The predator aka Yautja not much information is given in the movies you can get more of that from the comics but I'll let you in on some of the stuff about them below if you see them hunting alone that means there blooded they've killed a Queen alien from the movie alien or something strong from a different planet. If you have a gun they'll use their long-range weapons. If you us close quarters weapons they'll do the same. They're honorable. shooting is actually considered dishonorable but it's fair game is you do it. They don't kill pregnant species because they want more of you to be there when they come back to hunt. If you are a challenge they take your skull 💀 if you suck they skin you and hang you upside down for humiliation I guess. If you beat them they self-destruct so you don't get their technology they even give you a countdown to run. Now this predator the city predator name is ghost he was over confident and was going ape shit the other predators came there to get him because he was doing too much lol the more weapons you see on a predator the higher skill.

@@thomasdoscher6555 In reality, although in Prey they wanted to pay tribute to this film by showing the weapon, they did so without knowing the origin that they had already canonically established for this weapon. The canonical story is as follows if you wish to read it: In 1718 , the flintlock pistol was owned by Captain Raphael Adolini , who with his crew had arrived on the coasts of Guinea to deliver a treasure to the church, however the crew did not have the same plans. The crew turned against him, trying to kill Raphael Adolini to obtain the treasure but he was much more agile and faster, killing several pirates with his flintlock pistol. As the humans fought, a silent Yautja watched from deep within the jungle, but for the second confrontation, Golden Angel emerged from hiding to join the battle and fight back to back with Adolini, slaughtering the crew with her extendable sword. After supposedly killing the entire crew, Raphael and Golden Angel were about to end this battle with a sword fight, but hidden in the bushes, one of the pirates had survived and managed to shoot Raphael in the back. Golden Angel, furious at the theft of his trophy, mercilessly killed the pirate using his plasmacaster and then turned to the fallen Adolini, who with his last breath of life handed him his pistol accompanied by the phrase "Take it." Golden Angel received the weapon and to give Adolini an honorable end, he buried him in the sand along with the treasure that caused all this, leaving his extendable sword as a symbol of respect for

It was pre-Matrix 90s, of course there's no CGI. If you want to see how badly that turned out when they tried it, look at Lawnmower Man, and consider that it came out 2 years after Predator 2. The Xenomorph skull originally in this movie was a tribute since both franchises were created by Fox. The real reason why it was in the film is because: "In the climax of the film, we see the Xenomorph skull in the trophy cabinet. This wasn’t in the script. As Hopkins was touring Stan Winston’s studio, he saw the xenomorph skulls on Winston’s wall and said “We have to have that in the movie”. He quickly storyboarded it in there. Fox wanted to cut it out but Hopkins fought to keep it." But because of it it spawned the “what if” then Dark Horse comics who had the rights to the IPs created the series Aliens vs Predator. It wasn’t until years later they decided to make it into the movie. The Aliens vs Predator series is not conical to the Alien universe. So it was THIS movie that spawned the what if.

I remember when that first game dropped on the SNES, and it was GOOD. (an opinion, I know) Also Murtaugh really should've told Riggs what he'd damn done gone damn did go through before they met. If I remember correctly Predators are drawn to places of conflict because that's where you tend to find warriors and thus the worthiest opponents so it seems quite likely they'd be attracted to an ongoing gang war. Predators are about the challenge and glory but they adhere to a code as you saw with the pregnant cop, the unarmed people and the victor of the battle. If you're not a threat or a worthy opponent they'll basically pass you by because there's no self preservation or glory in it for them. Tbh, as sad as it is they actually have better ethics than a lot of humans. 😅
@Hal2718 Жыл бұрын
They're just using the same general rules we have for hunting. We use camouflage and advanced weaponry to hunt animals, but most developed nations have limits on what you can hunt. No infants, no females during mating season cause obviously they might be pregnant, etc. Now of course the Predator will have additional rules since a lot of the things they hunt are intelligent so they'll have rules like no killing anyone unable to defend themselves. That'd be like us hunting a wolf with no teeth or claws.
@forestsmith1892 Жыл бұрын
That and it also makes it a lot easier to conceal their activites to a certain degree, by going into active war zones where atrocities and killing could just be blamed on the enemy.

Fun fact about the flintlock is that the original story behind it was in a comic called predator:1718 (I believe) where a pirate captain is mutinied by his crew on an island and try to kill him, but the predator(elder) sees him and helps him. Afterwards the captain is fatally wounded and gives his flintlock to the predator, which is why in the movie when he says, take it in a different voice it’s because that’s what the pirate captain said to him before he died, but not a lot of people knew that story, so that’s why they decided to include it in prey so that way there could be a connection.

