Question for you.... What about when you use the linking verb "smells"? That ice cream smells like chocolate. Is "like" a preposition? No, because chocolate is not smelling the way (as in an action) the way that ice cream smells (with it's nose). It is specifying the way that it smells like. It is a simile. So, is "smells" the linking verb, and "like chocolate" a prep. phrase acting as a direct object?
