Real IMC, Nice! Also it's nice to have someone with you to talk it through the procedures.

love ifr videos -- one note , and is that on the last approach you cancelled IFR once you had the runway made .. and shortly after that the GPS announced 500. -- so you broke out and made the airport some place above 500 and probably below 1000 AGL. in that circumstance I would not cancel IFR.. i'd keep the clearance, just in case for some reason you have to go around. -- with the deck being below pattern altitude you're going to have a shitty time flying a go around if youare VFR .. which you are now that you cancelled your clearance. keep the clearance until you are on the ground if the deck is at or below pattern imo. Iknow this video is 2 yrs old .. but there are some folks who are working on their IFR that might read these comments and might benefit.

That's a great point, I had not thought about it. I think that it's probably just hard-wired behavior from flying into my home airport. but not canceling until you have a traffic pattern made is a great idea.

ATC at Potomac is in general very very good. They always talk clearly, in full words, without going exceedingly fast

This is the best with having your own plane. Find a "good" IFR day and do one approach after another. Especially if you can go from VFR to a marine layer that's 0/0. Fly the approach to minimums and do the missed in actual. Commercial can't even attempt it and most instructors won't go either.

What's the purpose of the low flight over the runway? Is it for practice? Or to use as a reference for your next manoeuvre?
@bdanza Жыл бұрын
Just as practice
@justsmy56772 жыл бұрын
Do you ever get queried, by controllers, as to whether you are “going missed approach” versus “executing climbout”? Thanks
@bdanza2 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I understand the question...
@justsmy56772 жыл бұрын
@@bdanza Climbout instructions/procedures and Missed Approach are two different procedures. It is my understanding, and I could be wrong, that in layman’s terms; Missed Approach instructions are charted and documented on the approach plate and the controller expects you to fly them if you ACTUALLY go missed approach due to not breaking out of the weather at Decision Height/ MDA or in time to make a safe landing. Climbout instructions are ATC clearances normally coordinated in advance and given when doing practice instrument approaches and the Climbout headings/altitudes are (designed to keep you clear of terrain, etc.) more convenient for you to fly based on your next destination/approach (Missed Approach is often something like climb, hold, contact ATC, anticipate shooting another approach at same field). I was just wondering if the ATC controllers in your area were picky about using the two terms in different situations based on actually not breaking out of the wx (with intention of full stopping) versus doing practice approaches. I’m not trying to be a jack@ss, was just curious. Thanks😎
@bdanza2 жыл бұрын
I'm still not sure I follow. In the real world you rarely fly the published missed approach, most of the time controllers and pilots fly more pragmatic flight paths. This video was real IMC, not practice, and I don't think I flew any published missed. Does make sense?
