Hi guys. I was the one assisting Iain with the drill at my Dojo in Chelmsford, Essex. I must say the young girl caught my eye as Iain was explaining the drill to everyone. Took me by suprise! Hope you enjoyed the video. Paul Newman - Kernow Karate

Great drill. And I see it was like 6 years ago, but I wanted to offer an observation. Abernathy Sensei was getting a much larger imbalance/reaction from you with the nukite at the end of each sequence than you were getting from him. I believe it's because he was being very deliberate about keeping that technique aligned with his shoulder as he stepped through and not letting his body get ahead of his arm. Thanks for sharing the video, it's a really nice drill.

@deathlaugh87 Yeah I've just spotted that ... the child at the window could have looked quite spooky with the right lighting seeing it was the day before Halloween ;-)

Great video buy the way. I was just wondering if anyone could give some advice, when I've gone for an attempt of this technique in a live setting, I keep failing because the opponent retracts their arm before I can secure it, and it seems that no matter how fast I move I can't seem to get it . Is this down to me or is it a limitation of the technique itself?

My guess is you are trying it in distance sparring and not close-range drills?

I believe to see that the strike in this drill is done with a final stance closer to zenkotsu dachi than kokutsu dachi. So why shuto uke is done in kata with a kokutsu dachi stance, and not with a zenkotsu dachi stance?
@practicalkatabunkai2 жыл бұрын
That’s the following nukite which is done in Zenkutsu dachi. I hope that clarifies.

Here is what i understand. "There is no stance in karate." (said an other video of this channel). It means that the stances are only the images of the transfer of bodyweight through the movement. So I think maybe kokutsu dachi means that it is important to use his own weight downwards at least in the first part of shuto uke.

Hi Iain! Do you teach these drills to kids? How young do you start teaching them these practical applications? Thank you in advance.

Nice! They're striking with their forearms, not Shuto, though...I suppose it'd be as effective, if not more...

Oss Grandmaster. Thank you for your unsolicited guidance. As an alternate solution to your limited attention span, please feel free not to watch any of my videos. As I understand KZbin, they won’t force you to watch things you don’t want to watch. Avoid clicking “play” and you should be fine :-)
