** Important **
In the tutorial, the green block I place next to the bottom hopper at 9:08 has to be non-solid (glass or half slab) so that the bottom hopper is never powered. If you're having problems this is likely the solution.
This is a fast, tiny, cheap, and reliable multi item sorter. The overhead filter mechanic was originally developed by Shildifreak back in May, 2017. It's a significant improvement over other designs that typically top out at 12 rtx input speed with over 100 blocks build volume.
Features:
- Completely silent
- Fast, 8 redstone tick input speed
- Tiny, two wide tileable design (6x7x2 for an 84 block volume)
- Up to 54 filterable items per module
- No slot reservation in output chests

when placing these systems side by side, the sorting no longer works. First item is filtered through and the rest falls through the system previous to it. noticed when placing side by side, the subtracted comparators are being powered by both sides - how could this be fixed?
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
@@tomrowe7472 They actually do work when placed directly next to each other. The subtracted comparators do not interfere because they are constantly subtracting a static value of 1, so the fact that they bleed across modules doesn't matter. Also, the pulse they receive from the observer is too quick for them to register so it doesn't interfere either. The non-interference of that circuit crossing is what makes this system so small and elegant and I'm confident it is tileable, so the problem is likely somewhere else. Double check that you've applied the fix listed in the description. Also, make sure you have the input clock set up correctly. If that's all good, check the comments because we've been able to solve many problems that people have had and one of them might be the same as yours. Beyond that I'd need a little more information to trouble shoot your issue.

@@louisstammers4793 I'm not sure how the levels in a composter work; the video said adding a cake will set the composter to level 1, so I was joking when I suggested Bob Soong add a cake to his list of required items. I know a lot of things will increase a composter's level, but I think most items there's some random chance involved. The Minecraft wiki says things like "Wheat seeds have a 15% chance of increase the composter one level". You could add something to each composter and check it's level from the f3 screen if you're on windows playing Java. But a cake would be easier since a cake is 100% guaranteed to increase the composter level by exactly 1

@metamilo

@@DrVolz Ok, 3 ideas. First, make sure you built the input clock (blue part) shown at 5:39. If you don't t have that and you're just feeding items in with a hopper that will 100% break the system. If that's not the problem then try increasing the delay on the input clock, it'll slow down the system, but doing so has helped a number of people, especially on servers. Finally, make sure you either wait for it to finish sorting or turn it off before leaving the area or logging out. Sometimes when the world reloads it may get out of sync if it was in the middle of sorting.

yea, level 2 compare works and so does level 1 subtract. Cauldrons are just for backwards compatability but it has other problems. Rain can change the fill level to 3 and it's a ticking tile entity so it adds more lag. I would suggest using composters instead if you can.

Double check the number of ticks on the bottom repeater, make sure it's set to 1. If it's more then it could let extra items out which would allow new items to be placed in the filter chest. You could also try putting more than one of each type of item you want to filter in the filter chest. That way it still reserves the slot even as it's processing the item and any mistimed items won't accidentally replace it.

Hey metamilo, I'm using your design on my server and I had to decrease the flow of items to stop the breaking. Even after decreasing a lot occasionally it still breaks. Would putting multiples in the sorting chest like cubfan did in his video remedy this?
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
possibly, it would prevent it from breaking immediately but if it is dropping some out then eventually those will deplete as well. You could always add a comparator and a lamp to warn you when they start getting low. This problem typically occurs when you feed items in too fast, but you said you slowed things down so it's probably an issue with lag and the way your server handles that. If that's the case then there's not much that can be done unfortunately.

this is a timing issue, if you're losing the filter block to the output then the part that fires the bottom dropper is probably firing too early. This could be due to many things, an error in the build, lag(on bedrock), or using a non vanilla client/server. Double check the build then let me know what server and game type you have. You can also ask on the discord, it's easier to troubleshoot that way.

Hi metamilo, I know this is an older version and all, but, would it be possible to create a version where there would be a maximum of 2 blocks above the "item chest" (the one that you can get the items from) so that most of it is under ground. I tend to go for 4-5 block high builds before adding the roofs, so systems like these where everything is above the chest is unusable to me. Note; I don't mind if it is a bit more primitive, no shulker box loaders/unloaders and no indicator lights is perfectly fine as well. I really like this kind of design, but they all seem to go way above the sorted chest and to add a bunch of item elevators to make it viable would defeat the purpose of it, in my opinion.
@metamilo
@metamilo 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I understand where you're coming from, it's bothersome to have so much of the redstone sticking up above the build, it makes fitting it into your base very challenging. The problem is that anything involving hoppers naturally trends downwards because there's no way for them to flow up. Short of adding an elevator at the end I don't see an easy way of adjusting this design to fit your needs. Perhaps with a complete redesign you could work a couple droppers into the machine so the items don't lose height, but doing so will likely increase the size by a significant amount.

