Hi Lucia, what a beautiful and heart warming video. Lorena very is beautiful! I just bought my first Calathea Jungle Velvet (Adriana) a few days ago. It is a mature plant, 1m tall during the day and 1m20 in the evening! And it has got 3 beautiful white flowers! It is a stunning pant! THANK YOU SO MUCH! This was such a good video, I just bought my calathea and I really don’t want it to die. What would you say is the best method to create humidity? Tray with pebbles and water, or humidifier (don’t know which one to go for).
@PlantsandLucia4 жыл бұрын
Andrea Chelsea Mauricio Amado hi! That’s a great question ☺️ I think it depends on how humid is the environment.. for example, the air where we live (especially in the winter) becomes more dry, as it gets colder outside and we have to turn on the heating system. Calatheas need lots of humidity, so I place them in a room with a humidifier (not super close to them - this may damage the leaves - but in the same room), but I’ve noticed that it is better to maintain humidity at the 50-60% at least in the winter.. so if you live in similar conditions, I’d recommend a humidifier.. in the summer I usually just mist the leaves and keep them out of direct sunlight, usually at lower light levels, and they thrive ☺️! Hope this is helpful!! And hope your calathea is doing well 💕

Hello Lucia, I just bought yesterday my Calathea, I found this plants really awesome and purifies the air.. And arriving her at home, I separated it first with washed knife because it was huge for my room. And used with Hydrangeas Soil and put a slow release fertilizer.. Later on, I wiped it her with a Damp cloth just to clean the big leaves because some soil was everywhere on the leaves and water them little bit with top water.. Then put them on the shady place where no direct sunlight.. But now they leaves are turning wilted and some others not.. I don't know what happen.. Maybe because of the temperature outside when I reported her, shocked, fertilizer or because of the top water. Or is there any alternative soil I can buy and I mustnt mix.. Please help.. Thank you in advance.. Sorry my English was not good enough😅

Very nice video! I just got my first Calathea, and am wondering how it will do in the winter when it is very cold. Will it survive the 10 F degrees and lower? Please advise! Thanks!
@PlantsandLucia4 жыл бұрын
Hi! The Calatheas are very particular about what they like and don't like.. I'd recommend you keep temperatures on the warmer side of the spectrum... however, in winted, since we need heating systems in our home, the air becomes drier so we need to bring our calatheas to a room with a humidifier (the air here in Berlin gets really dry in the winter)... that way we can increase humidity levels around them to about 60% This is important as they do not do well in dry air.. Hope this helps!

Omg!!!! Thank you. It was short, sweet, and to the point. My calathea has dying leaves and I truly don’t know how to care for her. This was beyond helpful and I’ll employ these tips and hopefully save her. Is an elephant ear considered tropical? Hii ♥️ thank you so much for your comment, I'm glad you like the video ☺️ the elephant ear plant is a tropical plant 🌿 the calatheas need lots of humidity in my experience, so you can also out these two close to a humidifier.. That can help them a lot ♥️! Let me know how it goes :)

