Come along while I harvest potatoes grown in very large containers.
I grow flowers and vegetables in Saskatchewan, Canada. My cold hardiness zone is zone 3b. I have an average of 110 frost free growing days each year. The past few years have seen our temperatures go as low as -37C (-34.6F) to as high as 37C (98.6F). Come see what and how I grow in these conditions.

Nice harvest! My Red Norlands were in the ground here in Nova Scotia in late April. They grew and we ate them new as the plants matured. All gone now, but we have late varieties like russet in storage. I feel my containers are too small but I’m too cheap to buy new ones LOL. I thought my climbing beans and cucumbers were fine for the summer but I actually found a few morsels on the vines today! The season is not over!

Clean healthy spuds 😀 A tip for new gardeners that I found out myself some years ago. I had a very pretty large pot outside with a beautiful shrub in it. I wanted to pot it on to a larger one. Uh oh! I couldn't get it out because of the shape of the pot, it was slightly bellied out in the middle and the top of it was smaller. I just had to top dress it, the roots were fibrous and filled it completely. It died some years later, but I never plant a fibrous rooted plant in a pot that's even slightly narrower at the top.

Yes pots either this shape can be a real problem when it comes to removing well rooted plants. That is why most of my planters are wider at the top than bottom.

Howdy, Prairie Plantgirl! Really pretty potatoes!👍I enjoyed you taking us along for the harvest.😃 Where's your fur baby? We are still in the upper 90s here...I think Sunday we get a cool off. I'm so ready for fall! My fall tomatoes and peppers are producing well. I got to harvest a few banana peppers this week.😋 I got to bless 6 or 7 folks with sunflower arrangements in the last two weeks. I never imagined myself growing cut flowers! Thanks for inspiring me in so many ways! You are precious!💕

Poor Buster is getting older and spending less time trying to garden and more time snoozing in sunbeams. I’m so happy to hear of all the great things you’ve started to try and enjoy in your garden. I’m sure all the people you share your success with are loving it too!

Impressive potato harvest there. Nothing like freshly harvested potatoes for dinner. A little butter on top and I'm good to go! 😊. I do get scab on my potatoes occasionally. I try to avoid adding lime in the fall where potatoes are going to be planted in the spring. Do you add lime to your soil on a regular basis. In case you didn't know this, too much lime where potatoes grow causes scab. It's a hard balance to keep where we are due to more acidic soil. Thank you for sharing.

I only add lime for my brassicas. I try to keep a rotation that has my potatoes not following brassicas for this reason.

I only have these giant pots because the city auctioned them off for an incredible price. Large pots can be very expensive. You’ll notice most of my other vegetable growing pots are reused containers from nurseries or found containers. It is great to find those last few bits of produce still coming in the final days of summer.
