I run a very similar deck than what you've described here and winding constrictor is really good, if it hits the battlefield early, with a spore frog and meren on the BF you can start pouring out big beaters pretty early. I've had some great games with Meren already :P

I'm sure there are better big scary Eldrazi, but the one Eldrazi I run in my deck is It That Betrays. I run a mid range, pillow fort, draining type of Meren deck. I don't attack directly in general. But It That Betrays? Ah, man. After I've been making you get rid of your board all game, I drop that steamer on the table and start taking people's stuff for my own? Nice Sensei's Diving Top... I'll take that. Love it. But some of your suggestions might go into my side board like Triskalion.

I had a problem with my Meren deck in my playgroup a while back. Being my first true commander that I built myself, it ended up being kind of linear and winning lots of games by Grave Pact + Sac outlets to wipe the field or Living Death, and only really those two ways. This video was a great inspiration because you went over so many cool cards and interactions I haven't really thought of for Meren. Excellent video as always, Jumbo! I love to play Grave Betrayal in this deck. Especially when you force your opponents to sac their stuff. So any annihilator dude is best friends with it. Speaking of betrayal, "It that betrays" is one of my favorite stomper in my Meren Deck.

Nice! If you want something like Fallen Ideal there is its namesake creature -- Fallen Angel. Same effect but because it's on a creature you can get it back with Meren if the angel happens to die. BTW make sure to get the classic art from Legends!

I get good use of adding Skull briar the walking grave, I didnt thimk it would do much. but if you get it open hand and keep atacking the counters dont leave off of it in the grave yard. so i would just atack . sack and then bring him back in one turn.

I have see the GY hate too. I think the new desert, Scavenger Grounds, is really solid graveyard hate that should make it in a lot of decks which makes my Meren sad. We just have to be more disciplined in building. Good Luck

You could totally run Spikefeeder + Razaketh, the Foul Blooded and tutor every creature outta your deck. Remove the counters from Feeder to gain 2 life then sacrifice it in response to its death and you just created a free sac outlet to tutor any creature. Recur Feeder and repeat the process

I have a meren deck. And after watching this vid I realize that I have all the pieces... I guess I’m just not focusing on 1 or 2 and am using too many different options. My deck isn’t working well. Reason being I find that even with mana dorks or ramp cards to do with sac. My deck only really gets going turn 3/4 or usually 5. At that stage everyone else has a full on board state and whenever I try casting commander she just dies. I have also found that a lot of lands end up in your grave, so if, unlike me, you are lucky enough to own a crucible of worlds, u could over come this. I know that sounded a bit like a rant but I meant it to help someone. Hope it has :)

I play a Meren deck too! I've been sculpting this deck for nearly a year now and instead of running a boring Craterhoof Behemoth I run Decimator of the Provinces. Yea, it's not as good up front but it plays better with Meren and is a bit more flexible. My pet card in my Meren deck has got to be Mitotic Slime. Mitotic Slime + Ashnod's Alter = 14 mana!!

Not yet. When we play we don't know who's bringing what. Until we all sat down on the table and start shuffling. Not only that, its what you get on the first draw 7. Then mulligan and each draw during upkeeps. Craterhoof Behemoth is my game ender for 4X. But here's the downside. My life was 10 and below when crazy things happen and throw the kitchen sink to my opponents. The Eldrazi spawns and scions tokens was smart on your side. Not only did it add mana, it adds experience when its sacrificed.

One of my opponents plays angels deck. Has not lost in his Friday nights store games for many weeks. Angels lost to Meren for 3 consecutive days. Meren commander got destroyed many times and many times I have to pay 2, 4 and 6 additional manas to bring here out. So far has not been enchanted. No sol ring and other artifacts. I used 50 lands.

I filmed a few and ... they sucked. I'll have to wait for work/life to quiet down to try again. But I'm not going to just a run a camera at a game of commander and upload it. I think the Command Zone: Game Knights (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZewgpells6ooKc) is phenomenal and it has raised the bar for creating gameplay content. I don't have the skills yet copy the quality of their product but I need to find my own creative way to present gameplay. Great question!

Bing Chua if you happen to see this, I’m playing a variation of the Izoni, Thousand-Eyed deck that DJ posted since your post. She makes a decent amount of GB insects that can be sacrificed to empty people’s hands. Dictate if Erebos can.m be pretty oppressive that way. It was my second time playing the deck and I tutored for it...and then made everybody sad. Just be ready for the blowback when you make people discard their hands. I tried to spread it around a bit since I still wanted the others to have fun too.

I don't like the bracers tbh. To me if Meren is on the battlefield and working then I think you are winning the game. Triggering twice is really nice but I'd rather have something that protects her or makes it easier for her to operate. In my mind you need an amazing effect to make the bracers worth it for example I would rather have an animate dead in my deck that will only get a creature back once than the bracers which could get more value but are reliant on my commander to do anything. I have played them in Borborigmos Enraged and found them clunky (both in my hand early and after having to equip them) but also really amazing. I cut them a while back and don't miss them. What do you think?

