Love it when Danny analyzes these games with non-obvious, and subtle brilliancies. No one else on youtube even thinks to go into these games. To me, it shows how this channel is a level above everyone else. Bravo, really enjoyed this one.

I'm not entirely sure you've seen many Carlsen games in the past year or so. He's sharpened up his entire style, evidenced by the fact that he's playing a system as dynamic as the Shveshnikov.

15:49 For anyone wondering, after h5 black cannot simply move the bishop off the back rank (e.g. Be7) because Rg8# would follow.

Thanks as always GM King for your fine analysis, and of course for your live coverage of IOM. There were two points in the game where I'm trying to understand Carlsen's choices: 1. Why not 16...Qd6 instead of 16...Qd8, and 2. why not 39...Be7 instead of 39...Ba3 ? It looks to me like these moves would accomplish the same purposes as in the game, and save Black time.
@HolyAvatar88
@HolyAvatar88 4 жыл бұрын
16...Qd6 probably leads to bad variations with the white rook invading with tempo on C6. As for 39... Be7 it doesn’t look good since after 40.Rd7 the bishop has to move and Ne5 is coming attacking f7 and cutting off the rook from the defense of the king (40.Re8 also looks dangerous since now the h6 pawn is still en prise and you need the bishop to block access to G8 -mate threats with Nf6 and Rg8 - resulting in going back to square one with a tempo loss). Not sure if those are the right reasons, I didn’t check with an engine. Edit: the simple variation 39... Be7 40. gxh6+ Kh7 (only move) 41. Rd7 skewering bishop and pawn looks dreadful.
@tome57a
@tome57a 4 жыл бұрын
@@HolyAvatar88 I don't see a concrete variation bad for Black after 16...Qd6. But I do take your point about 39...Be7. Thanks.

Hmm so the point of Ba3 (vs Be7 immediately) was maybe just to avoid1. gxh6+ Kh7 2. Rd7

Power play - when carlsen blocked his own pawn from advancing with his bishop he was thinking like alpha zero. what do i mean by this? when alpha zero plays chess it is like two gm's playing and looking at every move possible, even moves that seem absolutely stupid to you or i

Thank you. Excellent commentary on an excellent game. At 19:05, why is 39...Ba3 is so good? You explain why it needs to stay on the a3-f8 diagonal, but that leaves 3 other sensible B moves, plus leaving the B where it is. I guess Bb4 and Bc5 get in the way of the rook, but why is Ba3 better than Be7 immediately?

I think it’s because of a possible Bc1 to attack the root of the pawn chain?! But what do I know...

13:59 isn't Nxh7 simply winning a pawn? Without any goodies for black to hang to? Just looks like lights out to me. EDIT: I see that Bc5 is a strong reply and would win back the pawn on f2. Still unclear to me then since Ne4 forks are looming after Ng5 retreat.
