Hi, I must say I absolutely LOVE this channel. the instructions are clear and to the point, the technical quality of the videos (lighting, resolution etc.) is awesome! I was wondering if you could share some kind of list what to train week-by-week (as you shown Week 2 for Olive)? OF COURSE every dog is different and it would need to tailor the program individually, but... I am getting my new puppy in 10 days (my 3rd dog, mini Schnauzer again) and I would like to do it a bit better this time (incl. crate training etc.). So I am reading materials (BEFORE, AFTER), watching videos and ... I am a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of the of the information. So simplified time frame would be a great help! Greetings from the Czech Republic :)

I found the Perfect Puppy in 7days by Dr Sophia Yin and Before and After getting your puppy by Dr Ian Dunbar. They were one of the early pioneers of positive reinforcement training that most other trainers use. These books are simple, easy and practical. At the end there is a checklist that's is helpful too.

LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. We just adopted Macee, a one year old Rott mix (she is only 40 lbs.) She unfortunately has a horrible background of abuse so her training has been a bit of a challenge and your videos have helped so much. This video comes at a great time as she likes to chew holes in anything fabric, like our socks and the pillows off our couch. I was lost as how to deal with this because she just "shuts down" when you take something from her or she thinks you are unhappy in any way even if you are gentle and show no anger. After watching your video, I now I have hope to solve this problem without scaring her! She is such a sweet girl and I want her to be happy and feel safe in her new home! By the way, do you think you might be doing any videos that deal with training abused dogs, and specifically walking them. She walks great unless she sees a man or another dog, then there is no stopping the barking and pulling often while she hides behind me. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get tied up in her leash and land on my butt one of these days. Thanks again for all of your wonderful videos!

Thank you for this video! Our new shelter rescue is 8 months old and has never had a home with toys, so he really didn’t know what to do with Nylabones. After I roughed his up with a cheese grater, he’s happily chewing on the one he’s been ignoring all week! It was an instant fix! I’m also feeding him using frozen Kongs and it’s going great. Thanks for all your tips!

Your Chanel is what I needed exactly. I have a Fox terrier, and he has separation/isolation anxiety, sometimes it’s gone for months then comes back with full force. I watch your videos, and realized my mistakes immediately. Pls do more videos on how to engage dogs with toys, and indoor enrichment, these really helped me, because my dog is completely uninterested in toys so he didn’t have any stress outlet when he was alone, and now this is changing. Finally I have hope again! Thank you!

I adopted my dog last year. He was apparently trained to GOP for a toy when anyone cane home. At first I thought it was a weird habit. Then, after being jumped on by him....I realized what a powerful trick it was! He didn't know sit, stay, recall. I doubt they used a different language because everything seemed to be from scratch. But that habit of getting excited and then going looking for a toy is the best thing I ever come home to now.

We have a 6 month old who's just not been that interested in chewing. Kong just get licked and shaken but she just leaves stuff in there if she can't get it out easily. Finally found that rawhide rings soaked in beef stock for an hour to soften and flavour worked really well and got her properly interested (and still last for ages). This video is great to help us with next steps as we have been struggling for how to transition on to proper chew toys. Will definitely try the roughning up of some nylabone ones next and I make sure I use more praise as we maybe did forget this step a bit as well! Thanks for all your awesome videos. Wish I had discovered them before we got our pup as have realised how many thing we could have done better from the start!

Update: I started using a clicker because if I verbally praised then she would get distracted thinking I was up for playing a game (5am is her favourite time to go hunt socks, I really need her to occupy herself!). This made a difference and also let me reward slightly more quietly and not wake my husband. So now she will still go looking for clothes etc as a first thought, but after a couple of 'no' signals from me, she'll come to her bed and get her chewy. Now, if I could just get beyond 5 secs of play with it between treats! Just posting by way of encouragement for other people, it is improving slowly. In the meantime, if anyone has tips for a dog who just gets up too early? She has an amazing capacity to get up half an hour before the alarm. And then she is well and truly up.

Hi, I have watched a few of your videos and like your approach. I have a Boxador that I have had for about a week, I am looking for a way to praise her with out her getting so excited that she jumps. It's not only then, but I have been hit in the face any time I have praised her for learning what I want and my husband gets it when he gets home. I know it's from her happiness and love, but she does need to learn not to jump.

