What a really great video Bob! People are really going to benefit from your knowledge and willingness to share it.

In 1986 I had a 50 inch Sony ( with the flip out mirror ) it had a built in signal generator that gave you the cross hatch pattern to align the 3 color picture tubes, talk about going nuts, you had height linearity and making three colors turn the grid to a white pattern

Magnets on a stick are absolutely a thing. I've used them on mono and color computer monitors. Sometimes you don't even need a magnet, just a piece of metal! The lid from a to-go container makes a great "stick".

I meant magnets with a sticky backing you could glue on the CRT or inside the housing. Is that what you mean?
@compu852 жыл бұрын
@@bandersentv I have some terminal monitors with that too... little magnet chunks stuck on the CRT bell. When I make my own "touch up" magnets, I took some weak fridge magnets (the large, flat kind) and used some gaffer tape to attach them to the strip of plastic. Then taped the plastic to the CRT bell.

It seems many people unfamiliar with vintage TVs think that because of the Gee-Whiz cabinets that Predictas were top of the line electronically, when they were really middle of the road. In fact the short form CRTs probably sacrificed the image uniformity.

I don't know about that. Seems as good or better than most. The short form became common after the Predictas. The first gen rectangular from 1950 have really bad geometry.

These sets aren't that different from the suitcase portables of the day. I've had a few of those and was able to get decent pictures on them. I also had a 21 inch Canadian Philips console, that I managed do dial in a nice picture on. The Philips actually had horizontal linearity magnets on both sides of the yoke. Never had to touch them, though.

As far as screen geometry, I think the real problem was the short yoke that was needed for the short gun. It wasn't the tube itself but the magnetic field.

Nice video Bob. Plenty of detail. I too connect the jumper lead on the ringing coil with the set off. I usually use 2 jumper leads and connect them together, then disconnect them and adjust the slug. then turn off the set and remove both jumpers. I arced the jumper one time and learned my lesson.
@bandersentv2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Good idea about the jumper leads. I'll do that next time. Have you managed to get a "floating" image when the coil is jumpered?
@cristrigotti99332 жыл бұрын
@@bandersentv Yeah, I have. It's hard to describe. If you went a littler further after it unlocked, that's the "floating" image I usually use. After adjustments, I can turn the H Hold control from one end to the other and the picture won't unlock. That's when i know I have the H adjustments correct.

Quick unrelated question: what is your preferred product for protecting a radio or tv internal metal chassis after removing rust. Nothing? a wax polish? Something else?I'm sure you must have mentioned this in the years of videos watched, but I can't remember it al :)

Hey Bob, is there a common cause for a vertical white line through the image on my predicta? It moves left to right horizontally as I adjust the horizontal. Thanks for your time
@bandersentv Жыл бұрын
As best I know it's a result of slight changes to the NTSC standards since these sets were made and a common issues with 1950s B&W sets. Here is an exhaustive discussion on the topic: www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=172667
