@nadvic17975 жыл бұрын
That's actually a highly philosophical question though. If everyone is super, that indeed means that noone would be any better than the other. But doesn't that also mean that everyone is perfect that way? Not really perfect, but if you'd see it on a scale, everyone would be the best. Sadly, this would also include that everyone had to be just as super as the other, which would mean that everyone would need to come to the same accumulated worthyness everyone else also has. So if you still look at different aspects of life, you'd still get a high difference on a scale regarding only that aspect, which would make them less comparable again. So everyone would have to be exactly the same. Btw, this is basically the quintessence if the video. You shouldn't come up with any other ideas, and only blindly follow the guidance of the guy in the video, who basically told you: self esteem is nothing else than working hard towards your goal and then reaching it. And if you live in any other way, you shouldn't have self esteem and should hate yourself. And as i'd like to put it: that's total bs ...

@@Iliadic I can somewhat agree, but even people with learning disabilities shouldn't be praised for no reason. You can always compliment someone's ability, we even congratulate small children that learn how to do something as simple as speak a first word, or walk, or go to the potty themselves. Even though those are such simple actions, it's the fact that they did something rather than just being congratulated for being alive and "special". It's ok as a parent for you to tell your kid that you like them because they are smart, funny, etc. but in an environment like school, where teachers have much less time to get to know each student, it doesn't fill any gaps to do something as superficial as telling a kid "you're special" or "you're so smart" when you can instead talk about the good work that they have done which will build up their confidence constructively. And I say constructively, because if you develop a skill, you have that tangible skill. If someone compliments you on something that isn't quite so stable, like personality, what will you think about yourself if you're bullied and you act differently from what people expect or experience trauma that affects your mental ability?

@jeremymatelo72224 жыл бұрын
I mean, it's probably because that's not the idea self-esteem is made from. Since self-esteem is not a defined term, we have leeway with how it can be interpreted. He brings up how too high of confidence causes people to not feel as if they need to train to get better and that's true but that's why we don't consider self-esteem confidence. Self-esteem normally is talking about a state of mind that's more complicated than just a feeling. Normally when someone is considered to have low self-esteem, they don't have the will to try while people with high self-esteem are willing to try and fail and keep going until they see results. Self esteem is a mixture of emotions: confidence, resilience, and positive thoughts on ones self (or I guess what could be considered "self admiration"). Since Self-esteem does not have a text book definition, it can be interpreted differently. This is just my interpretation

I remember being treated like this... I remember plenty of points in my school life where this had occurred and honestly it just weirded me out. I remember back in Elementary we had a pole casting contest, you know for fishing? With targets and all... and it came down to me and a girl who I knew in my own class. We both were doing the longest cast but also had to make sure we hit the targets right in the middle. I was given an easier time myself since I was and am autistic. So I got to go up closer to the targets and of course I won. Which made me happy. After all I got a little medal and as a kid. Getting some sweet metal that looks nice is of course gonna make you excited. But then I saw that the girl next to me also scored. Pretty much just right behind me. Which was cool. But she also got a little medal. In fact. I saw the whole class get medals. It made me feel weird. Looking back on it. I wish I didn’t have an easier time for one. Simply because I personally have autism. Especially since I don’t have it nearly as bad as others... and two the person rewarded should have been the girl. Maybe I could have gotten 2nd if we had the classic 1, 2, 3.... but of course we didn’t and if we did. We all would of course have also had “participation” rewards. It’s fine and especially fun when schools and teachers give out positive reinforcement. But it’s just demeaning and stupid to reward things not deserving of it. It always made me feel weird and stupid. Especially STUPID! Nothing makes me feel more like I’m the dumbest person alive then when people go easy on me and treat me and others like that. It feels like one of those classic Lab Rat tests. Go to the end of the maze and you get Cheese! Which funnily enough is even more better then how we are treated. At least the said Rat actually did something to earn it. Meanwhile we’re sitting here with this bs.

I think the baby boom generation started this whole self esteem movement as a legitimate backlash against at least some actual, (and some perceived too,) abuse that they did experience growing up. I think a lot of older people felt like their lives turned out crappy (the ones whose lives did turn out crappy for whatever reason) because their parents and teachers were to hard on them, made them feel worthless, or didn't tell them they loved them enough, or something. Even if that may not be the real reason, they felt it was. So they vowed to not do that to their kids. The problem is, they took it to far in the opposite direction.

