Zach and I sat down to answer some of the questions you all have been dying to know. And we get to hear a little bit of the father's side of things during pregnancy.

The father’s role isn’t useless, it’s priceless during labor and delivery. Their support and presence is vital! When I was having contractions and getting my epidural my husband held me and it calmed me down tremendously. Our bond was much stronger after each delivery because of his support. So don’t feel useless, dads!!

Yeah, my hubby felt really helpless and useless when our first was born. I’m hoping the circumstances will be better this time and he will be able to get in and be more hands on 😊 It really helps a man to have something tangible to be able to do!

MyTwoCents yes I definitely agree! My husband helped me so much during the labor. He even helped the nurse hold my legs while I was pushing. It was awesome having him so involved and ready to do whatever he needed to do to help.

They made my husband leave the room when they were doing mine🥺 my husband was working the day I was giving birth so I was in active labor for like 5 hours without him and I literally just cried the entire time nonstop. Until he got there. Everyone tried calling me down but I just needed him

I agree with the husband’s biggest role is being your “voice” during labour. As your birth partner your husband has to be your advocate and communicator during those moments when you’re screaming. My husband was amazing at that during my labour, and when we ended up having an emergency c-section he made sure I didn’t end up on one of those “botched medical procedures” shows where they leave a instrument or something inside you by accident lol😂. Once baby was born he was an advocate for him too, since I was too out of it and shaky to voice anything. Dads, it might feel that you’re useless when we are in pain and you can’t help, but just know that you are TOTALLY useful,. Just having someone we trust to advocate for us in those moments creates a crazy strong bond forever between you and your wife!

My husband was pretty useless during my labour. He had no idea how to help and so he freaked out and did hardly anything. I was happy that he was there but he couldn’t talk for me even though he knew what I wanted because we hardly understood what was going on. I felt so alone and ended up with ptsd from birth trauma. You are lucky to have had a supportive husband. I have been wondering what to do for the next labour, perhaps I should find a birth doula.

@@katrinagross1637 yes, you should definitely invest into a doula! DONA is a great website to find one. We had a baby shower where we asked for money instead of gifts and used a chunk of the money to hire a doula. Doulas not only advocate for you and help you, but they will also guide your husband to support you in how you want to be supported!☺️

My husband would make up songs he would sing to my our baby and talk to her about everything, he would tell her things about taking her places, teaching how to hunt for dinosaurs and so on when she was still in the womb. The bond was so strong to the point where the baby would do turns, flips and kicks when she knew her dad was home. I didn't even know he was home until he walks through the front door runs towards me and holds my belly. And I would be like huh that explains everything. RIght on the dot as soon as he is either parked in the drive way or walks into the front door and he hasn't even said a word she would already be kicking like crazy. There would be days where he came home later and no flips or kicks and its like the baby knew her dad wasn't home yet, my little alarm letting me know when my husband would be home. He would give my stomach small raspberry kisses just for her, when she was born and a few months old she loved giving her dad raspberry kisses on his cheeks.

I'll have to disagree with Zach there on the labor support - dads have lots of opportunity to help. My hubby was HUGE in both of our birth experiences, we had home births both times and he helped me relax a lot in early labor (he played worship music for us to sing to while I labored in the shower), brought me drinks, cold cloths for my forehead, he did a ton of counter pressure on my lower back when later on, and he was a solid presence when I was in transition, in the thick of labor land, he was amazing in reminding me to relax my body through the contractions and not to fight them. He repeated my affirmations to me, held my hand, physically held me up when I was too weak to hold myself. Then when I was pushing he was in the birth pool behind me doing perineal support, and caught our baby (both times). I LOVED how big of a role he played in our births, and it was definitely an experience we both were so involved in. It was truly amazing and a huge bonding experience for both of us! So to other future parents/dads.. don't resign yourself to being a passive observer of the situation, you can be extremely involved if you want to and advocate for it!

Fortunately, most babies that come really fast are super healthy! So if you do have a "car-baby" everything should be totally fine. And cords wrapped around the neck occurs in 30% of births! Its actually super common and not a big deal because babies are not getting oxygen through their lungs yet, but the cord blood. I had a super fast delivery with my first and will be calling my midwife the second I get my first contraction with this pregnancy. Best of luck!

It's actually very important if you hemmorage to ensure that your uterus is clear and the blood is not clotting. The last thing you would want would be to get home and THEN have all that blood poor out of you and hemmorage at home. In a controlled environment (in a hospital or home with midwives) it can be monitored and treated if need be. An alternative to abdominal palpations would actually be your provider shoving their arm/hand through your vagina, into your uterus to scoop out any reminisce. It's barbaric and poses all sorts of risks, so fundal massage is the safer, preventative option and is the standard for care in Canada. Personally, I would much rather experience the bulk of my bleeding (ESPECIALLY if I was experiencing a PP hemmorage) in a hospital.

I find it funny when he talks about how the husband is only there for mental support. I had homebirths with all three of my babies, and my first two my husband was the one who “delivered” the baby, as my midwife didn’t make it til after baby was born. The third time, we called the midwife right away. Everything went perfectly though, there’s nothing like meeting your baby for the first time in the privacy of our own home, just the two of us.

@@lROct hey, the husband put the baby there, the least he can do is deliver the package 🤪 Everyone would give my husband so much praise for catching our babies, and the fact he did it without the help of a midwife, or anyone, and I’m just over here like, I think I did most of the work🤔🤣

same girl same! we had 2 home births and my hubby was SUPER involved. our midwives were very hands off (we were rocking it great on our own) and it was so so good. An amazing bonding experience to just go fully into it together and for him to catch both my babies.. sometimes he forgets and says he *delivered* both our kids and I shoot him a look 🙄 he CAUGHT our babies, I delivered them!

Going from two to three children is a much bigger shock and increase in workload than you would expect. You think you're prepared since you already have two, but you're not. I don't say this to be negative, but so that you prepare yourself.

I’m 36 weeks with our first and my husband hasn’t been allowed to any of my appointments or ultrasounds because of COVID. My husband actually thought of going to a 3rd party ultrasound clinic so we could find out baby’s gender together and it was so much less expensive than I thought it would be. It was wonderful because he got to see baby and hear her heartbeat and we got about 30-45 minutes of just watching baby and enjoying the experience. I would highly suggest it to anyone whose husband or partner is not allowed in the doctor’s office.

Heard multiple times having 3 kids is the hardest... So, if the circumstances are right, do cross that bridge and have a fourth one, it gets easier! (kids being of an age when they can actually look after the others, help, etc) You're doing so great, love your family!:)
