I don't really have options for using other platforms like discord or Patreon, so I'll just leave my recommendation here, and hope you see it. If you guys (Either or both), have not heard of or seen "Last Action Hero" it is another really excellent action movie where they actually kind of poke fun of old school 80s action movie stuff, but in the lore of this movie, it actually fits perfectly with the theme, I honestly think you will truly love it Last Action Hero - Staring Arnold 'Schwartzenvader' ;) and also Tom Noonan Technically an early 90s but very intentionally focused upon 80s style action on purpose for a specific reason (No Spoilers)

Originally, Arnie was supposed to win the hand-to-hand fight at the end. Arnie himself called it stupid, pointing out that the Predator is an absolute beast, and no human, no matter how jacked or skilled, is going to fist-fight it to death. I gotta say...props to him for not having such a Hollywood ego that he understood just how superior the character was to his own. Someone like Dwayne Johnson would've just gone with it and miraculously beat the thing up, and it wouldn't have been nearly as good.

"I was not expecting this movie to be this well made." Honestly, no one was, but it's why the movie has stood the test of time. John McTiernan did an exceptional job with this, only his second film. His next two, though, proved it was no fluke: DIE HARD, which is maybe the best action film Hollywood has ever produced, and THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER, as close to a perfect thriller as you can get. McTiernan was the real deal, man.

@@russellward4624 That's likely part of it, sure. I think the production experience of Lawrence Gordon and Joel Silver contributed to that, too, knowing how to get bang for their buck (shooting in Mexico, using a smaller company for the optical effects work, etc.). They also shut down production at one point while they waited for Stan Winston to finish his version of the Predator suit, and McTiernan used that time to start going through everything they'd already shot and seeing where changes could and should be made, effectively rethinking and retooling certain things on the fly and being able to pre-emptively rework the shooting schedule, rather than getting to the end of the shoot, starting post-production, and then realising you need to pull everybody back for a round of reshoots for it to cut together properly.

The “CIA/Russian mission” part of the story is simply just a storytelling tool to explain and show how tough Arnold and the cast are and gives them a reason to be there and come across the predator. The point of the predator repeating an mimicking human speech is the same concept of “animal calls” that hunters use.

Here's an interesting fact. The tree trap that took out the Predator, that's not how it's supposed to work. The Predator was meant to trip the trap, which would cause the log to fall and make a rope wrap around its foot and pull it up into the spikes. When it went around the trap, Arnie improvised, but you can actually see the rope lasso rise up.
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 2 жыл бұрын
holy crap, in the history of my life, you're the only other person i've heard understand Dutch's trap. (Although i thought the rope was supposed to pull ANY body part -- head, neck, foot, torso -- up into those spikes. Pretty clever...NO part of you wants to get booby-trapped.
@maskednil
@maskednil Жыл бұрын
@@slchance8839 I get it too. The log is the counterweight to the actual trap, the classic pull the prey up in the air trap. Only this time the spikes are in the way and will impale the Predator. The Predator fortunately stood right under the counterweight. That's why Arnold gave the WTF look when the Predator stood over him, he really thought that his chance was blown. Then he looks up, realizes the counterweight is gonna crush the Predator and trips it himself.
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 Жыл бұрын
@@maskednil Yes. THIS is also one of the problems I have with every Predator movie after #2: they keep remaking it thinking "primitive weapons and your wits" is how you beat the predators. No. You dont beat them. Arnie and Danny Glover got LUCKY. (Danny HAPPENED to get hold of the vibro-frisbee because it was stuck in the building NEXT to his head.) They're on safari. Thrill seeking: like cage diving with great white sharks or killing lions with a rifle. Occasionally, there's a hunting accident, but largely, hunting with rifles is so safe, we let our kids do it. The successive movies should have the hero win by barely SURVIVING, like Pitch Black or Jurassic Park #1.
@Thylonicus
@Thylonicus Жыл бұрын
@@slchance8839 This guy gets it. Though, I'd say that winning by wits is exactly what Dutch and Harrigan did. The successive movies didn't really understand what that meant, and how you had to set it up. We see Dutch not only make the traps, but change plans on the fly, like when they attacked that camp. So his realizing hos the spike trap counterweight could be used makes sense. Similarly, we see Harrigan refusing to give up, no matter what. Confronting his boss, but also his fear of heights. He refused to quit, so when he confronts the Predator at the end, it works; it had been set up well. Both had been shown to have these traits throughout their respective movies. The rest of the movies have one line of dialogue or one short scene that's supposed to act as Chekhov's Gun, but they come off weak and ineffectual. "Prey" was actually pretty good about that, though it's a shame that they didn't understand what made the Predator visually interesting and made him look somewhat more human. It wasn't a whole lot, but it was enough to lessen the impact and really look like a guy in a rubber mask.

