That is exactly the reason to fit an external tire pressure monitor (TPMS), that would warn you about loosing air, or sudden tire separation from the rim (usually due to very low pressure). I bought the CACAGOO system from Amazon ( yeah, that's the real name...and it's made in China) and saved my life and tires a couple of times. It's cheap insurance. As for not having a jack, as much as I feel sorry for you, "you should have known better"........comes to my mind. Thank God for the emergency manual key lock. Never a boring day in a Land Rover owner's life. Great content though, I really enjoyed watching you guys! :) Hello from Canada, congrats on your 100,000 KZbin subs.
@johnwillett40862 жыл бұрын
+1 for the TPM - I have had mine for several years. But the problem is that the external caps can become welded on and cannot be removed (this has happened a couple of times to me, even if put on with copper grease) - so I'm now swapping them out for a set that fits internally to the wheel - will just have to remember to install new batteries on every new tyre change.
@rrshse67042 жыл бұрын
@@johnwillett4086 Not an issue for me here in Canada. Have them in both of my cars and perform well even in -40C ! Swapped one set out to my snow tires and came off easily using the little wrench included in the kit.

Well deserved guys. On the Jack front, a few years ago I bought an electric jack. It’s really a scissor jack with a motor you plug into the cigarette lighter socket. Never had to use it after buying it. It’s presence is enough to ward off punctures.

Don't forget, it's only one dugga dugga when you tighten the wheels Simon. The joys a laneing, you ought to have a high lift jack, it's essential for getting out of ruts if you ever bottom out. When I soldered the battery on it seems that movement in the battery in use seems to break the contact. I'm now going to try some silicone to steady the battery and see if that woks. Good luck in fixing yours.

Congratulations on the 100k Simon - well deserved. And isn't it lovely to have children to do all the dirty bits for you? 😉 I am guessing that the "non opening" bit was due to a low battery in the key??? I change my key batteries at every annual service to make sure this doesn't happen (it happened to me a few years ago, so I always stay safe now). Though a big mistake not having a jack (naughty step for you). I have an extendable wrench for the wheel nut removal as it gives a bit of extra torque - though now I also carry a torque wrench as well.

Hi Simon, I did enjoy watching this video ! 👍 I like greenlaning very much, but it is mostly prohibited here in the Netherlands. Farmers become angry when 4x4 drivers use such roads, especially when it is so wet. But driving in muddy conditions is very much fun 😀 You could use a pair of wellington boots next time 😉 What tire-pressure did you use ?
@L6632 жыл бұрын
Hi Johnny - these lanes are part of the public highway in the UK so open to all traffic. We have to be careful not to damage the lanes but some driving in the wet is good to learn control of your vehicle etc. We have the tyres at around 32 PSI - we re-inflated the tyre today and it was a cut in the side wall that caused the puncture... would higher or lower tyre pressures help this ... lower i guess would be better ?
@johnny_w2 жыл бұрын
Hi Simon, I would have used 20-25 psi for such roads. The story of the high pressured balloon that is easier punctured compared to a low pressured balloon. When lowering too much, the sidewalls become more exposed, it is a trade-off. With lower pressure you also have more traction, so you can lower the speed of the car, which reduces the chances of damage 😉 What tire size do you have ? I would use minimal 75-series tires on a 4x4 which is used off-road. The higher sidewall is more flexible, and can deliver a bigger footprint (=more traction) when aired down. I own 2 Pajeros , both mounted with BFG AT tires, never had punctures, we have mostly sand and mud, less sharp rocks. For driving muddy roads, I have 4 extra rims with BFG Mud terrains. That makes driving in wet conditions much safer and pleasant. You can lower your speed, without being stuck. It is a huge difference ! See this forum for pictures of a punctured BFG AT, did your tire have a big hole ? www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php/75292-BFG-AT-sidewall?s=1c66cdd9405ea8b463012048abc82c8d