When life becomes easier it tends to breed softer/lazier people. Things have only gotten easier in the past 60 years and now you have a generation who doesn't want to do physical labor, or really work for anything because everything has been handed to them their entire lives. Even poor people nowadays have it easy compared to generations past. They get money for being poor, food etc. "Poor people are fat nowadays, think about that shit." Joe Rogan. I'm not here to argue about why someone is poor but I guarantee you live like a king being poor today compared to in the 30's and 40's. Man let me tell you, you have NO IDEA how accurate this is in Norway. Teens these days are insanely self-centered and walk around with no accomplishments and dream all day about things they will do and get famous for... No really, teens here are "dreamwalkers" - which describes how they act and think, "self-esteem" does play a role into this issue, but it's not the sole cause of the problem. ... No idea about America though :/ edit: 3 Years later I get reminded of my comment here, which is funny, because about 1-2 years after I posted this comment, I changed my mind. I'll leave my bad take of a comment up, if anyone wishes to keep their replies to me. But note that what I said originally isn't something I stand by anymore. Teenagers today aren't any different to how we were as teenagers back in the day. They honestly have enough crap to deal with in their lives, only to then get unfairly stereotyped by *some* older people (who think they were better).

I feel like you’re describing an extreme case of self-esteem. When I think of self-esteem personally I think that it gives people confidence to be themselves. People being themselves could be someone who’s super nice and hardworking. I’ve never really seen people define self-esteem as acting narcissistic. There could be people who take it like that. I think this video is describing those people with "very high self-esteem". For me self-esteem is about how you "esteem" yourself or how you see yourself. If you have a low self-esteem you see yourself so poorly or in a negative way which can sometimes be not also true (like in cases of people with depression when they "see" themselves as totally helpless or not capable of doing something better when more often it is not true). On the other hand those with "high self-esteem" are the ones who see themselves as almost perfect & love themselves too much. Therefore we need to have just a healthy kind of self-esteem where you don't think of yourself too highly that you are beyond reproach, but at the same time don't think of yourself too lowly than who you truly are otherwise you might end up hating yourself, always depressed or even suicidal

Self-esteem should be about telling youth that they are CAPABLE and that they can achieve anything that they WORK HARD in, and that they should be confident in their decisions in life, that they are not fundamentally worse than anyone else and have the ability to achieve. It should be about encouraging young people to pursue their goals. It is not, however, teaching kids to think they are "special" like the SJWs do, that just fosters narcissism.

"Stop caring about whether you're a good or bad person" - Prager University Seriously though, this video is taking the postmodernist-inspired concept of self-esteem, as a self-judgement not based on any objective facts about oneself, as a substitute for the actual phenomenom of self-judgement. Which is a real thing, and should be. You Should judge yourself as fundamentally good or bad so as to know if you are moral and ethical or not - otherwise, how would you know? Besides, it's kind of an inescapable judgement that is being passed emotionally wether anyone wants to or not. Denying those feelings wont help anyone. Real self-esteem (in the word's original meaning) is based on reason, as in knowing reasons for ones self worth. Read "the psychology of self esteem" by nathaniel branden. This phenomenon of fake self esteem is mentioned in the book as "pseudo self esteem" because it's not based on objective facts or objective value judgements.