Nice video! Great tips for those of us having high energy dogs who get bored while home alone. My solution so far has been rawhide bones, but it may get expensive for me, because I didn't manage to interest her in chew toys so much. During the week I have to leave my dog alone in the house for about 5 hours and unless she has a rawhide, she starts eating the walls! :D

We rescued a Scottish Terrier 3 years ago when he was around 5 years old. He LOVES squeaky toys and does have a goal of destroying them in no time flat (with most of them, some, he never does, just carries around). We throw them and he chases them and gets a lot of exercise and has never, ever chewed anything else in our house. Guess we are lucky with him! We won’t start our new puppy on squeaky toys though, especially since she will be a service dog.

I never leave comments on videos [and I watch A LOT of KZbin], but I feel absolutely compelled to leave this message for you. We adopted a 9 week old Australian Cattle Dog/ German Sheppard mix to be raised up as my emotional support animal for my anxiety, and we've only had her a week. I have cried 3 times this week, felt desperate and hopeless, and have thought that I have the worst puppy ever [even though she truly is a gem and very smart]. She already knows how to go to the door when she has to potty, she knows how to sleep in her crate without whining, and she hardly barks when left alone. What is killing me and making me regret my decision for an ESA, is that she is impossible when we take her outside to potty. We can't take her far yet because she doesn't have all of her shots, but all she does is jump around and eat leaves, pull at and chew on her leash, and not listen to me or take her toys or treats. Your videos have made me realize that I can't expect her to be perfect already without having given her some guidance. The stress of training her is really getting to me, but your videos give me a tremendous amount of hope that I can train her to be calm, which will in turn help me be calm. I just hope my week of mistakes and frustration at her haven't done too much damage. Thank you so much for all of your knowledge and hard work in these videos.

We adopted a two year old doberman/blk lab mix. She is a ball of energy and hyper intelligent! She came from the south with 0 house skills. Our first rescue never had a chewing behavior at all. So much so he wouldn't touch toys. But the new girl loves, to put everything in her mouth and chew!! And she makes a game out of snatching things and running! When I am getting ready to put my 12 week Shorkey down for his nap (crate time) we have a snuggle first. He’s on my lap and chooses one of his high value chew toys like a churpi durka, dried pig skin, edible nylabone (the ones I like to watch him closely on) chew toys and I have my coffee and massage him and tell him how loved he is. Lol It’s become a moment we both look forward to and I have noticed he is seeking out his play pen chew toys on his own more and he is chewing on his crate chewers. I keep diff ones (that he’s shown lots of interest for) in diff spots so he’s excited to visit with his crate one or play area one, or the car carrier one.

Thanks. We, too, are getting a puppy soon so your videos are timely and great. Do you link a word for their chew toy, like "chewie"? So, in the future you can ask the puppy to get a chewie. Also, do you have info on hand feeding a puppy when you first bring her home? Again, thanks for the great content.
@SimpawticoDogTraining
@SimpawticoDogTraining 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah absolutely you could link the word. Then, you can use it for Specific Redirection when you're stopping them from chewing something unapproved. It tells them, "Hey, you're not supposed to chew on that, also you're supposed to chew on a chewie!" Also good for Directed Retrieves, like "Go get your chewie!"

I have a Sprocker who has been with me for a week. He's five years old, and before coming to me lived with two other dogs for 4 four years, but they've had to be separated because they started to fight. I can't seem to interest him in playing tug, fetch, or to chew anything. He is motivated by training treats and I can lure him, but 90% of the rest of the day he sleeps and is pretty lethargic. When he does go outside he is active and constantly sniffs and marks his scent and goes potty outside with ease. He's also a fussy eater to, some treats he likes others he doesn't. He's been checked by the vet and has a clean bill of health. He's very affectionate and will go on his back for a belly rub with ease, and will come over to encourage this kind of attention to be given to him. He follows me about the house and doesn't leave my side, other than going to get a drink of water and comes straight back. How do I encourage him to chew on toys? Or is having a dog that just doesn't chew or destroy anything a gift I can't appreciate.

As i have more dog time because of covid I notice how much energy my dog has. I know its her breed (border collie) but i want to really her to be more independent. She loves interactive toys (fetch) and constantly asking for play which i never deny her. With our 2 2 hour walks a day , an hour of fetch outside and whatever we play inside she sleeps all day which is great but still whines and over focus on me. I want to make her life better by making sure when needs to be away from me she can relax by her means of toys. Thank for you the video. I use elk antlers and dental chews but they are high prices. Until now I never knew the importance of chew toys because my dog is not interested in them but she loves chewing on plushies and ripping them. Hopefully I can succeed in this area!!! Thank you

Neither of my dogs liked chew toys. I followed the instructions in this video for both of them, and now one of them loves chew toys, and the other one still doesn't get it. Any time I started praising her when she nosed it, she would just forget about the toy and ask for more attention. She is the dog I thought would most benefit from chew toys, because she's often anxious, but I can't figure out how to get her interested in them.

