I was diagnosed with HELLP Syndrome on my first pregnancy last year and so I had to get an emergency c-section at 30 weeks😢 Now I am scared to have another baby in the future. The doctors had to put me on magnesium twice after I gave birth and gave me medication to lower my BP. It was the most scariest thing I’ve ever experienced.

Thank you! This was so helpful and really put my mind at ease. I had gestational hypertension at the very end of my pregnancy and postpartum preeclampsia, but hearing about the risk factors let me know that I actually had 3 of the moderate risk factors (I didn’t know about my family history until I got it! Good reminder to always check on that.) and wasn’t on an aspirin regimen. My doctor has already spoken to me about doing that next time around and hearing about both the rate of recurrence based on late term presentation and the reduced risk using aspirin has reduced my anxiety quite a bit.

So informative, thank you! Where does severe gestational HTN fall along the continuum? I was induced at 37, required mag during L&D and 24 hrs, DCed on HTN meds, and ER visit one week pp. Was able to wean meds after 2 weeks pp. Never any proteinuria but required intervention so just unsure where that falls. Side note - was very motivated to continue breast feeding when I learned it helped reduce future CVD (and all the other great things). Knowing how breast feeding helped me long term, in addition to benefits to baby, played a big role in getting us to 12 months. People have said it's selfish but there's nothing wrong with being encouraged by maternal health benefits of breast feeding.

Severe gestational HTN would be a more severe form of a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy, and that's another great benefit of breastfeeding! Congrats!

This was great! What would be considered “late in pregnancy” to get preeclampsia? I had it at 36 weeks and did not have to get on magnesium but it did take about 2 weeks for my blood pressure to go back down after delivery. Mine was so strange too bc I had NONE of the typical symptoms (headache, vision issues, severe swelling, etc.) just high BP and protein in the urine.
@dr.martaperez3 жыл бұрын
That would be relatively late as it's in the last month of pregnancy, compared to at say, 28 weeks which would be much earlier.

I have been recommended baby aspirin by my OB to prevent pre eclampsia but I don't know whether to take it. I'm 20 weeks along and have a high BMI and first pregnancy. I'm nervous to not take it, if I can save myself the risk. But I am also scared to take it as my pregnancy has gone great so far, no high blood pressure and I'm worried I'll cause a problem by taking it. Daily baby aspirin all the way to delivery feels extreme. Some studies seem to suggest risk of bleeding may be more than low and that concerns me. Is it still worth me considering?

I believe I have this or am at high risk to get it but my OB’s completely dismiss me. I am only 17 weeks so I assume that is why, but I know that it IS possible to develop preeclampsia before 20 weeks, just rare. Rare doesn’t mean impossible. I have had random high blood pressure readings since becoming pregnant that I’ve never had when I wasn’t pregnant or in previous pregnancies. I have had protein detected in my urine that again I’ve never had that detected before I became pregnant or in any other pregnancies. I recently been getting daily headaches that don’t go away with Tylenol. Yesterday I’ve had one of the worst headaches I’ve ever had in my life that hasn’t gone away to this day. It hurt so bad that it was so difficult to fall back asleep every time I woke up in the middle of the night. I also have an autoimmune disease called psoriasis and PsA. Everything has been dismissed by my OB office. The HBP they said “maybe you were nervous” I wasn’t. I had no reason to be nervous for a routine prenatal apt. The protein in my urine they said “you could have been dehydrated” I wasn’t. I drink 4-6 16.9fl oz of water every single day. I told them, They told me to try increasing my water intake. 101.4 oz of water and you’re telling me I could be dehydrated? It’s almost comical. I told them I have an autoimmune disease called psoriasis and the OB said that psoriasis doesn’t count, I guess it’s not in their category of autoimmune diseases lol. For this strong headache I’ve never experienced before thats lasted all day, over night and onto the next day; they told me to try caffeine. I didn’t want coffee so they said to try Coca Cola. That didn’t help so they now want me to try Excedrin Migraine and if that doesn’t help to go to the ER.