i think the med kid sequence was a revolutionary scene, in movies when you deal with aliens they usually fall into two categories, animal like or humanoid and the Predator is clearly humanoid, also when it comes to injuries, aliens tend to either be resistant to injury.... either because our primitive weapons can't hurt them (usually based on technology) or they regenerate (due to their enhanced biology) and conquring them takes a massive superhuman effort or discovering their weakness the Predator is humanoid and while he has advanced technology and his armour is strong, he is still vulnerable and on his own, so he has to take care of himself (healing and probably feeding himself)...his flesh isn't bulletproof and he actually has to dig the bullet out and clean up the wound (presumably it could also get infected or leave a trail) and his tools, though not immediately recognizable, don't look futuristic and you can quickly understand their purpose, there is no Star Trek technology, no super healers and he shows pain and doesn't heal himself perfectly the first time.... this is not a god coming to plague humanity, this is a creature very similar to them taking his chances and while he does have some advantages, it isn't "shooting fish in a barrel", there is risk
@slchance8839
@slchance8839 2 жыл бұрын
100% i especially agree in that you quickly understand the purpose of his tools. I LOVE that part: -clean the wound -disinfect -antibiotics -clamp bleeding -bind and cover? i THINK i remember seeing him have a bandage on that leg later in the movie after his ghillie function got damaged. I LOVE LOVE when a movie doesnt insult my intelligence by dumbing down what i'm seeing. I can figure it out. If not, too bad for me. That's life: big screen and real life. I had to walk out of Jurassic Dominion because it felt like i was watching a Barney cartoon.

If the Predator were to use technology to far advanced, then there wouldn't be as much sport in the hunt. There HAS to be substantial risk for him or else the trophies wouldn't have substantial meaning. That's why he stripped his projectile weapon at the end, because he'd found the apex prey and wanted to fight as close to Arnold's level as possible, because the greater risk would give his Arnold trophy greater meaning. Unfortunately, the risk did not pay off this time and the Arnold prey beat him. I believe the Predator was proud to have died this way.

@rsrt6910 As the lore plays out, in the direct sequel novel, Predator: Concrete Jungle, we find out that the Predator was killed on the Hunt... which is indeed an honorable death, especially since he fulfilled law and eliminated all traces of himself. The thing is, unlike Harrigan, Dutch was never directly acknowledged as an equal with a formal duel. This means he was classified, not as a Hunter like Harrigan was, but remained Prey. The Hunt was never called off. Harrigan had earned their respect by _hunting a Hunter_ all the way back to the ship, which took some doing, and they acknowledged his skill and treated him as if he was a Hunter himself and let him face his own Prey one on one. And a Prey that HAS killed a Hunter? Is even more honor and prestige than Prey who possibly could. Dutch was hunted for the rest of his days by the Hunters. If I remember right... in the third attempt, his strength and wits finally failed him and he was claimed as a trophy.

The scorpion scene is haunting when you think about it…. The predator picks up the dead scorpion that Mac “crushed”, holds it in his hand and repeats “Any time”. Mac said this to Dillon but more significantly, it symbolizes that the Predator could kill any of them “any time” he wants. He could easily crush them as easily as Mac crushed the scorpion.

It should be noted that none of these rules are official, and are instead a culmination of multiple sources. As such, the rules of the code may differ, or be false: Code Violations: Those who break the code are Bad Bloods, and are considered an insult to Yautja culture. They are to be destroyed when encountered. Hunting Intelligent Species: According to War, there are strict rules concerning the hunting of intelligent species. Those who are not blooded cannot do this at all. However, some hunters wants these laws overturned. Hunting Worthy Game: When hunting, the hunter must be sure that his prey is considered game and lawful to kill. Worthy game must fill the following criteria: Can defend itself and/or is able to kill the hunter himself, of age (killing children and the elderly is considered highly dishonorable), not linked to other lives (so that removing the prey will not doom another, e.g. pregnant women), and not weakened by diseases. This excludes self-defence. Equalize the odds: Killing prey when using less equipment is considered a greater prize, and hunters should typically give their prey a fighting chance for honor's sake. If the prey demands close-combat, the hunter is to fight to their prey's standards, and should minimize use of their Plasmacaster or other projectile weapons. Failing in the Hunt: Should the hunter fail in one's quest, he should take his own life to retain his honor than to live in shame. However, some cowards prefer to live in obscurity rather than die. This is considered to be dishonorable and suicide is then "assisted" by an Enforcer.