Our new adopted dog, Mister, gets crazy jealous when we start giving our chinchilla, Leeloo, attention. He will get up to the cage and it seems like he's trying to intimidate her, doesn't want to get in the cage, but is trying to show it's his house now. We don't want this, we want Leeloo to feel just as comfortable as Mister! This video helped us come up with a solution! When myself of my SO starts talking to Leeloo, the other tries to get Mister to ignore Leeloo. Once he gets away from the cage, we praise him, give him a toy, and praise again. We're hoping that he understands that when he starts feeling jealous, he needs to preoccupy himself with another activity. It's a work in progress, but we feel more comfortable at least having a strategy now!

Good points, our puppy was ravinously chewing due to her teething, the teeth are coming now so we just use her chew toys to entertain like you say and to train. Thank God for Kongs, we also use the heavy duty ropes that are cotton, she is pretty smart to avoid what we don't want, I am concerned though that later I might not get her to retrieve something I need, I guess we will cross that bridge when we get to it, we will use your tips on targeting.

I’ve been watching a few videos and I was so surprised at how much I thought was true was actually wrong. I watched people I thought were qualified and now I’m not so sure, maybe you could do a reactor series looking at other dog training videos? I’m particularly talking about Zak, who has very different puppy training techniques then I’ve seen in other videos (loose leash, pulling away from puppy biting, letting the dog walk on either side, etc.)

Is there a specific type of Nylabone you recommend? I see on their website that they have MANY options... Having never seen them in person, I'm unsure what to go with. Also, I want to say, that I have been watching your channel religiously since I found out I was getting a puppy! We still have another 39 days to wait to take Kawhi home, but under all this joy, I'm feeling the nervousness I was feeling turn in to genuine excitement because I know what to expect. My husband and I have agreed to make him our first priority and have already detailed out our management plan. I can't wait to take what I've learned and put it into practice!

Hi Abby! Great to hear you're all prepared! Wonderful job and I hope it's fun and exciting for you! As for Nylabones, it's kind of hard because it depends a bit on your dog's preferences. The colors generally denote hardness (e.g. white is the hardest, translucent are usually the softest, etc). Some dogs prefer harder things, and some dogs prefer things they can compress. One of those puppy sampler packs might be a good one to start with, and then after a couple of weeks take a look at which ones are getting the most wear. Hope that helps!

Hi, i would be really thankful if you would ever consider doing video on how to cope with dog attacking. I am not fearful dog would attack me, rather the oposite, I have phobia developed by unfortubate experience, that my toy poodle will be attacked and harmed/killed. This prevents me from possible social experiences we could experience together

We got a 8 week old Great Pyr - he is too independent and he is not food driven, he likes to chew on stuff (mainly the wood frame of my living room) or a couple of wood sticks he found out in the yard. But, he is not consistent with that either, he goes from toys to wood sticks to soft chew toys back to walls. And when we get him distracted from the wall by us acting like fools jumping and making noises, he runs toward us, lays down in front of us barely biting the chew toy we have but mostly aiming at our arms/legs. I’m afraid he believes we are the chew toys. Will see if this works and keep people posted

I'm so glad I've ran into your channel! The gates of heaven have opened! Learning never felt so thrilling, engaging and fun! Subscribed!!! 😄 However, do you possibly have any tips/video about dogs nipping on body parts (ankles, feet, hands, basically parts they can reach)? We have a 4 mos old German Shepherd and it's getting a little out of control especially most of the time she refuses to let go once she bites; thus leaving marks and scared household members.. 😓

Update: Mom who's diabetic gets bitten to bleeding because of dog's continuous latching :( She gets pretty scary when she gets wild with her bites ; it's unstoppable, & although not aggressively the latching makes it hurt so much. Tried saying No, redirecting with toy or food; praising when she does (happens only once in a while) and walking away but she just follows and bites again and again.

How much dog-dog play does she get? The more of that there is, the better biting gets. It's how Mother Nature designed it to work. Check out this article and see if it helps you a little: www.dogstardaily.com/puppy-biting All the methods you mentioned are providing no data about HOW she's supposed to use her mouth, and that's the most important lesson a puppy can learn! We've got a video on this in the queue, but it won't be out in time to really help you. So definitely research "Acquired Bite Inhibition." That's where you need to focus. Good luck!
