused on drawing cards and playing lands and then drawing more cards and dropping more lands getting big dumb stuff out and swinging for the game. Chulane might be my most powerful commander, i consistently win turn 5 and 6

i have a "Roon of the Vannifar hulk" that is a blink/etb deck that i could literally just replace this commander with & it will be better :) Chulane would love to tell the tale of the vannifar into revilark karmic guide combo to getting back the untappers to vannifar into peregrin drake then up the chain to hulk then vannifar hulk away for the deadeye navigator & finishing the vannifar chain with the vorinclex & getting infinite mana & infinite blink on anything in ur deck for ur etb abuse creature of choice, definitely sounds like a tale Chulane wishes to tell :D

Food Chain/Curio/Aluren combos are very solid‚ it's almost like an inverse Prossh. Instead of a two cars combo existing in your Command Zone and depending on a 3rd piece to finish‚ your loop is in the 99 and Chulane is the finisher. Instead of Damage‚ your win is Lab Maniac or Jace. His biggest issue is cost‚ putting him in direct competition with Animar who is dirt cheap and a pain to kill. With that said built in evasion (though slow) mitigates it‚ and access to white means you can run all the relevant hate bearers to cover you (Ouphe‚ Rest in peace‚ Stony Silence‚ Gaddock Teeg ect).

Can somebody explain 13:15 to me? I don't get how that stack works. Even if Fiend Hunter gets bounced, doesn't the other creature still come back? How does it remain exiled???

Wizards has since fixed the wording on current cards, but cards like Fiend Hunter still work under the old text. It works like this: Fiend Hunter comes into play, you choose target when its come into play ability hits the stack. While that ability is on the stack, you sac it or however you are removing it from play. The come into play ability still has not resolved, but since it leaves play, that ability goes on the stack as well. When stack resolves, the removed from play effect resolves first since stack resolves in reverse order, then lastly, the come into play effect resolves, removing the targeted creature from the game permanently (since the ability that would bring it back into play has already resolved at this time). It's a weird wording trick that new cards don't have anymore. I think Oblivion Ring was the first card to abuse this.

@@MJFSIXTEEN So what? It's not worth it if it won't trigger except for the first four or five turns of the game. Most of the time when you draw it, it will be a dead card. You don't play Land Tax in decks with green, because most of the time the decks with green have more mana ramp. It's even worse in this deck because your commander is going to be putting out so many lands because of how many cards you will draw, and it puts lands into play!

Mo Fries It’s a 3 color deck with a 5 cmc commander. You’re gonna wanna ramp early game, by the time you get him out you’ll probably have more lands than your opponents. If you dont then you might get one Land Tax trigger, get three lands then play them all off creatures casts now putting you ahead of everyone on lands not allowing for another Land Tax trigger. You only want Land Tax in decks that arent great at ramping and you want it early game.

100% agree. The value engines they have been printing on legendary creatures lately, specifically card draw engines, are getting out of hand. Seems like they are sort of “evening out” the playing field in terms of strengths and weaknesses of the color pie. The only color really lagging behind is red. I mean, DJ says it in this video- this commander has card draw, ramp, and self protection built in, where traditionally you would need to assemble some protection pieces. This commander will be difficult to play against because a main strategy to deal with a strong commander is to kill it enough times to make the casting cost untenable. It doesn’t really need a way to protect itself. The fact that it combos so well with very cheap creatures makes it miserable to deal with.

@@MrJkwatson23 Well I think most of the card value legendary creatures have been either Simic, mono blue, or mono green, so green and blue. Red and white both need help and could use an effect like this. Blue and green don't need another legendary with this kind of effect, and especially to this extreme, because green and blue can exploit it the most I think. Yeah you pretty much have to kill this commander as soon as it comes out, otherwise you are pretty much wasting removal on it. Although actually after thinking about it, the bounce effect on your commander won't be that impactful the first time you cast it from the command zone since if you were to bounce it, you'd be spending more mana to protect and re-cast it from your hand than if it were to die and you re-cast it for the second time from the command zone. Is it really worth it to hold up three mana in a creature based deck to protect it the first time you cast it? Either way, I think It's still too good of a value engine. Not broken like Urza, but still very powerful!

I'm pretty sure that I said MOST. Vilas costs 8 mana. As a commander he costs too much for a mono color deck without green. Red and white are getting better cards finally as of late, but they still aren't that good. Feather I think is easily the new best Boros commander, but that's not saying much. Yeah green has gotten a ton of card draw in the last five years or so! Simic is definitelly the strongest two color pairing in EDH by far, especially in casual commander! Lots of mana ramp and card draw!

Cu Chulainn is more like "coo hoo lan" or "coo hull an", so your comparison would give us "hoo lane". I agree it looks like it is based on that name, but I think maybe that's as far as it goes.