Hi! I've built your design on the server where I play, which is supposed to be pretty much vanilla, especially as far as redstone goes. It doesn't work at all. Not saying it's your design's fault, because it's absolutely awesome and I've tried it in singleplayer and it's fantastic and I love it. But I was wondering if you had any advice. I did use a slab instead of a solid block like you said, and the problem isn't that items are coming too fast, because even just dropping one item in breaks it. Sometimes, the items in the sorting hopper start emptying, even the 22 sorting items. Sometimes, the item gets added to the top chest and I then have more and more "sorting" items until a stack is reached of that particular item. Sometimes an item that shouldn't get sorted gets put in the bottom chest. This is probably not enough info for you to figure out my issue, but I thought I might as well try. Thanks anyway, and again, awesome design! Ps: the server is running 1.15.2 and using something to disable 0ticking farms, I was thinking the problem may be related to that, since it's the only thing that's not vanilla redstone-wise, but I don't see how that's possible... or maybe i've made a rookie mistake somewhere that I somehow didn't notice after rebuilding the sorter twice! Either way, any advice is very welcome!!! Cheers
@metamilo
@metamilo 4 жыл бұрын
So, you can check what kind of server you're on using the F3 menu. If it says Spigot, Bukkit, Forge, or Paper, those all have basically recoded how a lot of the vanilla redstone stuff works. There's a decent chance that if your running one of them it may be causing problems. If it says Fabric then you should be fine. It's really strange that it keeps adding things to the top. My guess there is that the top part isn't delivering the off pulse to let a filter item out. Maybe watch it to see if that redstone line along the top pulses when an item comes in. If that's working then double check to make sure that filter hopper isn't getting powered by something else.

@@hexa2502 Basically I had to slow down the dropper line. On Bedrock the update order of the droppers is not always the same, so powering them all on the same tick doesn't work. So I added one additional tick of delay for the third dropper (the repeater near the bottom of the machine), and two additional ticks of delay to the fifth dropper (the repeater at the top of the machine) - this unfortunately means that dropper five gets powered twice, making it click, and possibly limiting the speed of the system... Then I had to change the hopper-locking at the bottom of the machine, because I couldn't get the timings right. So instead of using an observer to pulse the hopper at the bottom of the machine at just the right time, instead I have a two-observer chain observing that powered rail at the bottom of the machine (one backward, one downward), and powering a redstone torch inverter - so the hopper is actually locked most of the time, but it unlocks briefly a couple ticks *after* the first dropper gets pulsed. Finally, I had to slow down the clock that feeds the system. The clock shown in the video (5:43) uses three ticks of repeater delay - one repeater on two ticks and one on one tick. The fastest I've gotten my build to work is with five ticks of repeater delay (one repeater on four ticks, the other on one tick). And to get it to work at that speed, I needed multiples of the "items of interest" in the filter chest - at least two of each. Sometimes the first cycle will pull item A out of the chest, and then the second cycle will start slightly before that item is put back, and try to pull another of item A - need to have two for that case and to make sure that the machine doesn't wind up putting another item into the chest in its place. And so far I've only tested a single slice. Obviously that's a big limitation in my achievement. I may have to slow the clock further in order to get it to work with multiple, tiled slices, I'm not sure. Also, on Bedrock, observers observing redstone dust will pulse when you load the area or reload the world - so if you were operating the machine and quit the game and restarted, or left the area and came back, it would pulse the bottom four droppers again and possibly cause an item to get stuck in the dropper line, which would mess things up. So, best not to do that. :) I hope this helps... scope-eye.net/misc/20200522-multi_item_sorter_1.jpeg scope-eye.net/misc/20200522-multi_item_sorter_2.jpeg

But what I've found is that when the modules are spaced one block apart, this doesn't happen and the system works perfectly. My system is designed so that 6 modules are spaced one block apart, 4 directly next to each other, a space, then another 4, the 6 more modules with spacing, in a U shape.items going through that middle 4-4 area are affected by this issue.

IVe built the system and when I throw a few items in it works fine, but when I have a shoulder unloaded emptying into it everything goes into the first module, any advice?

Make sure you are passing the items through an input clock that slows them down. The system works at half hopper speed, so if you feed them in with a hopper directly it will break because it's getting items too fast. I show the input clock I used at 5:38

Even better question, I think I may have already asked but does this work on bedrock? (I play on an Xbox)

Not really the way it's shown in this video, however a few people have successfully adapted it for bedrock. If you scroll through the comments you can find links to those videos.

@metamilo Does this work in 1.16.2? Ive tried placing replacing the solid block with a transparent block and it still doesnt work. Ive also tried switching the redstone on the block to the plus and the dot. Lastly ive tried making the clock longer to see if it helps. Really sad its not working for me :(

I haven't tested it in 1.16.2, but it is working for me in 1.16 and 1.16.1.

metamilo I downloaded your partners world and I saw that the comparator you changed to subtract mode wasn’t changed. Is that a mistake In the world or did you make the mistake. Thanks so much for the response!

@@oweng2295 Neither. I used 1 fill level and subtract mode whereas he used 2 fill levels and compare mode. Both options are logically identical in this use case.

I wanted this to run at hopper speed. Currently it only runs at half hopper speed. To remedy this problem, I built 2 identical sorters and divided the input between them.

Question, I feel like I've got this setup correctly... I think but the hopper just below the filter chest for whatever reason isn't locking any ideas?
