Hey Christian, I've actually a several of the Belsaw designed planers. I know I'm just throwing this out there seemingly randomly, but I've learned this lesson the embarrassing way - first hand. If yours is one of the older models (Pre-RBI), it probably has a long handle sticking out the front of the machine with a little hook that hangs down for that lever to be lifted up and set into. It looks like this is what latches the cover closed. It's not though! It's actually a safety disengage lever. When it's lifted up and hooked on that little hanging hook/tab thing it actually slackens the feeding mechanism. If you're like me, it just seems obvious that this is a cover hold-down... I had to figure this out the hard way, after running a timing chain off the sprocket and digging through the old manual reading up on it. Don't ever let anyone tell you your Belsaw is anythign but top-notch though! Those planers are AWESOME...they're versatile, extremely heavy duty, and there's a reason why they've been in production since the 50's or 60's at least, having been traded from one company to another multiple times.....and the parts Woodmaster produces now still often fit the old Belsaws. Alwasy made in America. Always phenomenal quality. Good luck!
