I built a couple of 460's in the mid-70's. I had a tough time finding speed parts for them at the time. They are really great engines and simple. So much more is available for them now....it's amazing. Wish I would have had access to some of today's stuff for them.

@@Tsalinger Agreed. Depends on how much power you want to push thru them.....even at that some guys are making good horsepower. There is always the CJ and SCJ blocks in both the 385 series and the FE's. I was building for towing and warmed-up street use. Wonder how far these birds will end up pushing this thing. I'm 73 and a lot of my building days are coming to an end. Dollar for dollar it is hard to pass up the BBC's for strength and power.. Only weakness that shows itself is the heavy valve train if you are really going to wind 'em up....but there are cures for that problem. I fell into a deal 40+ years ago and got a couple of 427 side-oiler Fords on the cheap. Talk about a stout bottom end, forged and cross-bolted. Had a lot of fun with them. Thanks for the comeback.....what are you building? Working on a little 302 Ford now. Have built SBC's and you cannot go wrong there. Had a 440 Mopar in my RoadRunner back in the day....a real thrill. The drivetrain doesn't know what the name on the engine is.....it just knows horsepower! Lemme know what your up to chief! Again, nice to hear from you. Keep the Faith

They drug it up and down the road in front of their place and actually managed to get it started. I guess it ran for about 10 minutes which I thought was pretty damn impressive. considering. I guess they used a crow bar to force the one rod over. Not sure if it windowed the block or not, I wouldn't imagine it was much good even if it didn't. Pat saying "If it's tight something not right" made me think of these guys who obviously didn't live by that motto of engine assembly.

A Ford 460 is not "maxed out" at 557 cid. Many articles have been published of 460s turning into 598s or 602s. And that's with the standard 4.90" bore spacing. In fact, pro stock drivers with Chevys or MoPars often used to complain that Fords had an unfair advantage because they were at 4.90 vs 4.84 or 4.80 that others were "stuck" with. Which is why now everybody is equalized at a 5.0" bore spacing.

The 426 Hemi BB adds to the raised block with cross bolt mains. Again for more support on the rotating assembly. I have no doubt that is how the Hemi became a racing legend. Bone stock Chrysler big block Hemi's straight from the junkyard ran on Nitro fuel at the race track. Granted, I often referred to it as a 580 stroker because that’s the stroker kit I put in there, but not including the BDS Blower I stacked on top I was pushing a naturally-aspirated 600 CID exactly. People laugh when I say I had a Chevy 406 2 bolt mains block holding 620 NA Horse reliability, raced on the weekends and driven on the streets, it held up without any issues to an impressive 150HP shot of nitrous as well on both streets and track! With the time taken and care to details and the important things like deburring the blocks it is entirely possible to have a reliable 1000HP stock block engine! I finally had a lean condition cause a top ring seizure when I tried pushing it to a 250 shot of nitrous which unfortunately after a long life was the demise of baby! The top ring was a hair too tight on clearance from thermo expansion which caused a chunk of the piston land to crack off and be pushed through my very expensive Cantfeild head! Bent a rod and cracked the bore. Unfortunately the crack was too long protruding just to the webbing of the block and sadly couldn't safely be saved, unless it was run on strictly methanol and water jackets were hard blocked to seal them from any oil leakage into the water jackets....... But the fact of my story is if that ring never seized and broke the TRW forged piston, it probably still be racing today! I had H beam rods on a cast STOCK 400 crank 010 under a stock 2 bolt block and sadly the parts to give out on me because of something self inflicted were the "Performance" part due to adding much more power than they were ever designed to handle! BUT like I said, I have the last laugh, it pulled a very low 10 second pass 2 times prior to that piston saying goodbye on me on its way into the high 9s before I got it fully tuned in! But the fact of the matter is, please don't ever put a stock chunk of cast iron down even if it's only a mere 2 bolt mains! Of anything back then I ever expected to break like that stock cast crank or mains caps! It was pulling over 800hp but a little lean condition put it in an early grave. Otherwise great Build guy's! Nice to see people having some faith with some old Iron! Thanks!

This probably is an odd question... but, are there cylinder liner kits to reduce the bore of a 460 back to the 4.05" of the 370? Then, adding a 4.50" stroker kit, you'd end up with an engine of ~464 in^3, with undersquare dimensions? I ask because my 460 is in a 1996 F-250 pickup and I'm looking for improved low-end grunt, and with the right cam, a friction-reducing valvetrain, some polishing/porting, an MSD ignition, and good tuning should give a nice flat torque curve peaking at ca. 500 ft/# at 1500-2000 rpm, and top out around 330hp at 4800 or so.

You got SVO/Ford Racing money? This was to show a average person on a beer budget what is possible when you use mostly rebuild parts but some nice heads/cam/intake. Back when nothing was available but some camshafts getting to 500+HP was fairly difficult. With modern cylinder heads and solid lifer roller cams, 9000 rpm and 1000+ HP NA isn't a problem.

I can't imagine why people feel the need to offset the rear main seal. I have never taken an engine apart that was that way, nor have I put one together that way , and had it leak. The only thing I can think is helping a block with sever main cap walk, or a block that will twist at a huge power level, and either way silicone should flex enough to keep the seal bonded. Try offsetting a rope rear main seal with success! lol

@PowerNationTV, what color is the block painted? That’s sharp!

Episode Of ford engine and Chevy car, commercial for Toyota coils. I'm putting this one down as a miss for the sales department. My mouth was watering for the stroker kit and heads commercial.

3:23 auto transmission oil is not a good cleaner, will leave oil that will attract dust, use brake cleaner or other metal cleaners or even gas lol.... and only use lube for storage, 3:36 3:58 bearing looks damaged and scratched,
@sparkplug10184 жыл бұрын
Im betting that bearing was used because its all they had to film this with, production schedules are a bitch. And got swapped out after they filmed this. Theres been other ones where the said they were installing Comp lifters when it clearly said Lunati on the side. Same thing, tight production schedule and no time to wait on replacements.
@DeVoNmotorsports4 жыл бұрын
@@sparkplug1018 way too much assembly lube, can cause glazing. bigger cyl bores = weaker block = less max power, cylinder walls get hotter faster and cool faster, and warp,
@sparkplug10184 жыл бұрын
@@DeVoNmotorsports All correct, though thats not what the initial comment was about. Like I said, they likely used what they had on hand to get an episode out the door. Or heck, who cares if it throws a rod or spins a bearing a thousand miles in, as long as it ran long enough to film the episodes. Either explanation is possible. Not like they sell these projects off when they're done filming.

@@sparkplug1018 that's not cool
@sparkplug10184 жыл бұрын
@@DeVoNmotorsports No, its not. But its also the reality of shows like these. If this engine is run past 1000 miles it will be amazing. Build it, do a few videos with it and scrap most of it. Odds are what ever car this may have ended up in is beer cans by now, and the engine was broken down and stuck on a shelf for some other videos down the road. So would you or I assemble an engine this way? No. Does it matter that they did? Also no, since it will make a few dyno pulls and go back on the parts shelf.