I was bullied as a kid and a few parents and teachers called me a useless troublemaker, but i had bad self esteem even before that, i remember when i was just in kindergarten my brothers and mums friends called me cute in like a baby way, obviously they were all girls that said this. But i hated people complimenting me, hated people calling me cute. Its carried on till now a 15 year old who his parents kicked him out for bad behaiviour, failing school, no girlfriend, and all friends are stoners, junkies, vandilists etc. I hate myself, I always have. I think we need to be taught to be at least slightly confident, not by our school or anything but confidence is key in everything. Los self esteem holds you back much more than high self esteem trust me. When your insecure you feel you cant do anything right anyway so you never take the opertunity. Though I agree with the overarching message of bettering yourself, the whole basis of the argument is off. Self esteem is not the sort of baseless arrogance he is describing; it is literally defined as "confidence in one's own worth of abilities; self respect." Self esteem isn't about ego and thinking you deserve a prize for breathing. It is about respecting yourself, treating yourself with dignity, and having faith in the abilities you have.
@fastcarsaremylife4 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is one of the worst videos I've seen from PragerU. The product of this sort of thinking, is shutting of a lot of your emotional life. That's not good, and does not lead to a happy life. It leads you perhaps to a stable, productive life, but you'll feel hollow. Some people, like the one speaking, perhaps think of that as an ultimate goal and and even smaller part of those people might even enjoy it, but for the general population, this is not a good idea. Self-doubt is real, and self-esteem is indeed a good thing. Narcissism is of course not, but self-esteem does not equal narcissism. Narcissism is when you think your faultless. Having self-esteem does not mean you're faultless. You can think "hey, I'm doing pretty good [even just for breathing]" and still thinking "I want to improve this". It's about being able to receive criticism in a positive manner where it gives you positive energy to go on, instead of ignoring the input. "Hey, this guy said I should do better at this. Huh, that's true, I should."

I know I'm late but i feel I should debate on this. Well, I believe his arguments about the difference of self-esteem and confidence leads to the interpretation of the fact that faith in your abilities, respect for yourself and treating yourself with dignity are not rights you aquire from breathing but by exercising virtues in a constantly basis. In another words, you should earn it, deserve it, through your actions, and not because you esteem yourself but because you're confident in who you are because of what you do.

I always viewed self-esteem as that thing that stops you from demeaning yourself by doing things that make you appear desperate, fragile, or needy. So if you try to make plans with a woman, and she doesn't get back to you, self esteem would be that thing that stops you from contacting her again when she's clearly not interested. Or when she breaks up with you, self-esteem, is that thing that stops you from begging her to take you back. Or if you get yelled at by your boss, self esteem is that thing that stops you from sitting in a corner and crying about it.

I first watched this video before I knew who Matt Walsh is. Looking back at it now, I wanna say that he's yet another example of how men always look our best in our thirties and beyond, so long as we take care of ourselves. In our younger years, no matter how well-kept, muscular, well-postured, or confident we are, we just look inexperienced and lower in rank. However, as we age and appear more masculine, we have more authority in society, making us more attractive on that front too. Basically, when we're too young, it shows.

@@joshlexcelius2573 Let me give you my two cents as a piano teacher in China, where LOTS of parents force their children to learn musical instruments from a young age (as young as 3). Some children are simply good (talented), easy to pick up, have better musical sense (inherent) while others aren't. And get this, children are more likely to like playing the piano if they're good (talented) at it, since they could actually enjoy the music rather than treating it as a chore. So to sum up, just because u're interested in something doesn't mean you're talented in it, but having talent in something can definitely boost your interest to it.

So this is equating self-esteem with arrogance when self-esteem is used more when saying to be proud of what you've been able to do, the successes you've had. It's linked to confidence yes, but it has more to do with being able to be happy with what you've been able to do already. It's about being happy with your good parts while still knowing you can be better in the future. What it is not is narcissism as a lot of things people say are aren't really. It is also not arrogance as that is an extreme pride which would only link it to extremely high self-esteem.

Giving the definition of "Esteem" is different than giving the definition of "Self-Esteem". It's deliberately misconstruing words. Believe it or not, words do not have literal interpretations. "Self-Esteem" is to be confident in your own abilities, not to admire yourself. To have high self-esteem is not a cocky sense of self, it's a quiet acknowledgement that you can do great things if you try hard enough. You can push yourself higher and higher if you have higher self-esteem. To not have high self-esteem is to be unconfident in your abilities, to be critical of yourself in a most unhelpful way. To focus on your failings, to go limp at the first sign of struggle. Once again, believe it or not, analyzing your abilities based on a negative light is severely detrimental to your mental health. You don't improve better by being negative. You improve by acknowledging it's hard, and smiling widely because you could improve. THAT'S self-esteem. THAT'S what EVERYONE is in favor of. Everyone agrees that self-esteem is important. Some people are dipshits that will try to mutilate words into what they don't mean. Have high self-esteem.

Confidence has to be earned. Self esteem on the other hand can be defined as unearned self esteem.A great video!

