What I can't figure out about Nintendo is how they can be so blind to the success of Melee and the potential of a Melee 2. I know they make good money on their "family party games" strategy, but how can they not see Melee enthusiasts putting on multiple tournaments twenty years later as an opportunity? Hire the Project M guys, make a hardcore Melee 2, invest in the tournament scene like Capcom, rake in the money for another two decades. I don't get it.

One thing which I think really sets Smash apart from traditional fighting games like Street Fighter is the movement. Especially in Melee, there are so many different options for grounded movement, leading to a wide variety of approaches. Also, the aerial game in Smash is simply on an entirely different level than the air game of Street Fighter. Aerial momentum mixups and platform mobility are two things that I always enjoy watching in Melee and Smash 4. Take Smash 4 Mewtwo, for example: he's very floaty, with a high second jump and an airdodge that makes him disappear, allowing you to confuse your opponent on where you'll end up after the airdodge. He also can edge cancel the end of his teleport, so you can get really creative with your platform movement on Battlefield.

I set up the stale move queue, then find a good starting position (visually; i want something simple and easy to adjust if I'm slightly off), then walk through the video frame by frame to figure out who did what moves when. Once that's done, I stop the replay at various points to see what the players could have done differently.

Big doubt that either player was thinking about any of this. They just made the plays they made in that particular scenario.
@Roamstrong5 жыл бұрын
I doubt they're thinking it out in a cognitive voice-in-head way, BUT when placed into these scenarios, there are feelings of "general correctness" for a line of play that they feel and then act on. At the simplest level, when you see a yellow light turning red while driving, you get the urge to either stop or gun it. You don't go "well, based on this friction coefficient and my tire wear in this exact scenario, I will accelerate 0.25 seconds. If a cop is there at 0.3 seconds then ..." etc etc. No. Instead you get a general feeling based on repetition whether you can make that specific light or not. This dichotomy and interplay between logical assessment (whereupon a person can take a near-infinite amount of time to analyze and determine theoretical outcomes) vs masterclass habit (knowing the "right" thing to do in any given scenario of your craft) is what makes reaction-time-focused sports so appealing. These pro-level players have such habitual depth that these lines of play were feasible - both the play and counterplay. And that drama of play/counterplay is fucking exciting as hell.
@tobyvision5 жыл бұрын
When you play a game like this long enough at this level, you have ready made scripts in your head. For me, I can kind of feel the right path arising in front of me depending on what my opponent is doing. But it is not fully conscious thought. It's a mixture of muscle memory, instinct, and thought. There are even weirder scenarios in the kinds of fighting games that allow "option selects" like Street Fighter. Players can input more than one action at the same time, and the game will give the more favorable outcome. So they are responding to their opponent in two ways at once. It gets really weird if you break it down.
