It doesn't help that Wuk Lamat is not very well written. This is a problem with this expansion in general, but since all we seen from her is from this expansion... The players couldn't know her before she was written this way. Also that the player is forced to have her at their side for such a long period of the expansion. Any character would be annoying if the player is forced to have them at their side for too long. I think perhaps if she was less present, the moments with the character would be more enjoyable, and people might even like her more.

just met her in-game a couple of minutes ago, english ... the japanese & french sounds awesome, followed closely by german... it's the energy in the delivery, the japanese dub particularly, is along the lines of what i was expecting all this time, and french follows it very well. English dub is a little too mellow or reserved for her image IMO. "I can't allow it" sounds like what they were aiming for, but immediately after, "no matter what" sounds jarringly casual/american, and it goes back to the previous sound in "i must win this contest"

English isnt a "dub", its the original as the character is meant to much like Lyne and Feo Ul in ShB. You aren't familiar with the regional ethnic accent, its unique intonations and vocalizations. You mistaking that one bit for "casual/american" is an especially big sign of you trying to mentally grab onto surface level familiarity that doesnt exist. She fits the character to a T.

@@tenjenk "dub" = me referring to (informal)version/language... which language is an actual dub, doesnt matter cos it doesn't change any of my points... and Feo Ul never changed regional ethnic accent/unique intonations/vocalizations mid sentence multiple times. Japanese & French (and german slightly further) dubs are what i expected the character to sound like, from seeing how the character moves about, interacts, gestures, emotions etc. Watch the steak eating scene.. japanese 4:05, french 4:40, german 5:15 .... with the anime streak lines and the pose, the voices compliment that sense of wonderment at a shockingly delicious, unexpectedly superb meal. now go watch the english one 3:30 .... it is the equivalent of a KingOfFighters super ultra final secret boss' super ultra final secret attack that requires 10 power bars, flashing red 1 pixel life bar, a sacrificial lamb and a total eclipse of the sun... being one basic light kick animation doing one basic light kick damage. tl;dr -so far, japanese, french & german dubs fit the character way better than the english version.... and the regional ethnic accent, unique intonations and vocalizations sound inconsistent.

@shoux the inconsistency is part of the authenticity. Many multilingual people taking on another language speak that way, especially given that Tural recently adapted a language based on common. Ive soent dealing with people in such a transitionary state and heard all of them through her when she was speaking. As my initial point said the other voices are just (mostly) speaking their own language well but not emulating the "stranger in a strange land" position she is in. Hell we have in the US who only speak english have varying accents when they move states to a place with said accent, and if exposed to their old area, their accept rises back up and it takes a while to break out of its habit, which leads to vocal inconsistencies in how they speak.

Imagine, Zero having a happy squeaky chirpy cute anime girl voice (e.g search for Ellis, Battle Arena Toshinden) .. would you defend it saying some people you met in real life tend to mask their sadness and depression by projecting happiness unto those around them in an attempt to hide their pain? I certainly have met them. But it still would be out of character, for this situation, plain & simple. The point about the other voices just speaking their language well but not emulating the 'stranger in a strange land' is a very good point, and I see what you mean. Unfortunately, it comes back to my point that the english voice acting does not reflect what is going on screen, which is awkward since english is supposed to be the original and the other 3 languages are the dubs. My suspicion is the english voice acting was recorded earlier based on storyboard scripts, before the scenes were actually animated, and the other languages done after. That would explain the discrepancy, but ehh, who knows...

It's especially noticeable when comparing to the other VAs.

I prefer to play the game in Japanese. I think the JP VA did a great job. It would have been better if they gave her a different dialect, like Kansai. Still definitely better than the impression I got from the trailer. As for English, I liked how she sounded in the trailer, but the voice acting in these cutscenes seems a little inconsistent from one scene to the next. Maybe it was an issue of direction.

I'd say direction is the issue as well. It took the current VA crew from Heavemsward on a bit of time to relax into their roles; if you go back to raw 3.0 Alphinaud he's pretty stiff back then too. The English voices (as well as the French and German) are also filmed solo in a booth, whereas the Japanese voices are probably done ensemble style in the SE building, so they have much better energy and rapport with one another.

I dont think the JP Va did a great job at all. Because theyve only done a great job at... speaking japanese. Just conventional japanese like its your neighbour visiting you to bother you about your 2nd kid having getting isekai'd into a smear on the road by yet another lorry. its not them speaking as a character from a relatively newly discovered continent who has come to eorzia for the first time. Thats what makes the English Va the best here. I've tested and taught foreigners from all over with varied levels of english-speaking abilities and the english VA has done an onpoint job of brilliantly expressing that this is someone whose 1st language's intonations and vocalizations are coming across into common as an accent. The other languages arent even trying (the german one fails at its own language). The JP could have not only benefited from using a Kansai dialect to match the character better but used the deeper more dominating japanese female accent and speaking style. Instead its too squeaky for someone like Luk Lamat

EN here is a prime example of what happens when you hire not based on talent, but a person's personality traits and gender. The VA is unable to put much emotion into emotional scenes in Dawntrail because if they do their male voice will show through, it already kind of does here and they are not even being particularly emotional. Like Wuk Lamat felt very flat to me when I went through Dawntrail and it's clear why now when the VA is just not able to put much emotion in without it messing up their voice. If a VA like this was hired to be a main lead for a massive MMO like FFXIV and it's new expansion, then I too am a worthy VA.

great. Bigoted on so many levels. There werent any spanish around for a spanish inquisition. I remember other better idiots saying this about Lyne, Feo Ul and the (actual conventional and natural) indian accents in Thavnair. People feel it is off because they have no exposure to any ethnic accent with its intonations/vocalizations impacting how they speak english (while those same people feeling its off never realize their own English sounds accented to others). In English, she comes across as someone new to the continent who is using Eorzian common as a 2nd language. I have tested and thought foreigners with varying levels of English and the VA has done an amazing job emulating it.

The difference is noticeable compared to the other three countries, but when playing in Japanese, it is not so noticeable because the other characters also have anime voices. Franch There are a lot of languages and they sound fast. It must have been difficult to match the dialogue to the story timeline. German This sounded the best for the characters. English No comment

But damn... after hearing the German Venat (who's incredible, despite having a... less than perfect script to work with), I was having some hope for the German VA, but nope... once again someone sounding more like reading a book to an audience, than acting out a scene. It's too clearly and precisely pronounced, like it's being read for children to learn proper High German from, which would already be a bit out of place for a prim and proper character, but for someone who's more of a rough and tumble kind, that seems to dislike protocol and formalities, it clashes horribly with their personality. And the script... technically correct, but no real person would ever word things like that in casual conversation. It just feels unnatural all the way through. :/ I feel like Square really needs to replace their German script writers and voice director.

Regional accents is good and bad for recent Final Fantasy games in English in my opinion. The only recent FF game I played in full English dub was FFXVI because it seemed that Yoshi-P and the team really put a lot of effort in the English cast, I could go with either dub in FFVII Remake and Rebirth, I chose Japanese because I didn't want to run into a "Dilly dally, shilly shally" line and I've always played FFXIV in Japanese dub since 2014 so I never had an issue with Wuk Lamat. Oh course, it could be the VA itself that just didn't do a good job, this was my main issue with RE4 Remake Ada Wong being a big Asian actress as she was Ada Wong for 5 minutes in Welcome to Raccoon City and The Expanse.