I remember the first time I realized the concept that confidence is earned. It totally helped me reinforce the moment when I decided that I'm not simply going to just tell kids to be confident or to just believe in yourself. Like, it makes zero sense to tell a child to be confident in something that they're not good at. Nor to just believe in themself without something of substance to support them. It's better to tell them to work towards that belief and confidence. I know that I learned that when I started game playing with nerves. But as I went along, the nerves didn't hold me back anymore. I started to loosen up and was tuned in. I worked towards it without realizing it. That's how I can certainly agree that confidence is earned.

This is great. I’m so glad I found this. I’m sick of this high self-esteem crap. Self esteem doesn’t exist. I blame some of my breakups on my partners having strong “self-esteems”. This stuff is making all of American society borderline narcissistic.

Kids are born in sin but if they pray really hard and repent their sins they might escape the hellfire. God is allmighty and man is a despicable little worm who can't do anything if God doesn't will it.

I agree that confidence should be earned and that we are not all special. But it's extremely important to establish that a high self-esteem (or narcissism, according to you) is proven to greatly lower anxiety and depression.

This is a fair point, but as a person who has struggled with low self esteem for a long time... well. It's not exactly easy or really enough to just 'stop thinking about it'. When you hate yourself so much and you can't get away from your own mind screaming at you that you're worthless no matter how much you do for other people and how much you push yourself, you cant just stop thinking about it. It's taken me so long to just... be ok with me. Not say that, I think I'm great, and amazing and special, no... Just... I'm ok. I don't need to hate myself. I can be happy with my achievements. But that isn't achieved through not thinking about it. That's achieved through a lot of pushing by myself and my friends to interrupt my thoughts of hatred towards myself, and turn them positive or neutral. This is a good video and a good point, I just don't think telling people to just 'not think about it' is the right answer to low self esteem.

Pretty much the reason why I hate myself too much is because I've always been showered with praises and I really though I was special or had extraordinary talent. That's what they told me but whenever I encounter someone who is far better at me at something, I lose interest in truly pursuing and doing that "thing" and also feel very inferior. I hate it when I can't be at the top of things or can't be at control. The endless praises made me so confident that I grew complacent at almost everything. I blamed my parents for raising me like this but now I realised that I can't change the way my parents raised me.

Self-esteem is the belief that you have the ability to learn and get better. Somebody with low self-esteem isn't going to strive to be better because they see themselves as a total failure incapable of improvement or success; it goes hand-in-hand with depression. If you have high self-esteem, you believe that you can be successful if you put in the HARD WORK and PRACTICE and that you are capable of growth. It's not about being awarded for breathing, it's about realizing you as a person have the power to become who you want to be if you put in the effort.

To many young people today consider themselves whole. No need for God to fill that gaping hole in their soul. Mark 2:17 KJV When Jesus heard it , he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

I have hated myself since I was like 12, telling me I was special never helped, what helped me was finding out why i hated myself, I was a mess, still am in fact, but working on myself gave me a purpuse and less time to be depressed

Esteem: Respect or admiration, typically for a person. Self-Esteem: Confidence in one's own worth or abilities. Hmm.

Thank you for this. I've struggled with confidence for so long. I've been arguing with myself that I feel proud of myself, that I need to love myself, while at the same time I'm good at not a lot of things, and that last part made me feel so bad. I kept denying it. What you've said in this video is legitimately motivating, and motivation is something I haven't felt in a while. I can feel proud of myself if I actually practice to build my confidence... I think I may be dumb for not realizing this sooner, but I'm glad I learned it somehow

This is not how words work. Self-esteem does not equal self + esteem. For instance, a Banana-hammock is not a hammock for bananas.

Meanwhile, there's a growing movement in parts of China to make their education system more like ours in the US, so their children will feel better about themselves (self-esteem, anyone?) and won't feel so much pressure from a system that works them hours each day with no thought to their emotional or psychological well-being. I don't love either education system (US vs China), but I think it's interesting how each wants to be more like the other.

He will never realize that being a public figure in a high office will lead to his every letter being taken literally and weighed on gold scales. Oblivious or unconcerned as to how it might be received/interpreted. If your knowledge of a subject or facts is lacking going public about it won't lead to you improving your standing and reputation. Better be quiet than to remove all doubts to you being perceived as a fool by opening your mouth on issues you don't understand.