Who are Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers victims: highschoolers/college kids/camp Counselors/Babysitters and Suburban Parents. That's not cool or tough or badass,that's a pussy move that Big Bullies do to smaller Prey. Then you Look at the Predator and you got Black ops Soldiers,17th Century Pirates, a hardened Grizzled Cop during the height of the Drug war in LA and even more. The Predator doesn't Hunt down Kids or innocent people just walking around minding they're own business like a pussy,he takes all his gear and throws down in the Dirty muck to prove it is the superior warrior and even if defeated his death helps show the worthiness of his foe to the other Predators.

I personally feel the opening scene with the spaceship should have been left out because it spoils it. It would work better if the audience has no idea what's hunting the guys, whether alien, ghost, or some hitech unit. I love how they introduce this badass unit of unstoppable action heroes and then pit something more badass against them. It's a cool concept. It starts like a typical Arnie action movie, like Commando or something, and then throws a crazy scifi/horror enemy into the mix.

Completely agree. Apparently that was the initial intention, but the studio decided that the audience was dumb and so they spoil the mystery right at the get go. Honestly is a lot creepier when you don't know anything about this seemingly unstoppable force hunting you down, whether it is natural, mechanical, or even supernatural. Would have been much better that way...

100%. For me, I GOT TO have that experience. I first saw this first on VHS and for some reason, the first few minutes of the tape were ruined, static-y, and unwatchable. I never knew about the opening scene and rewatched my VHS about as often as any of us Predator fans. One day, I saw the first few minutes on cable or something and was kinda shocked. At the time, Lucas had revamped Star Wars and Empire so assumed it was one of those things where the director went back and "improved on" Predator. So...yah you're right: without the opening scene you are even more blown away. I've already decided that if i ever show this movie to a newbie, i'm gonna start the movie on the earth scenes not outer space.

The thing about Dutch's team is that they are built for combat...but the purpose of that combat is exclusively to extract hostages and PoWs from hostile territory. Yeah, they kill a lot of dudes in the process sometimes, but the point is the rescue, not the killing. Not much you can do with people trying to shoot you...except shoot back, after all. But Dutch won't take his team somewhere JUST to kill a dude. He sees a difference between just going to kill someone, and being required to kill to preserve the lives of the captured, and/or his own men.

Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, 7'2", was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. Sonny Landham RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was on prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It was 110 degrees in the shade while it was 42 degrees at night. It rained for 2 weeks making filming even more difficult. It was a box office and critical success making $100 million dollars ($350 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects but lost to InnerSpace.

They changed the original suit to be more safe. Its funny that JVC never dragged nobody, yet, some people in the production tell the story how JVC acted like a diva, and didnt know how to behave once he saw the red suit (for the invisible scenes) and nobody wouldnt saw his face. I guess we will never know the real story, since theres two versions.

I bet many have already commented with all the fun facts about it so I'll talk about the sequels. - 'Predator 2' is in my opinion a perfect sequel: different setting, more of the predator. - 'Predators' references the first movie a bit too much but overall is a cool movie. - 'The Predator' is atrocious. - There are 2 crossovers Alien vs Predator. Both are garbage but the idea of the 1st is interesting and the 2nd has the most badass predator (but the movie is unbearable). The franchise is expanded in comic books (that's why people will comment with lots of details that you won't find in the movies). - There's a new sequel coming: 'Prey'. We only know that it's set at the time of the European colonization of North America and the human protagonist is a native American girl who wants to be a hunter though the men in her tribe are against it... I hate being political but there's a serious risk that it will be another inclusivity, female-empowerment movie. Some suspect that the predator will be female too and in the end the villains will be the white Europeans and the predator will side with the native Americans.