The Predator is a hunter. (In fact, in a later sequel, characters remark that "Hunter" would make a better nickname for him than "Predator.") It's a custom among hunters as old as hunting itself that a hunter does not claim prey that is in the reproductive process. That is pregnant, nursing or copulating. Part of the reason might be chivalry, but it's more about making sure there will be game to hunt next season.
@DavidConnors-k8y4 ай бұрын
When I learned how to hunt growing up in Louisiana, one of the primary lessons was that you never shoot females, only males. Bucks, never does. You shoot does, you impair the reproductive ability to repopulate, which is why it's forbidden.
@kermitbohlen84014 ай бұрын
This. I hear a lot of people use the word "honor" for the predator, but it's not really honor. It's just a code, which is not the same thing. Predators exhibit a variety of classic game hunter codes, which include, like mentioned above, not killing pregnant prey. There's also a significant and obvious "match the weapon of the enemy" sort of code, which is pretty typical for a "test of skill/strength" - so, heavily armed enemies are allowed to be killed by heavy weapons, whereas prey that faces down with just melee or barehand have to be matched, otherwise it's a cowardly kill. But the "alpha" target, the goal seems to be to whittle down the alpha from it's absolute strongest to it's most basic - like dutch - take away his team, take away his guns and explosives - leave him with nothing but hand to hand, then face him down face to face, fist to fist.

Remember that while you knew the gun from Prey that this film came decades earlier and was the first time the gun was shown. Seeing it in Prey was a callback to this film as well as indicating that at some point after Prey the owner of that gun was killed by a Yautja (predator species), possibly the same one that gives the gun to the MC here as they seem to have an extended lifespan. The MC was given the gun because he defeated a Yautja in single combat according to their rules of engagement. Speaking of those rules of engagement, the Yauja are not only concerned about if someone is armed. They care if an intelligent target is armed and combative. They are also concerned with hierarchies like you mentioned in your reaction. They went after the Columbian gang because they were dominant at the start of the film. Then they went after the Jamaicans in the apartment who were doing their own form of dominance game against the Columbian's leader. Danny was killed because he went up to recover the blade, and the Yautja are big on cleaning up after themselves. Then it was King Willie's turn. Only then was the MC's team stalked, with Leona being spared because her being pregnant meant killing her would also kill a noncombatant.

Delightful reaction y'all. I especially liked how you both were actually paying attention and piecing stuff together, it's always fun to see folks get into the movies like that. While "Predator 2" wasn't as well-received as the first movie, I still enjoy this one immensely for what it is and for how it expanded on Yautja (The actual name of their species) lore and technology. So that being said, let's touch on a few details. As you both have probably figured out, the Predators do have something of a code-of-honor that they follow while on hunts; rules to govern what is and isn't acceptable. That being said, the following things are considered against their laws/taboo: Killing unarmed prey, killing children and pregnant women, and certain sickly prey are likewise off-limits; though the latter two rules can be waived if the forbidden prey in question are armed and trying to harm the Predator(s) hunting them. They're also very protective of their technology when it comes to it possibly falling into the hands of prey-species like humans, which is part of the reason why they'll self-destruct if too badly injured or otherwise facing the risk of their tech being recovered. As others have pointed out, the xenomorph skull was basically a nod to the ALIEN franchise, but by this point there was already a comic-book series put out by Dark Horse that started back in 1989; one year prior to this movie. Fun fact: The Predators not only actively seed worlds with xenomorphs and hunt them for sport, but it's considered a rite-of-passage for entering adult-hood; which of course means better hunts and better gear to use. These rite-of-passage hunts end with the successful newbies getting "blooded", in other words marked using the acid-blood of slain xenomorphs. At the end, the Elder predator gave Danny Glover that pistol as a show of respect, and possibly as a subtle warning that he hasn't seen the last of them. Their race knows strength and skill when they see it and respect it accordingly, so if you can take down one of them in "fair and honorable" combat, they'll acknowledge you and show due respect. Going back to the comics and novels for a moment, there's one instance where a woman named Machiko Noguchi ended up fighting side-by-side with a veteran Predator in a colony that had been overrun by xenomorphs. For her efforts, destroying an entire hive and scoring a kill on a Queen, she got "blooded" and the chance to go hunting with the Predators; which she took.

The Yautja (predator’s) are a race that value honour and strength among all things. So after Harrigan(Danny Glover) defeated the “City Hunter” Predator in was essentially single combat the other clan members let him live out of respect for his victory over their fallen clansmen. The flintlock pistol was both a Easter egg nod to the comic as well as a tell tale of how long the Yautja have been coming to earth to perform their “Hunts” the Xenomorph skull was just an Easter egg to the only other sci fi baddie that made a noticeable impression on audiences(as mentioned by previous commenters)

If I remember correctly Predators are drawn to places of conflict because that's where you tend to find warriors and thus the worthiest opponents so it seems quite likely they'd be attracted to an ongoing gang war. Predators are about the challenge and glory but they adhere to a code as you saw with the pregnant cop, the boy with the toy gun, the unarmed civilians and the victor of the battle. If you're not a threat or a worthy opponent they'll basically pass you by because there's no self preservation or glory in it for them. If I'm honest, as sad as it is they actually have better ethics than a lot of humans. 😅 Giving the him the gun was emphasize how long the Predators (Yautja) been visiting Earth and the Alien skull was to show that they hunt other worthy adversary across the universe/galaxies.

