World Champion Carlsen started the ________ tournament (in the year ________) with a weak performance. Things weren't quite clicking for him, didn't get the positions he wanted. But he always gives everything, and finishing strong he ended up winning the tournament.

Thank you so much for doing these videos. I love watching classical chess but do not have time to sit and watch the stream so it is always great to see the match of the day explained so even a novice like myself can understand it.

I am very impressed by Carlsen. Even with the record on line, and in a pressed position he goes for the sharp move that can cost him the match or give him a possibility of winning the match. Would be really interesting if Van Foreest had the guts to sacrifice after Carlsens bishop a3. No doubt that Van Foreest would be in a great position then, but Carlsen would definitely also have counterplay. 111 games unbeaten.. Incredible.

I think, technically speaking, this isn't quite the fried liver attack. Unless I'm mistaken that term is reserved for the variation with 5..Nxd5? 6.Nxf7. An interesting variation, but (even though I love to eat fried liver!) I think this is survivable for black, unlike 6.d4! often followed by Nxf7.

This proves why the Knight's attack is a good move in this line (tho very tough both to face and play). And also this proves that the Giuoco Piano is so much more superior from the 2 Knights in this variation. Bc5 would have guaranteed Magnus the Win here.

Magnus took the world record of longest unbeaten streak in classical chess at elite level (111 games). The average Elo-rating for Carlsen 's opponents is incredibly 2737 (during the 111 games) . Some background info also. Sergei Tiviakov and Bogdan Lalic both claim to have played 110 games without a loss. And just to get some perspective, the average Elo-rating of Tiviakov 's opponents is 2442 (during the 110 games). But, as mentioned before, they both are now surpassed by Magnus. It is a very impressive feat by Magnus!

8:27 "hoping that with the 2 bishops he could find compensation for his pawn" Thing is that it's not just a pawn that Magnus is missing. Carlsen's position also suffers because of the knight on a5 and the terrible pawn structure. I really don't believe there is any good into the 2 knights defence after White goes for Ng5 - the Knight's attack. I mean, Magnus could have won against this guy easily by playing any other opening... I think that Bd7 should be studied in this position instead of c6 Like this 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6 4. Ng5 d5 5. exd5 Na5 6. Bb5+ Bd7 7. Qe2 Be7 8. Nf3 Nxd5 9. Nxe5 c6 10. Bd3 Nf4 11. Qf3 Nxd3+ 12. Qxd3 Be6 13. Qxd8+ Rxd8 14. d3 Bf6 15. f4 c5 But I'm not sure where that can get you... At the end the 2 Knights are not good exactly because of Ng5.

@@spindriftdrinker Everyone knows the fried liver, no one knows what Ng5 is called if it even has a name. Just call it the fried liver attack its better that way. And if people played the blackmar diemer gambit 90+% of the time after d4 then yeah you might as well just call it the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit from move one your point is stupid.

I often get the position after whites Be2 and have played this line for a couple of years and have had good success with it. That said if white fumbles on the kside it can be over quickly in blacks favor.
