Predator 212 5000 RPM Governor Mod (Not Removal)

** Note ***
It is possible that you will need to back out the throttle stop screw. This is the machine screw that captures a silver spring on the throttle arm assembly. You can back it out a little at a time or completely remove it.

Get a billet flywheel, I blew mine up and it blew a hole in the engine..

I would say static adjustment for the governor arm should have been mentioned. Most people know about the throttle stop screw that needs to be removed, but i had to losen the static adjustment very slightly to get a full close, and full open with this given adjustment that probably increaced my rpm from 4000 to 5000.

Lol I've just ripped out the governor and rev it as high as it will go. Been like that for years on my mini bike and still hasn't blown. Sure throws fireballs out the exaust when I let off at max rpm tho

FWIW the little round nipple on the choke lever is for plugging the fuel line. Fits perfect. Good video, thanks.

Hey thanks for the tip. I will be uploading a video tomorrow night doing a condensed tutorial on this with a tach to verify RPM's. I'll also be doing a 25 hour 4800 RPM torture test on a stock hemi governor adjusted to prove reliability as well.

David Horn No problem. If you check out my other videos i have a tutorial on how to remove the governor completely as well and how to set up the linkage afterwards. you would need a 8mm,10mm, pliers, hammer, screw driver, and a grinder or file and you can do it as well.

Hey back in the day of flat head B&S engines, that's all we had to do is move the springs, or bend the fan blade that was acted upon by the flywheel fam that cooled the engines! I got 30 mph out of my little Fox mini bike with a 3.4 B&S engine! Wow I only wish I had one if these engines! Back then the best engine to start with was a 6 hp B&S engine! That was available new for around $150! But that was a lot of money in 1968! But my buddy and I installed one in his Sears mini bike that came with a 4 hp Techumsa and a small tq converter with a jack shaft the world leave a small 4' patch of rubber on concrete! But we added that 6 hp Briggs with a tweaked governor and got just about 50 mph! Plus s 10' patch on concrete! That little bike could run with Yamaha Mini Enduros till the Yamaha hit top gear! Plus it could climb hills like mad! We then had to put bigger tires and wheels on, with a front fork that came off a Yamaha! I wish I had a photo of that little beast! It was king of the minus back in the day! I ended up buying a new Hodaka Ace 100, just so I could run with him! But them he ended up buying a 125 Penton ISDT and we both grew up!

if you exceed the factory set governed rpm without removing the governor wheel then the governor wheel can shatter, causing terrible engine damage. It's just a risk you have to take. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Good video, i will do this after i just get it running thanks, im trying to get an old school mini bike going, i went with Northern Tool brand 208cc motor called the ironnton, have not found any videos or info on these motors. Main reason i went with it was the rearward pull of the pull string , apposed to predator forward pull. Problem i'm having is these newer motors are much wider than the old motors, clutch and rear sprocket dont quite line up, i have more room on shaft to move inward, do youall know of any parts suppliers with deeper offset clutch sprocket, and a rear wheel with longer axle shaft, or is it ok to use 3 - 3.5 inch spacer. thanks for any help, i'll be 60 this summer and have been out of the mini bike world for about 47 yrs! Its so dang cool to see and learn so much from you tube, WE ARE REALLY LIVING IN A GREAT TIME.

CC im not sure who would carry those honestly. best bet is probably reposition the engine in the frame so it all ligns up if its not to much of a shift one way or the other.

How did you add a second wire to your tachometer in your other video? I think I have the same one from amazon and it only has one wire and that wire is stranded not holding two inside the sheathing. Thanks

So I want to do this mod but I worried I could blow my block, how long have you ran it like this with no problems? I have added a header to my engine and thinking about geting the jets and filter from go power sports to add to it, what are your thoughts?

That's odd. My springs are setup exactly like this on a clone that came with the Coleman mini bike I just bought. I haven't ran the engine yet. The bike got all scratched up in shipping and I have everything apart to be painted when winter is over. For the "stock" racing class you speak of, are you allowed to remove the muffler and open up (grind out) the material at the flange to create a better transition of flow? Those mufflers are already very restrictive. Point is to do what you can to improve the stock setup with little or no money. It may help only a fraction, but doesn't every little bit help?

Deucealive75 the stock class doesnt allow for any modificaion to the exhaust or head at all. some places allow you to remove the governor completely and run a pipe, just not in my area.

all I did was remove the governor arm. ran a rod from the carburetor to the throttle.. new fuel tube.. new pipe and absolutely no air filter pure air flow 40 + running strong now for months

You won't hit 5000 rpm only with this "mod." On your other video, you have an upgraded exhaust, air filter, and possibly other "NR Racing" mods and you still didn't hit 5000 when you hooked it up to a tachometer. How can you claim 5000 on a bone stock motor just by moving a spring?

Manikapiptili Sanchez a stock predator with no governor will run 5500 to 6k rpm with no mods except governor removal. so yes you can modify the governor on a stock engine to reach 5k rpm or thereabouts.