Would you say they do better in smaller pots? Or a bigger pot with some room to grow?
@EddoPanamenyo Жыл бұрын
Hi, did you find an answer for this?
@Popedishsoap Жыл бұрын
Hey! Unfortunately my medallions all died of some sort of blight, but I have a Surprise Star (looks the same but is black/purple) that is thriving! I repotted it about a year ago in a custom soil mix (coco coir, chunks of orchid bark, a tiiiny bit of sea soil, tropical soil mix from my plant store, perlite + pumice, and worm castings), into a planter that's a little bit taller than a typical planter (i prefer clear ones to see the roots, and the ones at my local plant store are a little taller), and it's been thriving! It's roots are growing steadily but I haven't felt the need to replant it. I think it prefers to be more "snug" with the ability to grow a bit-- but not room like a monstera wants (i had repotted a monstera of mine into a pot 3" bigger (9in pot), and then a few months later my cat knocked it over and broke the pot, the only one available was an 11in pot, and suddenly within 3 leaves I had leaves triple the size and inner fenestrations!) But if you put a calathea in something with that much space, it will die (rip to my pinstripe calathea) Sorry for the ramble LMAO hope this helped in some way!
@EddoPanamenyo Жыл бұрын
@@Popedishsoap it does help, thank you so much. I hope my pinstripe doesnt die, i got it like 2 months ago as a baby and suddenly its 2 leaves started curling and like drying even watering it like every 3 days or something (it was in a small disposable cup with some holes). So i thought it was prob rotting or something so i took it out, cleaned its roots and put it in a glass of water with some fungicide but the roots looked healthy (just like 1 inch long tho). I bought black gold potting mix which has lots of perlite and some pine bark and used a 4inch pot. I had to cut its older leaf cuz it looked like it was going to die anyway but its still growing a new leaf and like one a baby growing from the soil. Now that you mention that too big of a pot could kill them Im really worried because i dont want to have to repot it again cuz that may kill it fr. Idk
@EddoPanamenyo Жыл бұрын
Forgot to mention that i also thought that it got its roots burnt with the fertilizer but none of the roots looked brown or black but im still scared of fertilizing it
@Popedishsoap Жыл бұрын
@@EddoPanamenyo if you repotted it in something 1-2 inches bigger you should be fine! Not sure what kind of lighting you have, but i have south/southeast facing windows and my calathea LOVES bright indirect/dappled sunlight!! In the winter it gets some direct sun too and it doesn't seem to mind! I have it under an alocasia polly i have to give it some more "shade" and to kind of mimic what kind of sun exposure it might get out in nature (if that makes sense?) I keep it in my bedroom as it's always a bit warmer in there and closer to my bathroom so it can get some humidity when i shower but don't have to move it! Unless you KNOW the pot is too big, try not to repot! Calatheas are SO dramatic and fussy, I lost all but 2 leaves on my surprise star from stress and the learning curve of finding the right watering schedule, and then it just kinda chilled for a few months, and now she's got 7 leaves (one huge one is coming in rn!) It's hard to explain, but make sure you keep the soil moist. For me, every 5-9 days depending on the season or if it's putting out a new leaf! Usually every week or so though. When you stick your finger in the soil, if the top inch is dry and the soil at the tip of your finger feels damp, you know you'll want to water it then (or maybe the next day if you think it might be too damp!) It's a weird and hard balance because you need to let the soil to dry out a bit to let the roots breathe, but they definitely don't want the soil to be as dry as, say, a snake plant/pilea/pothos. Basically as a v general rule of thumb, don't let the soil dry out to the "hydrophobic" point! I've also found more success with top watering, rather than bottom watering, so the soil stays consistently moist throughout! And MAKE SURE you use distilled water, aka fill up your watering can (or even just leave out a cup of water) and the next day/24ish hours later it's good to go!!! No need to buy distilled water, i just leave my watering can full all the time until i need it basically and my plants love it!

Hello Lucia! :) I just bought a calathea medallion online and I was trying to do some more research for its care before it arrives. Do you think the spray bottle/misting method would work okay without a humidifier? I tend to wipe down the leaves of my syngonium arrowhead plant and it seems to be responding kindly to that treatment.
@PlantsandLucia3 жыл бұрын
Hi! In my experience, high humidity is important for this one. However, if you don't live in a very dry place, wiping the leaves with water may help her thrive. In my case, Berlin gets drier in the winter as we have some heating vents in the house and this gets the air dry, in this case I use a humidifier for my plants (and especially my calatheas). What I'd recommend is to do your method and observe how she reacts, if she seems to be happy, then it works for you. If not, you can try increasing the humidity in other ways. I have a video on different ways to increase humidity for plants here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYDbmXWnqZ6lpbc I hope this is helpful!

