Hey you’re the Powerstroke King Bill! I’ve been watching you for years! I have an early 99 7.3 with 340k miles. Owned since 230k miles (8 yrs). Still runs strong and starts good. Daily driver work truck, with some light to medium towing. Mileage and power is down and smokes fairly blue on start up. Keep good clean oil, clean air filter, fuel filter, tank pickup screens, cleaned exhaust back pressure line and sensor, bla bla bla, keep up on the small things. I figure injectors are just getting worn although they still operate well if you know what I mean. Thinking to go full force stage 1 (180cc/0 over) injectors, and a hydra chip with jelibuilt tunes, glow plugs, cover gaskets and harness. Going for slight increase in power, mileage, and longevity. Would love to still be driving her everyday at a million miles! Curious to know if anyone thinks I’m nuts or does it make sense giving the premis that I plan to keep the truck for the long haul?

We have 4 7.3's in the family. All of them have over 250K. I just put a trans in my brothers truck @ 280K miles. I got it from Ford for $2400 with a three year unlimited mile warranty. I also installed a 6.0 cooler :) My truck is the only one that has had problems with the engine due to pushing it to 50 PSI of boost. It had 275K on it when it lost #2. I rebuilt it myself with a Ford OH kit. It now has head studs and I had all the sharp edges on the pistons machined. My truck also has a fully built BTS Trans :) and a few other mods. She runs and drives like a new truck...

I bought a 2003 F250 Lariat extended cab long bed 7.3L with 82K original miles on it for $13.5K here in Texas from the original owner who used it for towing a 5th wheel the first 40K miles then gave it to his son who used it for a daily driver for the next 40k miles or so, he then sold it to me. I guess it was two owners but in the same family anyway. It's about as clean as it can be.

My 2001 7.3 has 354K miles, the first 4R100 failed at 84K miles, I now have a 4R100HD with 260K miles on it. I tow with it regularly and the truck has been all over the country including Alaska. I did put the 6.0 cooler and external trans filter and a temp gauge to monitor temps. What are the differences between the 4R100 and the HD version? I have not been able to find a good answer to what the differences are.

We have an international 4700 26,000 gvwr truck which is on its 2nd 444/7.3 1996 era with 380,000 grueling miles and it's still has the original allison 4spd. automatic in it. They are the toughest transmission made. Those big scrapers and a lot of other heavy equipment have Allison automatics. Allison is owned by general motors so that is why ford don't have them. My personal truck is a 97 f-350 7.3 and an E4od transmission which I have had 0 problems with. I have changed the fluid and filter every 25,000 miles religiously, a must do on them. I also drove tractor trailers for 45 years so I know what you can realistically can expect from a diesel pickup when towing. You have to drive them like you are paying the bills out of your own pocket and if you want them to last 23 years you have to drive them that way. I love my truck and I plan to be buried in it when I die.

You're talking about an electronically controlled transmission vs a pneumatic transmission. To get on to bolt up is one thing, but the truck has to be able to communicate with a 5r110

The 6 speed manual is also a weak link. My dad had around 300,000 miles on it and had to get it replaced and all he towed with it was a 1,600 pound hooftrimming table used to trim hooves on dairy cows. He's got a 2002 F-250.

The early 99 tranny came oem with the 4 pin aluminum planetary. It may have changed before the turbo but not long. I had a front pump seal go so when I dropped it I looked, and replaced the aluminum planetary and put a billet converter in it as they've been known to drop a load as well. Other than that mine is box stock and still going at 300k . I only do occasional dumb stuff with it , but it's still going well . No fire breather. But as I get older I'd rather thump the wife's Shelby.... 😎 Cheers.

It is in theory possible to swap in a newer 5 or 6 speed, but the effort is just insane. The real devil is A. the stock computer and B. the new TCU for the newer transmission. Its really a pretty tricky deal getting the electronics to work right when swapping transmissions.

I bought my 7.3 with 217k miles for $8k knowing good and well what I was getting into. Since I've had the truck I had to put a new starter in it, new radiator, new coolant expansion tank, new hoses, new water pump, new fan clutch, new alternator, new belt tensioner, new belt, resealed the fuel bowl, resealed the oil cooler, new glow plugs, installed a catch can, new pads and rotors/hubs all around, new wheel bearings, new tires, new ball joints, new steering linkage, upgraded turbo, International bellowed up-pipes, EBV delete, 4" exhaust system, and set of new tires (twice). That's not including the body work I've had to do to it or the few accessories I installed. My latest venture with it now is getting a new transmission for it. Good times.

