PRAISE V8 DIESEL!

The distinctive rumble of a Mack V8 has all but disappeared from Australian highways.
Matt Wood spent some time behind the wheel of two old bangers in South Australia to indulge in in some sooty E9 worship.

I have been a Bulldog Mack fanatic since I was a little boy I absolutely love Mack’s the 1960s-70s-80s where by far the best years for Mack I drove the tin nose DM 685 sx the 686 DM 886 dump trucks sx RD Tin nose 600 R models a 1964 Mack b81 tandem dump I plowed snow with for 3 days in the blizzard of 1996 here in the states NewJersey There is nothing like a Mechanical Mack truck

The E9 V8 might be a rare beast nowadays but the CAT 3408 V8 is even rarer!

gm16v149 might be rare but it will turn heads while it is still about. I hate the way modern trucks are heading with these modern low emission engines which sound like shit, blow no coal and are getting too complex. too much plastic and automatic gearboxes.

gm16v149 ~ I worked for Kwikasair Express in 1989 out of the Coode Road Depot in West Melbourne and at that time we had two subbies ~ regular Melbourne - Sydney runners both 3408 Caterpillar powered Cab Over Kenworths one was a flat roof K100 and the other an Aerodyne ~ two fine examples of days gone by in Overnight Transport !!!!!!!!!!

These E-9s have incredible power. I saw a Mack once loaded up with float and face shovel bucket along the Bruce Highway. It made a sweeping left turn up a gradual rise and did so without changing a gear. The driver was really good and the way he took the turn made it a bit easier on the engine

The old mechanical Mack's. Once started you could take out the ignition key. Lock the doors and walk away. To turn off the truck. You pushed in the stop lever. I miss those old Mack's.

Goday mate...I'm just a little sad you would have such a nice horse pulling material in a dump trailer.. Ummm Lets say I would expect a day cab to be on large job sites off road and certainly not with Alcoa Buds and shinny paintwork ..more like Dayton steel and faded paint ...But I guess whatever turns your Gajin pin .. {wrist pin} My pop owned a Super liner with a 60 series Detroit and hauled sand & gravel material out of Long inland with a 40 ft summit Dump trailer and a tag axle ..

In Australia you'll find older trucks like COE KWs that used to run overnight interstate routes and heaven knows how many ks or miles in US terms those trucks rack up. They take the turntable off, fit a tipper and put them on local construction sites. They get sold and a cashed up buyer usually gets them blinged up a bit with paint stainless etc I saw a W model in an auction yard one morning at Rocklea Brisbane an ex-fuel tanker with an 8V71 and the boss told me the Speedo had turned over 5 times and you know what that means. Mack have always been very popular in Aus heaps of B and R models which I loved as a kid
