I played Baldurs Gate 2 decades ago. Seeing Minsc make a return is so nostalgic. Much better times back then. 😢😔

This indeed is in support of your theories. :) The Nauteloid "we" start on could be on the Absolute side, and a easy routine mission collecting potentials strong candidates to become TrueSouls, went sideways, due to unforeseen factors. Like Shadowhearts mission (that I think is the reason for Giths attacking and following the ship), or something else? As I see it, the Mind Flayer we see in the intro, and on the ship, acting a bit "odd" to the fact that several dragons are chasing the ship. Like attacking a city and abducting randoms? I think aborting the mission and retreating to safety would be the preferred action with such a rare and important ship. It is also strange to me that the Goblins aren't aware of that a "squid" are working with the Absolute. The 1 (dying) TrueSoul and the 2 Novice are "searching" the surroundings of the crash site for survivors, and when the party tell them, they turn hostile. That hints to me that the Absolute know the ship (or those onboard) are against the plot.

Hey Chris! I still think that the ship is with the Absolute, it is just that the illithids don't want cult members to know they are involved. Hence why the ship and the dead mind flayer are treated as enemies. The illithids want it that way.

what I dislike is if another group/power was making a move to take things over every other god/faction would do its own countermove which is why I hate the descent into avernus story. If a duke of hell can pull a city from the material then every other power would be doing it. whole point is that these great powers are supposed to be limited in how much that can interact with the material plane as there are rules as the overgod would intercede and ignoring him opposing forces would step in so if say demons/devils made a move then the heavens would move to stop them etc.

divine worship might not be directly related to Mind Flayers but I'm going to put forth an idea from ASOIAF. What is prayer exactly? It's telepathically sending your thoughts, feelings, desires and will to a God. It's remarkably similar to sending it to a Mind Flayer or Elder Brain. You can switch them out for each other to exploit people.

Reading wise, you might want to check out Ed Greenwood's 'The Herald'. I've only made theories related to its connections to BG3, so there is nothing concrete but I think that there might be something there regarding the Netherese.