MrNotorius5500 Wow sounds like we are in the same boat. I payed 7300 for mine but didn't know what I was getting into lol. I have had the transmission worked on have replaced the starter, power steering pump twice. Fixed the pickup in the tank on second set of tires need to do brakes again also. I have a mbrp 5inch exhaust tymar intake stage 1 injectors and tuned it on the dyno, that was a lot of money there. Had a crank no start situation that lasted for months finally had to put truck in shop 6 weeks later got it back month later broke again. Water pump failed this time plus I have to install a radiator new hoses thermostat and housing. I'm learning to work on it though but it stays broke most of the time. I baby the truck but previous owner I later found didnt. Lady t-boned me now I have bunch of body work to fix😠. Not sure if I will keep sinking money into it, I figure I have 8-9 grand in parts and labor tied up and still have more to go it's in my driveway broke as I type this.

My truck was a theft recovery that I picked up from a UCD in Arizona. In its previous life it was a fleet truck that used to pull heavy trailers (evident by the hideaway gooseneck hitch in the bed rated at 25k pounds). The only real reason I bought the truck was the engine because of its reputation for being reliable. That's not to say everything else doesn't go wrong with it as you and I know lol. By the way since I posted last, I got a new transmission put in it. Did it all by myself :P

That's just it. Like he said, if you take good care of your truck and do the required maintenance, then you don't have this much wear & tear on the trans and other items. A lot of folks take these trucks and run the p*ss out of them, don't take care of them, then they patch them up and put a little spit polish on them so they can unload it onto someone else....

I have a 6.0 and a 7.3 and its easier to swap a transmission than it is to put new headgaskets in. Thats just my opinion though

Bill, the Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety Program uses, among others, a 99 7.3 F250. 170K miles. I routinely tow a trailer with 15 motorcycles across the state. Not sure of the trailer itself, but the truck and trailer weigh 18,500. When I tow, I typically set the cruise at 53 on "tow". She isnt going to win a race, but she gets it done. Given what you are seeing with stock 7.3s, am I asking for trouble?

Was that a dually truck from the factory, or did they change it? The fender liners are missing in the back, which may mean the flares are add-ons.

I know normally talking price isn't the smartest thing cause in 6 months, One of those parts could skyrocket in price and their rebuild price goes up 500+ But, How much for the full upgrade/rebuild right now? Been looking at a 7.3 Auto 8 inch lift 37's But the trans is gone, Like you'd expect.

See that makes me think, he bought that 1993 7.3 350 might be 450 regardless for 12 grand , but he needed a trans from the start and got lucky honestly to need a new case and some of the parts for the trans itself, granted it was previous owner and the shop he used to blame, along with the needed servicing and batteries plus its bottle necked with the very small turbo and low shooting injectors if hes wanting any impressive power he will need to do that along with the air intake needed to be changed out for atleast a CAI intake regardless! But my point is for $12,000 cash and a set of used Fuel Off-Road Rims i bought my 2004.5 LLY Duramax, Proper proof and paperwork on Headgasket replacement and ARP studs being installed, Has a new 72m VT Garrett Turbo, 40% over injectors, lift pump, CIA intake, PPE bridge, inlet, up and down pipes along with 4 inch turbo back exhaust, so far my current issue i've had to fix was the Filter Head Assembly with the primer on top was old and was not able to seal to pull prime and the metal around the primer was bent with airbleeder screw port had threads missing, Bought a seal kit before i knew the whole head was bent, so i tried it only for it to lose prime again 2 miles down the road, got a Filter Head Assembly with a new factory filter with new WIF sensor and Fuel heater, while installing it i noticed the in-out fuel lines into the head where soft and really briddle filled with cracks, went and bought some special fuel lines that are reall pretty looking but are support to hold up forever against diesel fuel, After the install it was good! My truck being an LLY i dont have the nice 6speed Allison, mine has the 5 speed version. The 5 speed goes into limp mode with very little effort, Your battery cable become ever so slighlty loose? limp mode. Dump on the fuel hard then let off after the pull in to fast or a manner? Hey look fuel rail lost to much pressure!, limp mode. Just last week i had it go into limp mode after a regular shift, wasnt sloppy or slushy, wasnt so firm that it really jolted the truck, it was a nice firm connecting shift but the computer read it slipped. And i mean Trans limp and Engine limp when i was limp mode. 2000 RPM limit and no higher than 3rd gear, sometimes it will even cut boost psi to what seems like a 5psi limit. Im in the process of gettin a price and things needed list thave a built 6speed allison trans put in to replace the 5 speed model, i know ive got to have the TCM for the 6 speed, But hey Bill do you know anyone with Duramax Experience you could refer me to? For something as serious as changing a trans to a whole different model trans id rather pay properly for piece of mind!
