My Uncle had a 97 F250 7.3. 4x4 4dr. He died last year and his wife sold it for $20,000. 1 owner, garage kept, dealer serviced, 24,000 miles and it had never towed or been wrecked. I was shocked that she got $20,000 for it and it sold in 2 days. People are definitely still interested in the OBS.

Perfect explanation of these older trucks, and any older vehicle in general. You start tearing into one repair and everything associated with it becomes more work... O rings, hoses, metal lines, wiring, connectors, fasteners, if you want it fixed right you have to pay. If you just want "the one issue" fixed (like a clogged filter) then you haven't really made your truck any more reliable. You are just keeping it going.

Old trucks usually need work. Mechanics aren't usually needed to work on brand new trucks but mechanics that have made a lot of money and can buy brand new trucks often don't want to work on old trucks. It's just the circle of life in the life cycle of the mechanic.

It is worth keeping and rebuilding because of being a California truck. No smog, no emissions, and much cheaper registration. In your sweep with the camera it looked like a solid axle. F-250s in that era were TTB. Was it a decent axle swap?

Great video. This explains why in 2021 you should be migrating to only newer 2014 and later 6.7l diesels and keep them stock. The cost of repairs a large expense along with parts cost. I also suggest new vehicle purchases only. I own 4 pickup trucks a F-150 114k manual farm truck (weekends), a 1999 Tacoma 242k daily driver, a 2012 F-250 68k gas auto cattle hauler, and a 2016 6,7L distance driver (weekend) 3 to 5 hour runs 72k. All purchased new and are stock. My Colorado girl F-150 has allot of shakes and rattles though but she’s 28 years old.

My 1997 F350 7.3 is worth every bit of 8-10 grand to restore to new. It has been a great work horse back when I needed it. It's in great shape and is just about to turn over 200,000 miles. The red vermillion paint is not as glossy but I'd still love to rebuild the motor. No it doesn't look anything like this guys truck with after market stuff, It still is 100 percent stock. Only thing I've had to replace are the glow plugs 21 years ago and glow plug relay twice. The rest is just normal maintenance.

Hehe. sarcasm afternoon. I used to do warranty work in the 6.9IDI. The 7.3DI as it was originally called was quite unreliable at the start. Unreliable until they added some Teflon to the injector O-rings....did soo many of those things. Thereafter, they were pretty damned reliable 'cept for the same o-ring problem on the IPR filling the filter housing full of junk and causing a no-start. Engineering fixed these things fast. fast though. I think they were better days but they are nostalgia now.

Had that switching valve on a GAS 1987 Econoline van it would return the fuel to whatever tank it wanted. Big problem if you filled up both tanks. That is why the ambulances were going up in flames. I replaced the valve and put 2 boat Mercruiser spinoff filters before the switching valve. Then it worked fine.

Strangely enough, I have a 1996 F250 that I bought used on eBay over 20 years ago with 107,000. Now with 247,000 miles, the problems are becoming evident. I was driving a load of trash to the dump when it downshifted and then died on the spot. I am highly suspicious of my fuel tank switch, and now that I know that it's $500, I am having second thoughts about messing with it. I bought a high end OBDII tester to learn that (1) my truck is not OBDII compliant. although they had a setting that worked for non-OBDII types of diesel, and (2) once it was communicating, it showed a P1111 code, meaning nothing was showing up. My determination was that it was likely to be a mechanical issue such as a fuel pump. Is there a way to flush a sticking valve if it comes down to that? Thanks. I have followed you for years and you have been very helpful.

I have a 1994 f350 and I can check codes and monitor engine vitals using my cell phone and torque app.

@Klaus Van Heusen The Auto Enginuity Ford bundle is what I bought. I have to set it to non-OBDII, but then I get P1111. I have always used Ford filters and change them often. I can only use the features that pertain to a non-running engine, so maybe something would show up if it ever starts. All the fuse and relay check have been done with a VOM and the glowplugs were changed about a year ago by a pro. He said the old ones were in great shape but he put in the new ones since I had already bought them. I haven't bought a fuel pressure gage yet. The last time the truck quit randomly a mechanic said it was caused by a loose banjo bolt on the fuel transfer pump. I will likely not be doing much to the truck in cold weather since I have no good place to work on it. Thank for your reply.

@@centraltexasfoxbodies It cranks like mad but won't start. I don't really have any vitals to monitor until it starts. Thanks for your input.

@@garygroth6402 when it cranks does your tach move? If it doesn't it could be the crank position sensor.

I thought you made a decision a year or 2 ago that you will no longer work on 7.3 L?? I’ve owned many over the years. My 02’ 7.3L is well maintained and pristine at 136,000 miles and all OEM replacement parts. If it wasn’t for the leaf springs it would be up to par with the ride on most new trucks. There’s not much that she can’t handle with a mild tune exhaust and intake. Just rebuilt the entire Trans with all of the Ford OEM updated parts as well as some billet shafts and TC about 8000 miles ago. My only nightmare In my foreseeable future is my oil pan needs to be replaced no later than next year. She is in bad shape and is really the only thing that rusted away. But she is worth it. There is only one person in my area that I would trust with this task and it will not be a cheap fix to do properly. Engine is being pulled

There is a gasket that is available that some have had success without pulling the engine.

I live in central Indiana and it's hard to find a good diesel mechanic. Dealers don't employ anyone that was working during the 7.3 years, independents want fleet work only.
