In the late 90s during high school Brian Welch was a personal hero of mine and inspired me to play guitar. It broke my heart when he left KoRn, but the fact that he did it to clean himself up and now he’s just so energetic and full of life again makes me so happy. So many great musicians pass on early because of overdose or suicide. The fact KoRn is still going strong, I’m very proud of these guys. I never got to superstar status but I at least got good enough where I’ve been in some great bands and got to play some large shows. Times I will never forget, now I’m just an average working stiff but I still write and play music as a hobby.

Head and Munkey are underrated in terms of their contributions to metal, IMO. Like he said, they were searching for 7 strings and playing detuned, low ass riffs when many players were wearing flannel and trying to sound like Nirvana.

yeah i agree these two have the greatest guitar playing dynamic. i honestly hate metal. no offense to you metal fans but its a shit genre... u need to slow it down, get the drummer and bass player to get a real groove and then you can have two guitar legends like head and munky work their magic. korn is the best band ever better than radiohead better than the roots

You look at the pedalboard of this guys and I saw the pedal board of Tom Morello in this channel as well. You hear the sounds they make and you imagine this U2 Edge kind of complicated rag and then realize is mainly a few very old, simple, cheap pedals and a lot of fun and creativity with them. This guys of Korn may not be the best players out there but they definitely set up a very define style and sound that inspire thoundsends over the year. Yet another example of "is not what you have but what you do with it" Good for them.

Oh these guys are waaaay better than you think. Munky side project Venera sounds like it would be an organ/moog/synth textures but he is getting that out of his guitar and Head was laying Van Halen solos since he was teen. it always somewhat surprised me that their guitars never sported active EMG pickups instead of your standard passive pickups. Especially because they tune a whole step down. I think the reason why I've always wondered this mainly because I recall an article where they described how muddy their heavy tones were to record during the first record, and that was essentially attributed to the pickup technology not being where it needed to decrease the mud in the signal.

As a long time fan and equally guitar nerdy as them Thing I like most about their guitar sound is that Korn's tone has a certain growl to it that some folks tuning lower don't even get.
@northtimo666
@northtimo666 3 жыл бұрын
One big key to that growl is using whammy pedal’s -1 octave setting and having that track in the center of the records. It is hilariously low, but gives you that thick tone.

NorthTimo hmm not sure about that but I'll try that thanks! I thought they used the whammy pedal for all that haunting lead work

Mess Boogie should make Fieldy a signature M-2000 head. All with same specs. He has used those heads since 1995 Life is Peachy album. I met him back stage on life is Peachy tour and he told me they are the best heads ever built and he still plays through them to this day. Thats dedication.

My new favorite interviewer, John Bollinger, Rebecca was good too, but dudes were sometimes self conscious around her. John makes them comfortable and I feel like I am hearing the interviewee better, Hell, John gives them the damn mic, these are down to earth interviews people, thanks John. Meanwhile John can play some down to earth guitar too. I loved Rebecca but these interviews have me coming away wit more information. Thanks John.

@@vxrdrummer Tbh it always was kind of "his" band, at least he's the one who gets the ball rolling. But all the others bring their own thing to make it come together as Korn. Just think how much the songs changed since Head came back and Jon is just one in a million.

Good to know this guy invented the volute that have been on instruments like violins for centuries... Glad you and Ibanez were on that there... I'm sure he asked for something vague like "Hey you know how Gibson break at the neck... We should not do that man, we should invent something to fix it" and Ibanez were just like "Uhh, you mean a neck volute? Sure, easy enough..."

For the genre they play... how long they've played it and with age and life experiences they all seem to dig who they are and playing in what has to be borderline classic rock at this point thats whats up... im 35 right now and if i walked into a concert and saw them playing freak on a leash i would instantly feel like i was elementary school and that would kick ass

Horrible pedal. Use a Tube-screamer on top of your amp gain set at about 8-9 then run the Tubescreamer or OD-808 or TS-9 with the gain set low and tone all the way up. It will give you a LOT more definition and bite. Go through a Noise suppressor into a good tube amp and you'll never need anything else distortion wise.

I love the fact that these guys are using the same rig for the last 10-20 years...I mean, they found their sound and they stick with it. No need to have a fancy 5000$ boutique amplifier head and a 5000$ PRS guitar when you have your own style. I mean, look at Head pedalboard! It's pretty straightfoward, no fancy boutique pedals, just the same 5 pedals he's using for the last 20 years. Thumbs up for that!