Let say I was closed or had preclamsia during my first pregnant and mybob did not see it or somehow it went undetected , what would happened to my baby if I was never treated for it? Now reason why I'm asking and trying to get that question answered is because I'm on my second pregnancy and apparently my blood flow isn't doing well and I'm on aspiring and doc Said it was weird my first pregnancy went well (apparently) and now my second I am some how close to this so called "preclampsia " and on top of that none of the factors like having a relative who had preclampsia etc applies to me, so is that means you guys are wrong or my ob before didn't do well her job and what are the symptoms or outcome from having an undetected preclamsia during my first pregnancy for my baby(now she's a toddler) and me?

You look amazing for being so newly post partum! Thanks for the video. It was really interesting to hear that severe hyperT disorders in pregnancy can indicate higher likelihood of CV disease in future. Are there other conditions that are "windows to the future"? My first pregnancy was routine (other than bad nausea for first 20 wks) till 39 weeks when I got Bell's Palsy. I was told the Bell's was just bad luck and it shouldn't happen again..
@dr.martaperez3 жыл бұрын
Bells Palsy is not, it's usually a random event or a post-viral syndrome. But another example of "window to the future" is gestational diabetes, which raises the risk of type 2 diabetes in the future.

I've heard a lot about proper blood volume expansion and getting enough nutrients to prevent preeclampsia. Do doctors not mention that because they aren't nutritionist?

Blood volume expansion happens in each pregnancy and does not depend on nutrition. There is no nutrient that specifically prevents preeclampsia, though of course each person should try to eat nutritiously.

@@dr.martaperez there was a ton of research in the 60s by Dr. Brewer that suggested increased salt and protein during pregnancy decreased the chances of preeclampsia.

@SavingwithSaraEllis2 жыл бұрын
@@dr.martaperez regarding salt intake or protein? Do you reccomend limiting salt?
@LibraryLady9292 жыл бұрын
@@SavingwithSaraEllis Limiting salt will not affect the development of preeclampsia. She sort-of explains this in, I believe, the first video, where she talks about hypertensive disorders in pregnancy having to do with the development of the placenta and the blood vessels in that. Basically, current medical theories around preeclampsia state that it occurs due to a likely autoimmune reaction to the cells from the father that help make up the placenta. Normally, a woman's body will suppress the immune system to allow the placenta to implant into the uterus. But sometimes that doesn't happen, and that is thought to be how preeclampsia develops. This whole process happens around 4-6 weeks or so into a pregnancy, so basically before a woman even knows she's pregnant. When the placenta is not allowed to implant deeply enough in the uterus, it therefore cannot receive enough blood as the fetus grows. So after 20 weeks as the fetus gets larger and requires more blood, the woman's body cannot handle that and it sets off a whole cascade of events that lead to preeclampsia. If you want more information about this aspect, I HIGHLY recommend looking into information from the Preeclampsia Foundation. They do phenomenal work and education about this specific condition. (I'm a survivor of sudden, severe preeclampsia at 29 weeks. I was hours, if not minutes, away from a stroke when I arrived at the hospital.) As for the Brewer's diet: because preeclampsia is caused by the placenta not implanting deeply enough and blood flow to the placenta is compromised, diet will not help. Brewer's research was severely flawed and if you really look into it, you will see this. The Preeclampsia Foundation has a whole, long discussion thread that they link to on their website that provides more details. Suffice it to say, diet will not help the condition AT ALL. And frankly, it is extremely insulting to imply that myself and other survivors could have prevented what happened to us by simply eating better. Many survivors were extremely healthy when they developed preeclampsia. In fact, Serena Williams had it, and she's a world-class athlete! It is hurtful to suggest that we could have prevented something that caused us to nearly die by simply bothering to eat a specific diet, that, by the way, isn't even really that healthy as the amount of protein it calls for puts an enormous strain your kidneys and liver which are already strained. It's possible that following the Brewer's Diet can make preeclampsia worse for women who are destined to develop it due to how the placenta implanted and the stress that preeclampsia puts on a woman's kidneys and liver. With the placenta implanting so early in pregnancy, there is ZERO that diet could do to prevent preeclampsia. Please be mindful of your words and considerate of what you are saying. Thank you.