Hiii! As long as it doesn't get direct sunlight, your calathea should be fine... .. I've only got like 22 Calatheas and 3 Maranta.. I mist them all (except my jungle velvet as she goes to the bathroom with mee when I shower) every day, on warm days I mist them twice (morning and evening sometimes using seaweed sometimes just clean water), on warm humid days (only during summer) I take them out on my garden table in the shade of the parasol.. I boil my tap water and run it through a paper coffee filter, cools it off and then it's ready for use, both for watering and misting.. I use a mix of neem oil, dish soap and Japanese peppermint oil to clean every single leaf by hand (and stems).. I mix my own soil using coco coir, orchid bark, perlite and worm casting.. Once every 3 month I give them all a flush clean.. I use Tripart fertilizer from February to October, then I use fish emulation and seaweed during winter.. And they are all as happy as can be 🌞🤗 all the rest of my plants (there's only about 100) have the very same treatment..

Hi! Thanks for this video. I just bought this plant because I thought it looked amazing, though now I am realizing that it's somewhat high maintenance. It's ok, I'm up for the challenge, but I do have a question. I bought a used pot to plant it in, as in it does not drain out of the bottom. I was advised to put an inch layer of rocks on the bottom of the pot to prevent the soil from sitting in the water. Is this ok? Thanks
@PlantsandLucia5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Congratulations on getting this beautiful calathea! Haha they are high maintenance yes but really worth it ☺️♥️ Yes! The layer of rocks at the bottom will provide drainage :) also based on my experience, I have discovered that some calatheas prefer water twice a week, so just check with yours as well (but make sure not to over water), so check the soil for sure and the layer of rocks at the bottom will help with that as well 👍 I hope this is useful! My calathea is showing a bit of crispness on the leaves and a little yellowing in the leaf itself, what’s happening please?
@PlantsandLucia3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Crispiness on the leaves is generally related to two possible reasons: 1. Water: What kind of water do you use? Tap water can have some minerals and chemicals that may not be the best for your calathea (they can be very sensitive to these chemicals). If you use tap water, I'd recommend changing it to rain water / distilled water / filtered water :) 2. Humidity: The calathea thrives in high humidity (50%-60%), so we really want to provide this for them. I'd recommend placing yours in a room with a humidifier just to make sure. You can also find a video on how to increase humidity for your plants here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aYDbmXWnqZ6lpbc Let me know if any of these two causes may be the reason for your plant to be like this. If not, we can discuss further and you can even send a picture on IG to find out what the problem may be together :)

Thanks a lot, finally a plant does not need “well draining cactus mix” it has a good shade, and i have cooling ac on mostly as i live in a warm country. So i am not able to provide moist. i will do my best for it and follow ur tips, let’s see how it will do!

@@purysimo yes ! Humidity is really important for the calathea, I’d recommend maybe getting a humidifier so she is happier :)

Hii! Thanks for your comment! You mean to clean the leaves?
@ellaineerfe62795 жыл бұрын
To wipe of dust and clean the leaves. Does it have any advantage over water? Thanks.

I just got one and it isn't doing so well. The bottom leaves are starting to brown/yellow. A few have completely died
@PlantsandLucia5 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm sorry to hear that 😔! I know, the calathea can be very moody for sure..! Browning/yellowing leaves are usually related to watering... You may be overwatering your calathea, or the water may be too hard for her... For example, here in Berlin the water has many salts and minerals and hence is too hard for my calathea.. I usually filter it before using it for my plant, you can also use rain water... Make sure to check the soil and let it dry in between waterings 💧☂️. Also I find the bottom watering method helps me to keep the soil moist but not wet or soggy.. You can find the video on how to do it here : kzbin.info/www/bejne/epCTc2aLf8x6nrc Let me know if this helps! Sending lots of positive energy to you and your calathea ♥️, Lucia

What kind of fertilizer do you use? Thanks for the video 😊
@PlantsandLucia5 жыл бұрын
Hii! I don't fertilize my calathea so much because they are sensitive.. But in the growing season I use a homemade fertilizer, that way I know exactly what I'm using for my plant 😊🌿 this is the video on how to make it kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYCYmHmebLx5nqc Hope this is helpful!

My new leaves are coming in pretty small, and older leaves are leggy. Any ideas?