In the lore, when someone defeated a Yautja (Predator), they became a de facto Predator, which meant that any members of that "clan" or "tribe" of Predators accepted him as a "worthy hunter". The pistol was given to Mike Harrigan as a "gift" by the Elder Yautja, recognizing that fact. Yautja almost NEVER relinquish a trophy. hence the casual "Take it." when he tossed the pistol to Harrigan. The Yautja in this film was portrayed asa more "juvenile" member of the species, hence the reason he was so reckless regarding whether or not he was seen. (teenagers always have a "it can't happen to me" attitude, and it is also reflected in the somewhat juvenile style of the mindgames he plays when hunting. He's "having fun." Yes, this film establishes the fact that both the Yautja (Predators) and the Xenomorphs (Aliens) were a part of the same universe, and established the canon that would lead to the eventual "Aliens vs. Predators" movie in 2004. In the movie canon, up to that point, there have been 3 "Worthy Hunters" so far. The first was Dutch in the original film (1987), the second was Mike Harrigan in "Predator 2" (1994) and the third was the character Alexa Woods in "Aliens vs. Predators", (2004). In lore and the comics, there have been many other "Worthy Hunters", and I suppose we could also consider the character, Naru, a "Worthy Hunter" because she did survive in "Prey", 2022. Fun Fact #1: The Elder Yautja in the end scene was actually the original costume from the 1987 film, and was retextured by the Stan Winston Creature Shop to make it look older. The Stan Winston Creature shop made the original Predator creature, including all of the animatronics used to articulate the mandibles on the Yautja faces. Fun Fact #2: Peter Cullen - the voice of the original Optimus Prime (Transformers) was also the man who voiced the eerie clicks growls of the Yautja. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naHNmXxjmrd4bMU Sorry for the long comment. Great review guys! These first two films are absolute classics, and they made the Yautja my all time favorite bad guy in cinema to this day. Nothing has ever been as good.

Another fun fact about the trophy wall is almost all of the skulls subtly make nods or references to other movies. That first huge skull you see on the left was a random conceptual design that was later used as the basic design for the skull of the Kothoga, the monster from the movie The Relic which Stan Winston also did the special effects for.

One of 2 of my favorite sequels to any franchise!! So, the reason there were so many Yautja (Predator) was for the youngling blooding. They were different clans and their young ones earning their clan marking. Killing a Yautja warrior earns the respect of the Yautja clans. The gun at the end was Harrigan's trophy for defeating the young warrior. Btw, the zenomorph skull does elude to their place in the Alien/Predator universe. I can't wait for you to see AVP!! The Xenomorph skull was meant to communicate that Alien and Predator share the same universe and it wasstated by the director as meant to show that the Predators do hunt Aliens and would serve as a teaser for the upcoming AVP movie they were planning which was all inspired by the AVP comics which released just before Predator 2.

The gun was a "related/familiar" trophy... If you win a good fight... you get a trophy in their culture. And yes... Predator 2 took the bold step of implying the Aliens universe is in the same universe as Predator... something that films never did in this time. The comics took this information and went to town... then video games and then the films. Ridley Scott however hated this... and created Prometheus to rewrite it to say otherwise... however true fans of the franchise actually disregard Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Covenant and only see them as "Alternative Lore". Predator 2 was a great sequel to Predator... something that would of been hard to acheive and really boosted the Aliens and Predator franchise.

The "Raphael Adolini 1715" gun holds profound symbolism, signifying the extraterrestrial visitors' longstanding engagement in Earth's history as hunters. Its historical designation suggests a lineage of these otherworldly visitors coming to Earth on a recurring 'safari' spanning centuries. By giving the gun to Hannigan, they acknowledge him as a victor, implying that he has successfully reclaimed it, marking a symbolic triumph for humanity after it was once taken from them. This artifact becomes a testament to the enduring battle between humans and these cosmic hunters, emphasising the significance of this ongoing struggle in the broader context of Earth's history.

To answer the question, am sure you have got comments on it, 40:30 it was a xenomorph skull, the director just did it as a nod to the aliens movies, not knowing it would start a whole movement (pre-social media) for the alien vs predator movie for years to come. Also Keyes was suppose to be Dutch, but Arnold turned it down for several reasons, the main one being him dying, he was still a big time star at that time, wouldn't have made since.

