As a Villa fan, the "losing Luiz is terrible - he was an amazing player" is a sentiment that is true perhaps 50% of the time. He was very inconsistent for us, especially in Europe and his form once Kamara got injured was pretty bad. By the end of the season, Tielemans was putting in consistent 8/10's for us and was far more influential than Luiz. Not to say I wanted to sell Luiz, far from it, but the amount of people acting like he was some generational midfielder feels like hyperbolic stick to beat Villa with and a reason we'll finish further down the table. I think it's interesting as a big thing we have done is fill out the squad with both young (Maatsen, Onana, Barranachea) but also experienced (Barkley) players to make rotation easier whilst maintaining a very strong core of players (Martinez, Konsa, Pau, McGinn, Bailey, Watkins). I also think Emery is being underrated massively, now that Klopp is gone, there is a perfectly reasonable argument that he is the second best manager in the league behind Pep. Do I think we'll reasonably finish 4th again, probably not, but I do think we will finish above the likes of Man U and Chelsea. I'd say 6th would be a more accurate placement, but yh the difference between 6th and 8th could well be 3 points of whatever so is what it is. Good show lads :)

Yeah its a shame. Its an all time team that people are quickly forgetting because covid affected like their final 10 games. Liverpool were one of the most dominant teams ever in the 18/19 season and the majority of 19/20. I think they won every league game in 2019 besides a 2-1 loss to fellow all time great team Man City and a 1-1 draw to rivals United. That 26 out of 27 games won by Liverpool in 19/20 was something unbelievable especially when they thrashed 2nd place Leicester near xmas.

@Foxtrot6624 26 күн бұрын
@@haha_ok_sure The thing is, he’s not totally incorrect about that aspect. Typically, in order to succeed in the modern premier league, you don’t just need elite players and an elite manager, you also need elite structure and a club vision to make sure all the players you recruit are able to play the way the coach wants to. Chelsea have such staggering depth so they should eventually be able to assemble a consistently fit and high quality team regardless of the lack of long term vision and coaches style, but they absolutely must be allowed time to figure out how best to use the massive pool of players. For whatever reason, I believe Bohley believes that sacking Poch and paying the compensation is worth it because it will somehow lead to his player investments be worth more than the sacking fee if Poch was around, same with Potter. The guy just has no sporting ambition outside of banking on football inflation increasing more than the stock market.

@@hnaku87484th is a massive call. Spurs lost 7 of their last 8 games last season. They couldn't possibly fall off that badly again. And United WILL be better this year, because they can't be much worse and they have brought in players in areas they needed. You still have Villa, and a possible push from another team.You'd have to assume top 3 is set in stone, so you'd have four teams fighting for 4th, with Chelsea being the only ones with a new manager and tactics to adapt to,AGAIN. Also, just to add. With a squad that size, injuries is absolutely NOT a viable excuse,especially when most of theose players are around the same level. Every team has injuries of varying importance. Man City lost De Bruyne for 6 months and Haaland was out for a month or more too. Liverpool were demolished by injuries too. Both teams that finished well above Chelsea.
@hnaku8748
@hnaku8748 26 күн бұрын
@@silverheart7964 Chelsea were affected worse than Spurs. Chelsea also lost 1 out of last 15 PL games. So clearly the current squad aren't absolutely as dire as some outsiders make it to be. Many have underestimated the impact injuries had, Chelsea were among the worst affected and quite a few were to key players. Reece James and Nkunku were out most of season and only returned during that end of season run. Lavia got 30 mins at the start and then was completely out whole season. Cucurella missed 17 overall games with ankle surgery. Enzo was playing with injections, and only got proper treatment close to end of season when it was evidently affecting performances. Similar issues in defence where Fofana was out entire season, while others were inconsistent in appearance too. The 'depth' like Carney and Ugochukwu were also out long term. New manager was there last season too, who many didn't rate. People miss out such contexts. I'm not saying Chelsea are definitely finishing top 4, that's unpredictable. But to say it's a big call is silly, when points wise the difference wasn't much between the nearby teams.

I'd say it did just by the fact we're in our third Premier League season with a squad far better than what got us promoted. - Giggling about "£40m for Elliott Anderson" when the fee was actually £35m ..... which can then be reduced even further if you take away the £15-£20m Newcastle paid for Vlachodimos. - "PSR comes in to play" .... oh well, it's lucky we have two of the Prems hottest prospects in MGW and Murrilo, nevermind others

Other persistent injuries to squad players too. Newcastle had UCL last season, they are without Europe this time. Injuries affected them as well.

I think Newcastle might be going to surprise some people with coming out collectively better, despite not obviously strengthening the squad massively. The squad is a touch older, yes, but in a way that might reduce value but actually improve performance. They underperformed their underlying numbers last year (i.e. were 'unlucky') and also have as much claim to having last season stymied by injury as anyone in the league and I just think Howe is so good at the psychological manipulation to get the best out of his players that I think last season will be an impious to push on rather than fall off. I also think Howe is a micromanager who is so much better when he has a full week to prepare for games.

Thats a very bad take. Vicario isnt the issue, its utter lack of support he has around him. You go to the FA cup vs City, where City score in final minutes. In 6 yard area when corner was taken, there were just 3 city players & 7 Spurs player. And Vicario was blocked by Diaz so brazenly with none of the 7 spurs player even not knowing about the block. Ball goes up, Ake attacks. None of the 7 pick him up. When Vicario tries to cover, Diaz just stands in way. Goal. Thats been pattern of play - even if Vicario isnt tall, problem could be easily solved by proper organization. Unfortunately for Spurs, Ange doesnt even acknowledge the issue and its the one thing his Spurs career will die on.

For everyone unsure about Chelsea - they finished 6th last season, under a system that didn’t suit most players (bar Palmer and Gallagher), were constantly bailed out by Palmer, and had one of the worst injury situations in all of Europe. This season they have an admittedly inexperienced manager in Maresca but one that plays football that suits most of these players, have signed some good options like Neto (and maybe Osimhen), and have Lavia and Nkunku basically as new players. If the injury situation stays in control which it has in the preseason (something that didn’t happen last year), given the quality of their depth, they will only be better. I expect 5th place, but I wouldn’t be shocked with a finish on 4th.

I think United trying to sell McTominay and bring in Ugarte maybe a risky move, and that’s where the quality of squad depth would matter, however, for this season with the defensive and forward reinforcements, it’s most of what can realistically happen. A proper 6 to cover for Casemiro‘s injuries and game time would be crucial and if Collyer and Amass get minutes and good game improvements, McTominay‘s move away maybe a good decision for him and the club in the long term.

I mean, which part of signing Lenny Yoro (a defender with immense recovery speed ideal for playing a higher line,) Joshua Zirkzee (a highly technical forward who thrives in a false 9 position), and Mathias De Ligt (an Ajax-schooled defender who can control the play with his range of passing) suggests United are just going to sit deep and try to hit opponents on the counter all season?

I see Forest on the up this season. Last season, there were points deductions, a serious of terrible referreeing calls, and a crazy number of goals conceded from set pieces. This summer, they seem to to be ok for PSR, they look like they're addressing the set piece issue, and they've hung onto their best players. Instead of it being the crazy spendathon from the couple of summers, this summer has been about smaller tweaks to an established nucleus. In contrast, many of the mid-table teams who finished above them last season have lost a number of top players - Palace have lost Olise, Bournemouth have lost Solanki, Fulham have lost Palhinha and Wolves have lost Neto. They all will need to make a major adjustment as a result. Who knows, maybe Brentford will be added to that list if Toney goes.
