Thanks for the Ovation update from Namm PG! Fell in love with them when I played my friend's 1687 back in high school. I'm a grateful owner of an Adamas myself today along with a few other masterpieces from New Hartford. Although I love my woodbox counterparts, I must admit my Os get way more playing/recording time.

Much of Ovation's history and heritage was lost when Fender purchased the company, shutting down the New Hartford, Connecticut factory, back in 2014... I still have the first Ovation I purchased back in 1981 and an Adamas that I have gigged with since 1998, and have owned a total of 9 Ovations (and one Adamas) over the years. You can't rightfully blame Ovation for what was intentionally done to her by a company that was likely more motivated to get rid of a rival than to preserve an American icon. If memory serves me correctly, much of the machinery used in Ovation production was also lost after the New Hartford closure. Sad, really... (Imagine an Adamas NOT built in the US!...)

Impossible no to ! I bought my first Adamas I in January ( Cutaway in ‘ Reverse Blue Burst ‘ ) after a (too) many years ( read - ‘decades’ ) wait. I had an Adamas II in the mid-to-late 1980’s … had to ‘let it go’ for coin of the realm at a time of need due to a M. Mouse ‘guestimation’ of a barn conversion costs - out by £30k in ‘’88 - ‘89 - ‘90’. First heard an Adamas in 1977, the magic has never, ever left . I didn’t have the other £30k - the prices we pay for ‘ e x p e r i e n c e .’

I dunno, maybe they stopped using wood tops cuz they were ending up in second-hand guitar stores CRACKED or caved in. And really now, who plays Ovations anymore in the U S? True, they were the 'IT' guitar late 60s to maybe 1980 (and it was my first brand name instrument) but in recent years I can only think of one artist who played one with any regularity.

Mike you are right on the money. Ovation designers and engineers were out to lunch for the past decades.

Al Di Meola still using them to this day, for example

Wow can they make a more hideous looking guitar...that black Adamas model is simply pathetic. And what's with all the stupid cutaways on what basically is an acoustic guitar. This kind of boneheaded thinking is what helped feed the decline of Ovations. I loved the old Elites and Adamas models with equal size epulets on each side for symetry and great looks. Todays product is a nightmare. I love the Ovations from the 70's and 80's when they looked like real guitars.

They had a big head start on piezo transducers for live performances, but they were surpassed a LONG time ago in that niche. Ovations have that harsh piezo "quack" which is distinct, but sounds not so much like an actual acoustic instrument. Without that, they're just a funny looking guitar that's kind of awkward to play and sounds not so good unplugged.

Well people, listen to Tony Rice on the Tony Rice Unit's Backwaters album... everything but one song is played on a Ovation. Btw, at the time of his passing, Tony had two guitars : his famous Martin and a 1117 Ovation. Learn to listen, not to judge.

@stephanehuot9893 yup I agree on listening first. People are so quick to judge a guitar on looks but don't understand what goes into making a quality stage instrument that will be plugged in most of its life and see many climate changes in a week. Adamas are the best for all of these roles. I love my 3 Ovations for their sound, playability, and projection. No more "box guitars" for me.

The Adamas shape is iconic, but man they sound pretty awful compared to what else is available acoustically and that bowl shape is quite hard to play in sitting position.