At the end of the 'Prey' movie they show a drawing of the predator ship howering over the village. I am pretty sure some other predator came for the girl, finally killed her and took the antique pistol as a trophy since she was a great warrior. Later the predators gave the same pistol to Danny Glover's character as a mark of respect since he single handedly killed one of their own.

The pirate who owned the pistol was in a confrontation with that leader predator, but in the middle of their battle the pirate captains crew staged a mutiny and tried killing both of them. So for brief moment the predator and captain stood side by side. But unfortunately the captain was killed by the crew mates and his last words to the predator was “take it” as he gave the predator his pistol.

On the Alien Skull...from what I read and remember, the skull was an unfinished, unpainted, Alien head that didn't get used in Aliens (1996). So as a nod, and as a inside joke, that our alien beat your alien, someone working for the props department, sneaked that into the set design. The scene was then shot, edited, and made it's way onto the final theatrical version of the movie without anyone noticing. But audiences in theaters caught it, as well on the easily, pauseable and reverseable VHS audiences. That blew everyone's minds, just like you two, and created the fire to see their two favorite aliens do battle onscreen. Unfortunately because the properties for both franchises where owned by separate studios, they were never in agreement on how to make a crossover happen. They couldn't agree on a script, financing, distribution, advertising, etc etc. The only way to see them together was in a series of Predator comics by Dark Horse Comics, and various video games. And that remained that way until they figured out an agreement for the 2004 release of Alien vs Predator. So no, these two franchises were never supposed to crossover. They were two totally different projects, in totally different movie universes. But now, because of several crossover movies, a lot of newer audiences think that these two were always linked.

Film is fun to watch for sure and has some great moments and lore expansion, but I can't help myself but notice that they started to degrade Predators from this film after. I mean, Harrigan here acts in the very same way Mac did in the original Predator... and we all know how it ended... They did not let mindless rush for revenge to overcome the hunter in the 1st film, so that we knew that the Predator is smarter and just plays with them like a matador. But then they let it pass in the 2nd film and...it felt like this 2nd hunter is simply not that good. And with each new film this felling only grew stronger [at least for me].

Saw this in the theater - first one is best but this one is solid and entertaining. So lore wise, 1st movie released in 87. In 1989, Dark Horse comics releases a really great limited series called Aliens vs Predator. And you were right as you mentioned in another video - in the comic, hunting a Xenomorph is a coming of age ritual for the Predators. Hence the skull appearing a year later in Predator 2 was a great easter egg for fans (as before the comic, there was no connection between both franchises). Sadly, any of the two versus movies they made matching up both creatures are not as great as the comic series. At this point, you have seen the best three movies. Side note - you mentioned the score. When Glover goes to Danny's grave, the musical queue is the queue from the first movie when Mac's is sitting with Blaine's body in the body bag and saying goodbye. A great callback.

I read a long time ago that this particular predator was young but slightly older than the one that Arnold fought. As a predator becomes more capable, they will hunt in increasingly more dangerous places and/or prey. Humans are a priced hunt for young predators because of our intelligence. But for all we know, there are far, far more dangerous, cthulhu type creatures they hunt in other galaxies. Too add, I also read that the ones Arnold and Danny fought would be in the human equivalent of their mid to late teens.

It was my understanding that the one from the original Predator was a more seasoned hunter due to the less weapons and more remote location. The Predator from 2 had more weapons and being in a city with a higher population had more prey to hunt. I think that's why there was the rest of the group of Predators there as well. Not necessarily there to hunt but to observe while that Predator trained further into hunting. The Predator from 1 was there by itself.

The Alien/Predator universe has a lot of in depth lore covering both species in not just the movies, but games, comics, novels and other licensed source materials that fans of the franchise will happily help explain. This lore covers everything from Alien breeding and caste system, to Predators hunting code, clans and technology. The official name of the two species are also revealed with Predators being called Yautja, and Aliens being called Xenomorphs. The expanded media covers their history and relationship with each other, humans, Earth and other planets.

The pistol was originally intended to show that the Predators had been around for a long time (The date was supposed to be 1640, not 1715) and as a run in to the Predator 3 film, which was never made and instead we eventually got Predators as the third film. They did however follow up in the mid 90s with the graphic novel "Predator: 1718" which showed the Predator Greyback getting the pistol from a pirate captain it had been hunting, but ended up fighting side by side with against a mutual foe. When they (much later) filmed Prey they decided to break the original story behind the pistol and tie it into that film which is why you’ll often hear different stories about the “true” origin of the pistol. The Alien skull was just intended as an easter egg but was also picked up in a graphic novel run and after many years of teasing the concept the Alien vs Predator film finally became a reality.