Actually, I was trying to think of ways to become less dependant on Meren, when I found this card. And now I'm doing the opposite. My thoughts were that I'd get more value from them, because I can put em on supporting creatures like nyx weaver to faster fill my yard or catacomb sifter for extra scry. Then when the time is right, I can transfer them to Meren. Clearly, whatever you put it on becomes the target of hate. (However, the big down side is orical says that a creature that sacs itself won't get the extra trigger and that is a big chunk of the creatures, so the stats might not add up in my favour.) Alternatively, I thought Panharmonicon, but my triggers come when I return cards from the gy to the bf which seems more important...but I'm not sure. I need another creature that does what meren does...is there one?

The Bracers don't do anything for Meren. They only copy ACTIVATED abilities. Meren's abilities are both triggered abilities. I use them in my Borborygmos Enraged and Teysa, Orzhoz Scion decks.

I ordered it for my Atraxa deck, but it got me thinking about my meren deck. I don't think it fits. For 5 mana I can drop a pseudo land manarock and play a creature to impact the game. Fertilid would work best if I keep mana open on my opponant's turn, which I don't do with my meren deck. late ramp is not ideal and you need 5 mana to pull this off properly...at that stage of the game there are other things to do with 5 mana. I'll try it, but best case would be cast it for 3, kill it for 2, bring it back with meren to block...on the end step of the opponant kill it for 2. That's 7 mana for 4 lands on probably turn seven, because I loose a ramp slot for fertilid...too little too late.

SPORE FROG!!!!!! all the way Question: how does this deck deal with Humility? I'm not using Mikaeus. I hate combo. I love synergy. I'm going with drain + other...probably tokens. I'm so sad death cultist only lets you sacrifice himself; he would be so awesome. Viscera Seer is critical because you can sacrifice other creatures. If humility is in your metagame you need to run an answer. Krosan Grip is a good one. I also like Vraska, Karn, Spine of Ish Sah. Thanks! Which artifact Angel? Platinum Angel? I would suggest making sure that you have alternate value engines that work with Meren especially if she keeps getting removed. Spore frog is AWESOME but without Meren you are playing a fog .... not ideal. I suggest cards like Birthing Pod which lets you trade in your ETB triggers. It's amazing with Meren but still solid value on its own.

Jumbo Commander thank you for the reply, I'm modifying my deck this weekend, I'll post my final results , would love your opinion and/or suggestions. I grabbed a lot of the cards you talk about now it's just fitting everything in the deck properly with synergy and good Mana curve.

Vizier of the Menagerie does a lot of work in creature based decks Bontu isn't ideal but he is a sac outlet. Hour of Promise is good on its own but GREAT if you are running quality utility lands Ramunap Excavator is strong if you have some self mill in your deck Liliana Death's Majesty is some mill and reanimation but not the strongest of either ability Manglehorn is good but narrow, I'd rather have a caustic caterpillar Razaketh, the Foulblooded is VERY POWERFUL and awesome but I feel like you need some more reanimation in your deck to cheat him into play. These are my Ahmonkhet block picks for Meren .. but TBH I have not included any of these in my personal build. I would lean heavily toward including these cards if you have them or can trade for them. Otherwise buy cards that are out of standard that might be cheaper.

necrotic ooze will not die if get´s bigger than 7 if phyrexian devourer and triskelionare in the graveyard. Or i think so. You see, Necrotic Ooze say´s "As long as Necrotic Ooze is on the battlefield, it has all activated abilities of all creature cards in all graveyards." ACTIVATED ABILITIES. Phyrexian Devourer say´s inthe other hand "When Phyrexian Devourer's power is 7 or greater, sacrifice it." THAT´S A TRIGGERED ABILITY. Necrotic Ooze can´t copy that ability so he will not die.

There is actually a lot of controversy about this combo because of the changes in oracle text versus the updated version in Masters II. If you care they linked the activated ability to the sacrifice ability in that set (click on Oracle and Printed to see the difference gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?printed=false&multiverseid=184563). You can read a lot of people in the comments talking about it BUT it doesn't matter because you can always hold priority and add counters in response to any sacrifice triggers removing what you need to before your combo dies. The combo works!

Finally I lost with Meren lasted only 15 mins. I got was a sorcery to search for a land. After shuffling my library, the next 10 turns turn out to be lands...................... A total of 12 turns. LOL.. A crazy thing to loose this way.

i dont think the necrotic ooze thing works like that... because it gets +x/+x counters NOT x +1/+1 counters. You can still only remove +1/+1 counters for triskelion. what a complicated fuckfest.

It's super confusing because the oracle is very different than the card: When Phyrexian Devourer's power is 7 or greater, sacrifice it. Exile the top card of your library: Put X +1/+1 counters on Phyrexian Devourer, where X is the exiled card's converted mana cost.

This is a cuestion from a judge, but if I am not wrong, the oracle or gatheter version is the most correct, because if that card will be reprinted it will have the new text. long ago I see a spanish video of MTG "20 ways of win the game in turn one" and i disscuse this same theme of Necrotic Ooze combo.

Oh yes. I have like, 4 Eldrazi cards in my Meren deck. Smothering Abomination (in german), From Beyond, It that Betrays, and Artisan Of Kozilek.

Infect...I like skittles and me blightsteel... also, necropotence, grafted exoskeleton, newlamog, phyrexian hydra/swormlord and maybe an eldrazi conscription. Also razaketh is nice too.

I like your stuff but this was a miss for me. Haven't met an EDH player who doesn't either have or refuse to have a Meren deck. More interested in under-featured decks and new commanders, and with all the new partners, I am hoping you get around to some original builds soon
