The reason the PPQ did not fire was because there was water inside the striker channel which would act as a buffer and slow the striker down to the point where it would not ignite the primer. After the slide was racked, the water was able to escape and the PPQ continued to fire.

I was going to say the exact same thing I only own three pistols px4, g17, and the p07. I noticed that my g17 had the same problem but I fixed It a while ago I just bought an aftermarket striker so it doesn't act like a piston

+Jon Hammett Spot on! The Navy version has a hole drilled into the striker channel to relieve the pressure; along with some cuts in the spring retainer to allow the water to flow more freely. I have considered milling a groove in mine to see if it solves the problem.

@@SectionChief the px4 is beretta. But the pt92 specifically was a Beretta plant and beretta sold the plant to taurus cause it would be too expensive to move everything so all taurus had to do was fire up the machines.

Thanks for posting a genuine "torture test" video. Good illustration of why handguns are generally less reliable than rifles/carbines. I agree that the PPQ has water in the striker channel. Perhaps another striker-fired gun would have added to the comparison. The must seemed to do in most of the handguns. Thanks for sharing.

Forget all the hate in the comments, I thought it was an interesting and informative test. I carry a CZ and I was worried about the mud once you brought it out. ***** They all were pretty submerged if you ask me. The first round the PPQ was in the water longer, about 9 seconds vs about 6 on the others which was a mistake, but the second round, they all were under for around 17 seconds, and none of the hammer fired guns had a misfire on the first round like the PPQ did on the first round (about 9 seconds under water) and on the second round (about 17 seconds). I love CZs and its still my preferred carry guns, but I gained new respect for the PPQ and Taurus.

I figured the PX4 would do a little better, and the PPQ is an updated version of the venerable P99, the PPQ without the navy modifications will always fail to fire the first round after it's submerged, because of water around the firing pin, kinda like the Glock without maritime spring cups.
@DavidTMSN
@DavidTMSN 7 жыл бұрын
Also, they are using steel cased ammunition. Nothing wrong with that for plinking, but you would never use cheap steel cased ammo in a self-defense situation. It's oxymoronic to claim like the man does in the end that you would be sol in a self-defense situation when in fact they are not even using quality brass fmj ball ammo - let alone self-defense ammo.

If you gum up the slide with clay laden mud, and it gets into the guide rails, unless you have a super heavy spring on it, most guns are going to have issues. Gotta use some of that water to wash at least a little of that grime out of the rails.

prayerfully you will never be in a situation where youre up to youre waist in mud with only one of these handguns at the mercy of a terrible gun fight if so you have been warned. the ppq is jaming the first round because the water in the striking mechanism is pushing against the firing pin's cups creating a lot of resistance almost like a plunging motion and this doesn't allow the pin to strike the primer hard enough. This is why a lot of people install maritime cups that have holes in them or aren't complete circles going around the firing pin. That way when you pull the trigger that first time and the striking mechanism is full of water, it can pass through the holes or cut parts of the maritime cups and the pin can still strike the primer with enough force to ignite. The PT92 failed because it's all metal and those extremely tight tolerances are a lot less suited for dust, grime, mud, dirt, than the larger tolerances of a polymer framed hand gun. honestly don't know why the px4 and p-09 failed... i believe it's just lack of quality compared to the ppq seeing as how they're also polymer framed hand guns.
@Phoenix-214

There's also the possibility that it has something to do with the fact that the pistols which choked were all hammer-fired. Maybe something about the way striker-fired handguns are built makes their slides less likely to get bogged down by mud? Glocks and PPQs tend to do pretty well with this sort of test, hydro-lock issues aside. I mean, this is hardly conclusive, but that was one of the main distinguishing features of the PPQ versus the other pistols. Maybe this channel should do another test with some more striker-fired pistols to see if there's a consistent pattern of greater resistance to mud, or if it's just the PPQ specifically that works well. Part of the reason I'm thinking this is CZ handguns are very high-quality, especially relative to their price, and Berettas are pretty solid, too. It may have more to do with minute design differences than the materials used. After all, the (in)famous Rex Zero 1 handled a similar test on the MAC extremely well despite being metal-framed, specifically aluminum. It was also hammer-fired, which casts some doubt on my own guess.

I think after getting my first shot off I would rinse my gun off in the muddy water to at lease minimize the major grit causing the failures. It did a lot worse than the PPQ. It fucking failed. If one really is concerned about water function of the PPQ, all you have to do is buy the Navy model striker retainer parts from Walther for $5. The Navy retainers allow water to exit the striker channel more easily. Trivial solution. The VP9 had more serious issues than that, and it doesn't even have a Navy model.

Wow, so many butthurt ego's around here. If either of these guns were used to go to war, and a soldier accidentally dropped one in thick mud while trying to get cover from enemy fire, I'm sure in the real world the soldier would say "Wait guys, I have to wait until all the air bubbles are out before I grab it. Don't mind the bullets flying past our heads." Jeez, get a grip, people. If the gun fails, it fails. Guns are machines, and any machine can stop functioning properly if debris reaches the internals. If someone throws a bucket of sand in an airliner engine that causes the engine to explode, are all you pansies going to cry foul and say that the engine would have kept working if it was going top speed instead of take-off speed? Let's just all agree then that a car would be totally fine if mud reached the pistons as long as the car is moving versus idling in park. Or that a mechanical clock would still work if you threw a few nails in the gears.

+andrew goffy If your gun works in the worst possibility, then it will definitely work in something less. The key is to do it to your own gun, not watch a KZbin video to determine if your firearm is reliable. You have to be proactive and dunk it in a barrel of water and wipe it down with dirt to make sure it will function. Every gun is different.

should use a slightly more scientific approach. However, thanks for taking the time to give us an idea. Kudos
