Synopsis:
Pravrajika Divyanandaprana started off by outlining the current state of research into Happiness and the relevance of it in the larger context of society. She stressed that "happiness" was subjective and even though we cannot truly measure it, we can at the same time not deny it just because we cannot measure it.
She then explained how Yoga and Vedanta define happiness. She spoke about the different centres of consciousness spoken about in Yoga and the associated happiness with each of these centres and stressed that the happiness derived from sensory perceptions, even though existent, are at best short-lived. She also said we make the mistake of attributing happiness to the external object where as we merely superimpose the happiness within us to the objects outside which essentially acts as stimuli.
She spoke of the Panchakosha model and the Shad ripu model as discussed by Vedanta and Yoga respectively. She stressed that all the higher forms of happiness which are everlasting will become accessible through disciplined effort and meditation.
She touched upon the analysis in the Mandukya Upanishad regarding the states of Waking, Dream and Deep sleep to drive home the point that all of us, at the core of our beings, are the witness (Sakshi) experiencing these different states and thus are apart from them. She also stated that the source of all happiness is thus within ourselves and we need not search for it anywhere else.
She concluded by delving on Bhagawad Gita's analysis of Satvik, Rajasik and Tamasik Gunas and urged us to seek Satvik happiness which is a more steady and long lasting one.
In summary, she said that the current enquiry and our common perception of happiness is just the tip of the iceberg at the sensory and intellectual level and that there are vast territories which are explored in Yoga-Vedanta which we need to make an effort to explore in this day and age too.
The talk was followed by a question answer session through which the audience benefited.