If you do no other mods to a motor other than removing the governor, you're setting yourself up for either a serious injury, or death. A stock flywheel cannot handle running without a governor. Your other video shows you hitting under 5,000 rpm with upgrades. Why not do a video of a stock motor, with this "mod" hooked up to a tachometer? You will be further from 5,000 than your motor with an upgraded air intake and exhaust. I promise.

mods that increase hp have nothing to do with rpm, the only thing limiting the rpm is the connecting rod

Manikapiptili Sanchez I just got a 4000 rpm spring kit for my Briggs, it's a factory part number too. When first setting it up I was shooting for around 4200. It went 4600 and I lifted off and readjusted. I was able to settle around 4300.

I did adjust motor as much as posable, even went with stainless steel smaller diameter bolts, i'm about 1/4" off or less, have you heard anything good or bad about ironton motor, and as far as 3.5 inch wheel spacer, is that ok to run. thanks again

CC 3 1/2 spacer seems like quite a bit to me hobestly.....would have to see it. you might need to reposition the motor plate to get your alignment. I think the ironton are the same engine as the predator basically....just costs more. Ive never had one on a kart but i have one on a northern tool pressure washer and its been a good engine

I went and looked at mine. It was hooked up the same way I guess I did it by accident when messing with the linkage. Need to get a tach for my mini bike now. What are your thoughts doing this to the linkage and a zip tie on the spring??

kenny loveday thats a different engine. the governor could work differently or also have something else limiting the throttle. Hard to say without seeing it in person.

hey kevin, my friend tried the same thing... its not a different governer but on the coleman minibikes its not the governer... the stock hand throttle is limited so what you need to do is play with it, maybe take it apart and then you will get full throttle response! it hasnothing to do with the governer if you havent already messed with the throttle

You need to make sure that there is no return spring bind where the throttle cable connects. One Coleman owner here on you tube noticed this after he backed out the throttle limiter screw. He corrected it by cutting off about 4 coils from the throttle return spring. This shortens the spring to eliminate the bind. The Hisun engine on the Coleman has the same throttle assembly arrangement that all these clones have had for years.

Alcus hudson bad things if the governor is left in engine and arm isnt retained by something. if its just left with nothing it can swing over and the crank weight will hit it and probably break the crank

Yeah i cant recall the exact spring locations. I hadnt set one up in a long time. Really just need to dial out the limiter screw and play with spring positions until you get around 5k rpm.

Sounds good. If all esle fails remove the governor. We werent allowed to remove or modify it and couldnt rev higher than 5500 rpm so that always worked for me.

the governor manipulates the throttle arm yes which does close down the throttle blade killing air flow and fueling yes.

Will I was shown this by another racer and just have used those locations since I know they work for what I need them to do. If I get my mychron tach back on the kart I will move the spring around and see what different RPM readings I get for each location. If you emulate my setup you should get around 5000 rpm. We try to run the predators at 4800 rpm because that's where they make peak hp. They really fall off the power bad after that without mods.

Will Trauan, I did this mod on my predator and put in 10.8 springs and it revs like a champ. I've got mine turning about 6k and it would go more, but I'm afraid the rod won't take it. I consider it a time bomb as is.

Chris Haskell yes or tie the governor arm that comes out the top.of the crank case so it cant rotate and contact the crank internally.

+Kart I have stock valve springs on my predator 212 and have unhooked and secured the governor from moving but I am still only seeing 3600rpm, +/- a few hundred. do you think my stock springs are floating early? Idk what else it could be. it's like the governor is still intact. the predator 212 is on my vintage mini bike. both jets have been re-jetted, custom throttle linkage, no air filter, e3 spark plug, 1/2" to 3/4" to 1" custom header 8" length. I have not advanced the timing or swapped out oem valve springs, and have not replaced the stock e tube. finally, I am running a TAV20, do you think that could be limiting my rpm's? I would appreciate any input you can offer edit: I just read some more comments, one mentioning the throttle. I have verified that my custom throttle linkage is swinging the carb to WOT

Wesley Jackson thats pretty weird indeed. you should see atleast 5000 rpm at minimum. does it hold a steady 3600 rpm or does it kind of surge and buck a little at the top end of the rpm?

no surge, just tops out at 3498rpm, so apparently I'm not even seeing full stock rpm

If your TAV has an overdrive function you just might be running out of engine at that RPM at top speed. The engine simply does not have enough power to spin any faster with the given load and final drive ratio. What's your max RPM with the back wheel off the ground with no load? If it is 5000+ off the ground then you have a gearing issue. If it is still only 3498 then look at your engine.

The predators are coming setup like this out of the factory though. I guess I'm a little confused. I went to go try this out on my mini bike and this is already where the springs are at, then checked two of my buddies mini bikes and this was where their springs were at. None of us have touched those linkages at all. I guess I'll play around with moving them into other positions and see what happens.