I find people tend to become too hypercritical when it comes to action or adventure movies with leading ladies (Hell look at how many men instantly start throwing around the words woke and pandering at every Marvel movie/show with a leading lady. A comic book movie catering to an underserved audience they want to make money from? Who coud imagine such a world?) I'm excited for the "predators throughout history" aspect and hope the movie does well enough they do similar movies. I hope they make them standalone and don't try do the whole cinematic universe thing, too many of those have tried to startup only to crash and burn. We could use some one and done excellent rated r action movies.
@robertoprestigiacomo253
@robertoprestigiacomo253 Жыл бұрын
@@AngryCosmonaut I'm not saying the idea is bad in general. We have plenty of examples of badass women roles and guys like them. We also have non-white heroes and white people like them. What people don't like is to be told that they're shit because they are male and/or white. It's not a bad thing to have diverse, female heroes. It becomes woke when: ■ Females are naturally better than any man at everything, even when it makes no sense, and they constantly humiliate and belittle men. ■ Female characters are depicted as basically men in female bodies to make them strong. ■ Men and white people are antagonized by overpushing how they spit on women and non-white people. ■ Writers convert already established heroes into females (e.g. Thor, Hulk, Batman). In my book these things are neither inclusive nor empowering. Under this modern framework, the risk of having a woke movie is really high, and considering the trailer of the movie this risk seems to be confirmed: ☑Native American proatoginst (inclusivity). ☑Men from a warrior society who don't want the (young and small) girl to be a warrior. ☑Young girl being better than the warrior men. ☑Scene with white men raiding.

the predators are an ancient warrior species called the Yautja. they have a strict honour code and deep ranking system. they are intergalactic hunters who gain ranks and favour by difficulty of hunt. more prized kills and more dangerous opponent's worth more honour. they collect trophies of kills to take back to their clans as proof of kills. humans are rated quite dangerous due to our intelligence and ballistic weapons so they hunt our soldiers, police, gangsters etc etc regularly. they don't hunt children, non combatants or the sickly ... there's no honour in that. predators who break the code are called bad blood and hunted by other predators. their home world is hot and therefore they do prefer hotter climates. they've been hunting humans for hundreds and hundreds of years. the predator hunting here is actually likely quite a low rank/inexperienced predator brawler.

@@charzanboo9940 from knowledge from a few comics and predator games I've played. the type of armour, helmet plus weaponary used plus humans militia are not considered the hardest hunt so this was a predator moving up the ranks. the plasma caster (mounted shoulder gun) and knuckle blades are trade mark of the brawler class predator 2, that predator looked like a rank they call stalkers. smaller build much more stealth based (more suited to inner city environments). the bleeding spear is the weapon of the stalker class. as predators use different weapons and different kills they gain status and rank and depending on their strengths go into certain classes. I know 1 rank for example a predator must kill a hive queen (from alien) for example.. its literally a right of passage. quite a long time ago since read upon on all of this but yea the predators have lots of classes and ranks. there's also some shaman/spiritualist type predators who are massively high up in ranks. often ancient clan chiefs. but we've never seen them in movies yet

@17:45 this is a great example of recon by fire -- bad guy in front of you somewhere? Shoot it until it stops being there.

This movie was a great part of my childhood in the early 90's😄 I grew up on Arnold Schwarzenegger movies and found out ways to watch his movies( friend's, neighbor's, cousin's place)even though it was restricted at home. I must have seen this movie 7-8 times.

I used to have a Predator digital numbers watch back in the early 2000s that I lost. I still miss it sometimes.

Recommendation: War of the roses, The Outsiders, The Hitcher 1986. You'll be mad for days if you watch Alien verses Predator. It's practically a romantic movie between an explorer and predator which makes him attack the alien. This movie is definitely a "feel with me" because you are in it. The tension, the held breath, the square-off - we went zombie cover but with mud to blind it to body heat. Arnold was not playing anymore, he was alone and panic-mode said "win you idiot! This thing killed everyone!" 😁. And I love the make-up mask off and on; the little horror aspect of predator learning their language through mimicry. Imagine the mindf*ck of being laughed at with your comrades voice. Not to mention the fact that you'd be blown up if you didn't put it together what predator was doing with his armor.

The Predator didn't attack at first because he's a hunter. A true hunter studies its prey before moving in to attack.

Predators is by far the best sequel. If you watch any of the sequels, watch that one.

The inspiration for Predator was the 1980 "Without Warning", a B-Movie about an alien that hunts humans for sport.

I'm a forever fan of this movie, the last one, prey? Was a disater, tried to recreate this one, but the Predator is in another level even for Arnold all jacked and with military experience, love this movie.

The two actors that dealt with the claymore booby trap were actual US special forces during Vietnam. In interviews they both said they had PTSD symptoms while filming. One of which is caught on camera with the trigger of the mini gun being held down for several seconds after it runs out of ammo. That was not something planned but was kept in the movie as it is something a person in shock might do.
