Muth is out w/ fever......#6 is the winningest PP in Preakness history - .25 cent Superkey - Seize the gray over - CF, Dan, Uncle Heavy, Imagination, and Tuscan Gold

Muth's defection alters the pace scenario in a big way. He was number 4, and I would assume that everyone drawn outside of post 4 moves in one spot. That would mean that Mystik Dan now breaks from post 4, Seize the Grey from post 5, Just Steel post 6, Tuscan Gold post 7, and Imagination post 8. Program numbers stay the same.

Move over Mystic Dan for fresh horses.

The fresh horses are an obstacle for the Derby winner. Not only are they fresh, but Muth is a 2-time Grade 1 winner and already beat Mystik Dan by 6 1/4 lengths. Imagination is a G2 winner and G1 placed. Uncle Heavy is a G3 winner and Tuscan Gold is lightly raced, G2 placed, and has upside. Decent field this year.

Based on the post draw, Muth could go to the front and Mystik Dan might track outside of that one. If he went left to the rail, he would be handing Muth a clear early lead.

@@JarrodHorak I think Mystik Dan would like to cut in front of Muth, similar to what he did to Dornoch in the Kentucky Derby. If Muth breaks fast, however, I think Mystik Dan will still go left, in behind Muth, and sit near the rail for a short trip. Good call with Sierra Leone, he had a good trip, and almost won.

@@deanalbertson7203 Intriguing riding tactics in this race. It will be an interesting chess match between Juan Hernandez and Brian Hernandez Jr. If Muth goes to the front, Mystik Dan could go to the rail, but Frankie Dettori aboard the other Baffert runner also has speed and might try to trap Mystik Dan inside. If Mystik Dan is aggressively handled, Imagination will probably go after him and Muth might stalk. None of these are need to lead types so early tactics might make or break the favorites.

You didn't talk about Track condition and so your little podcast here is null and void . Not sure what you Expert Handicappers are thinking lately..Yall made the exact same mistake leading up to the derby in which you knew it was going to rain in kentucky on Friday and Saturday the track not going to be fast yet you post your selections here not mentioning weather which forecast calls out for rain on fri/Sat in Baltimore.. How this is overlooked I have no idea..I also urge you to look at the Arkansas Derby once again as you missed a crucial part if the race being that you didn't mention Liberal Arts bolting into Mystic Dan which was no easy bump.. So can muth run in sloppy/ muddy conditions? We know that a strength of MD..Tight turns? And few other things on other horses..You ran thru this so fast and theres much more handicapping a race than that. Good Luck

First of all, this was just my quick thoughts on the post draw and was not meant to be a full blown handicapping video. That will come later this week. You must have missed my Derby wet track video. I was well aware of the possibility of rain at Churchill Downs and said that if the track was wet, Mystik Dan and Sierra Leone would be the main beneficiaries. The track dried out and was not wet on Derby Day. I guess you could argue that some moisture was still in the track, but Churchill dries out quickly so that is not a given. I saw the replay of the Arkansas Derby several times and mentioned it in multiple comments. Mystik Dan lost to Muth by more than six lengths. He did not have six lengths of trouble. He lost because he he did not get his preferred ground saving tactical trip, and he regressed after his big win in the Southwest. He is a horse with a zig zag sheets pattern. I also mentioned the weather forecast for Monday-Saturday of Preakness week in a video I posted earlier this week. I also said in that video that I would do a wet track video for the Preakness just like I did for the Derby if it looked like the track would be wet at Pimlico on May 18. I will wait for later in the week to see what the Preakness Day forecast looks like at that time. I have been posting Preakness videos every day. As for Mystik Dan and a wet track, everyone knows that he handles a wet track. Will others handle it? If it is wet, we will find out on Preakness Day. Also, a wet track at one venue is not the same as a wet track at another. There are many variables that come into play when handicapping a horse race. The tight turns at Pimlico is a myth. I grew up in Maryland and have been to Pimlico so many times I lost count. They used to speed up the track for the Preakness years ago but stopped that practice. It has been a fair track for many years but a track bias can pop up at any time.
