Great video. For those wondering. I have the 6500/5500 model. My house is 2300sf and all electric. Deep well, heat pump, fridge, deep freeze etc. It can run everything in my home, just not all at the same time. I leave the stove off always. It easily runs my 2.5 ton ac (hard start Installed) but I’d never try the heat as it is clearly to much wattage for my unit. All my lights are now led. These predators are a great value. My last 4K model lasted 5 years and always started 1st pull, sold it and got the 6500 and this one has 60+ hours so far with last years outages and worked perfectly.

I bought this same generator for my primary back up generator for my house. Had a disconnect installed and now when the power goes out I have power. Runs the whole house great. I do shut the hot water tank off after I start to use it. I had noticed a big draw when it kicked on but I have changed out my old ancient water heater so who knows if it will be less drawing. Power did go out since then but I again just flip the heater off just because I don't need the hot water during this time usually. I have had to power up back up power at least 6 times so it is a nice set up to have

Ok, that was a better test. My house, unfortunately is all electric, and living on the gulf coast, I have a heat pump. Not sure of the power draw on it, and it's used for both heat and AC so I'd have to figure that out. As you've found out, doing some load shed is good, make a chart of what you can run together and what you can't. As I said on the other video, I have the 2kw version of this I use for my portable HAM Radio stuff, and I love that little Generator. Its big brother seems to do ok as well.

Electric water heaters running on 240vac have two elements but they are never on at the same time. If they were both on at the same time, it would require a 50+ amp breaker. The lower element is the primary to heat the incoming cold water, upper is secondary. Water heaters that run on 240vac use elements that are 4500-5500 watts each. That's about 65%-75% of your generator's running watts.
@craighellberg62695 жыл бұрын
OMG Sir. That is exactly the information I have been looking for. I was not sure if both elements were on at the same time. My heater is rated at 4500/3500 for but upper and lower element but then it says max 4500/3500. I purchased 8000/10,000 W generator. So I believe that if everything else in the house was turned off and I was just running the water heater that it would handle it just fine. Would you agree? Thank you for your time.
@danburch99895 жыл бұрын
@@craighellberg6269 The 8000 watt generator will run the water heater (5000 watts) plus a refrigerator (700 watts) and possibly a freezer (700 watts) and a water pump (500 watts) at the same time along with a few lights. The thing you need to watch for is the surge draw of the appliances with motors (refrigerators/freezers/furnaces/AC etc). That can be as much as 3x the running watts. As long as they don't all start at the same time, the 10,000 watt surge rating of the generator will be ok. That's why you turn on individual loads separately so that the surge isn't exceeded.

@danburch99894 жыл бұрын
@@gene2200 The generator manufacturers tend to advertise the surge ratings nad not the run ratings. Generators aren't designed to run but for a few seconds at the surge rating. Anything with a motor is an inductive load that requires a large current surge (watts) of 3x-5x the running watts to start up the motor.

Great videos. I just bought the same generator and installed it identical, to your setup. I had an electrician install the interlock device and the receptacle. My house is 100% electric, including the furnace. something that I was not aware of, when I purchased the generator, but I think is very important to share with the readers, is amperage. Yes, the generator is rated at 7250/9000 watts, however, the 240v receptacle is limited to 30 amps. The amperage limits the available wattage, through the house connection, to 3300/6600 watts, depending on the voltage (110/220v). In hindsight, for that reason, I could have gotten by with a little bit smaller of a generator. The only advantage to this larger unit is being able to run additional outlets at the same time as you run the 220v 30amp outlet. I've read that the 220v outlet is rated for 37 peak amps. I'm not exactly sure what that means. The electrician told me that we should try to limit the draw to 80% of the amperage limit (24 amps) as much as possible. By no means do I claim to be an expert at this I am just passing on what I was told by my installer. If you look at the 220v outlet, it is in fact rated for 30 amps max. Again, great video. I'd love to chat with you, since we have very similar setups and the same predator genie. Feel free to reach out. My email is 876tony@gmaíl.com. thanks!

Think my water heater is 4500 watts. Not sure what size you have, but you may have a heavier load on there than you think. I run a similar setup as you minus the well pump. I turn off all 220V breakers and only use one breaker/220V power consumer at a time and that's on a 10KW generator. If just using 120V items I kill all my 220V breakers and just feed half of the house 120V circuits. I can still run my furnace fan, LED and CFL lights, ceiling fans on low, 2 fridges, and a TV on a 2KW inverter generator simply to be easier on fuel and quieter than the big generator. Great video and keep it up. Nice setup you have there! Keep warm.

Don’t forget about the generator safety rules: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. This is only a reminder. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. It is important to keep your children safe especially little ones. The portable generator can be hot during an operation. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running.
