As long as you don't buy all of the plug and play stuff that's constantly pitched as stealth advertising on these shows. If you were willing to spend a few bucks years ago, though, you could have a 450 horsepower lumpy chevy 350 for not that much money. I think the transmissions have made just as much of a stride as the motors - aside from the fact that you can get cheap motors now that will take a fair amount of boost. Hard to come up with one that's in a reliable car that lasts, though. Audi 1.8T, 375 horsepower when you want it turned up? No problem. having the rest of the car last as long as the turned up motor? no way. What about the little ecoboosts...time will tell. The cars get junkier and heavier around the motors every day. what would a 450 horsepower 350 run these days in a 2800 pound drag car with good tires and a good trans?12s? 11s?

For the time this was filmed (2003-2006), that's not half bad. The LS3 wasn't out yet. The LS7 may not have even been out yet. So, really, if you're a car parts company, your target audience is the slightly older car, hence the 90's trucks that are super common. They set the build goals as "No internal modification" which really means "No trips to a machine shop". So they ended up re-using the stock pistons, unfortunately. A good modern re-do of this would be to re-build it as a 496. 10.2:1 compression. Heads like AFR 265's, then a port-matched intake manifold. The cam would be a point of fumbling. See, they could do a smooth idling cam and a TBI unit, but then they'd only make stock LS power with a big block. A k11-451-8 might do well with a slightly bigger rocker ratio. There's some cool 4-pattern cams like the 11-615-44, but that particular cam has too much lift.

I think they said they are running it at 5 psi. In any event, they did not upgrade the fuel pump prior to the dyno runs and we were not made privy to the final numbers after they upgraded the pump. I've seen 351W's make over 400 HP with a simple heads, cam, and intake swap and no power adder. While they did not change those parts on this, one can assume that it would make more than it did because even a stock 302 H.O. with a SC or turbo can make over 400 flywheel with no head, or intake changes. I knew a guy who had a 5.0 LX with an E303 cam and a Vortech SC and that's the kind of numbers he was getting. One would surmise that a 351W is capable of making the same or greater.

It had a N.O.S plate pilled for a 100 shot and ran like 7.00's in the 1/8 on motor and 6.70s on the bottle in 2003 and that's like 560hp at the flywheel by using a hp calculator

I'm surprised(yes, I know this episode is over 10 years old) that they didn't go the Mustang route on the Lightning and go with a stroker kit on the 351W to at least 408 or better yet a 427, then slap a Vortech supercharger on it, would've easily made 500 to the rear wheels. All the technology to do that existed back then.....
@michaelbradley7705 жыл бұрын
That is a completely different block the 351m is a 408 the 351w is a 302
@05gtdriver5 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbradley770 I think you haven't kept up on stroker kits for the Windsor line of V8s..... the 351W can be stroked out to 393, 408 and 427, with a 454 doable with an aftermarket block. The 351M also had a variant in the 400M version(both dubbed 335 series V8), both roughly using the 351C and 429 (385 series V8) architecture.

My stock Lincoln Aviator is right around 300hp, still a pos, and it sucks fuel.
@yahmutha5 жыл бұрын
First off, your Aviator is rated at 300 at the crank so itll make like 250-ish hp to the tire (assuming its RWD. AWD will make even less.) Also, the Aviator is a mid-sized luxury SUV so it should weigh slightly more than either of these trucks. Another thing is, the Lightning has 4.10s and a higher stall converter. If you put in 4.10s and a 3000 stall in that Aviator it would he a totally different animal. Its not always about how much power you make, its how you turn that power to the ground.
@yahmutha5 жыл бұрын
But i do agree 300 whp is weak sauce and not FAST, its more-so quick than anything.
@lowpricedpaint5 жыл бұрын
@@yahmutha I'm aware of all of this, believe me. Plus this motor has flaws. Like the dead head, drivers side cooling comes to a dead end, and doesn't circulate well. This eventually kills the valve guides in cyl 7 and 8, causing them to stick. When you take it to the shop, they want $6500 to fix it.
@yahmutha5 жыл бұрын
@@lowpricedpaint Another flaw you should have in that engine if its anything but a 2005 Model Year is the spark plug thread count will not be adequate allowing plugs to sometimes shoot out of the head. Im a Marauder guy and that engine in your Aviator is the exact same as in a Marauder with the exception of the intake manifold. Shouldnt be THAT expensive to replace though. You can get refurbushed longblocks from Spartan Engines with a 3 year unlimited mile warranty for $3300-ish.
