EDIT: apparently these aren't made of space-age material, but of carbon fiber composite. I believe these vests are a fusion of aramid kevlar, and an unknown type of material that seizes up/becomes stiff upon high impact. Clearly these vests would be worth what they are if extensive, breakthrough materials unused before we're in the vest, but if these are just aramid kevlar and some other common material, then wearing chainmaille would be a more viable option than paying into these people's pockets.

The fact he's still upright speaks volumes though; a bat in the back without the armour and he'd likely be en-route to hospital for spinal damage. Any pain is going to trigger you to try and protect yourself, hell, you don't even need pain to flinch and put up your guard, he could have flinched knowing the hit was coming. Most stab vests would easily be defeated with a bat, this one would give the wearer the opportunity to either retaliate, or retreat; which is the whole point of protective equipment: Keeping you alive.

Getting hit with a glock at a good range in your more standard body armor for American police (NIJ level II) stops 9mm, but holy fuck does it hurt anyway; expect to get some bruising, getting knocked on your ass, a cracked rib, etc. from a blow like that. Kinetic energy is a bitch.

It doesn't take training to do what he did, what he showed is actually the perfect demonstration of the average attacker trying to kill you. IRL, they aren't going to pull their punches, or in this case, pull their stabs, so the guy demonstrating the armor didn't either.
