When I was in the Army in Georgia I discovered that if I got about 15 feet off the ground there would be no gnats or mosquitoes. So when we were out in the field I would go up a tree whenever I could and just hang out there. I'm sure that with a little thought I could come up with a way to sleep up in the canopy - jungle hammock maybe.

Personally when I slept outside in mosquito plagued areas I got into a bivy bag [ with or without a sleeping bag or blanket/ depending on temperature] , and covered my head with a mosquito headnet, and my hands with leather gloves; I also wore long sleeves. I sometimes slept with my torso partially out of the bag if it was too warm, that's where the gloves also came in handy. In my miss- spent youth I was often homeless and slept outside like this, for sometimes, up to 8 months out of a year. I also had a tarp to stay out of the rain, I found this combo to be lighter than carrying a tent , and to be more versatile as well.

A huge bug net to cover the whole body isn't that heavy or large. And way safer and more comfortable. Especially in hot climates or during summer.

Great idea with the fire smoking the bugs away. We used to do it too when we were little & it does work to a certain extend but furthermore inhaling smoke is not the best. Mum taught us to be prepared in any situtaion "in advance" before hitting the trail. Understand the season & location of our destination. For starters we wash all clothing with eucalyptus including backpacks. Included in our first aid box, there's a small bottle of eucalyptus oil. We also carry a bunch of lemon grass, smash it up slightly & sleep with it in your pocket, pillow etc. Some dried up chillies into the fire (coal) will also works before hitting the sack. Mosquitoes are attracted to our body heat & scent so the more we deminish it the less bites we get. We also found that dropping some eucalyptus oil into boiling water will keep bugs away plus it gives a great & pleasant aroma around camp & clear the sinus.! There are other ways too but you get our point. Cheers Mr. Salyer. Mum & Dad are still on Christmas Island, not sure whether they're taking a break from us or giving us a break from them, nevertheless it's all good but we reckon that you & JJ will love to do survival vids on the island. We're picking them up at the airport next week & expecting lots of pressies...ha!!

Green pine boughs work great. A forest service ranger came flying into my camp one time with a tank of water in the back of his truck to put out what he thought was the start of a wildfire. He wasn’t impressed!

I regularly use permethrin. Even directly applied to the skin (it's what's in lice shampoo) there is extraordinary low systemic absorption; However, our of an abundance of caution I only apply it to my boots and clothing do my contract is that much less. Still have to do tick checks ~2×/day but I rarely find one if my boots and trousers are treated. It usually lasts 3-4 washes if I use only actual soap and not detergent and only cold water, line dry. DEET is always packed for the emergency clouds of vampire insects. Smoke is nicer to be around.

I also usually tuck my pants into my boots to help control ticks, chiggers, and fire ants. Half the time I'm wearing snake boots anyway, and those make it real easy to keep your pants legs tucked in. I'm tall, so it's a challenge to keep some of my favorite outdoor pants legs tucked into regular boots. In that case, I turn my pants legs up to expose about 4 inches of the inside next to the cuff. Then I spray that also. It helps to keep hitch hikers from climbing up your boot and then into the inside of your pants leg. Underwear with very good elastic around the leg openings is a great final defense. Once you've had a pack of chiggers have their way with you, you won't think any precaution it too excessive!!! I'll take ten, maybe even 20 mosquitoe bites over one chigger. Their bites itch for days!

There's a brand called Nantucket Spider that makes a tick repellent with plant ingredients like peppermint oil and cinnamon oil that works really well at keeping away any of those small biting flies you find around the muddy wetland habitats. It doesn't really work against against mosquitoes, but for everything else in the Everglades, it's a good option.

Vanilla extract or the imitation stuff dabbed on ankles wrsts and back of neck keeps both flies and mosquitoes at bay for about 3 hours before reapplication is needed. If you get bit, crushed plantain (green round leaf weed, the banana like stuff) applied will keep the itch reasonable)

Certain medications will change your Ph levels to where mosquitos especially don't "like" your taste. They smell it off your skin, and won't bite. Blackie Thomas covered a good amount of this info on his bushcraft channel, since his stomping grounds are in Alabama, and as he says, "in my beloved South, the ground CRAWLS in the summer."

If you have the space, a Thermocell is hard to beat. I use the "dirt" scented one while bow hunting south-ish Texas. It's mosquito season 364 days a year here. It seems to keep biting flies away also. I still spray my boots and lower pants w deet though to repell ticks and chiggers. Ticks can be very thick here. I have a bottle of primthyrn I plan to try on my outerwear. My wife used to buy listerian, put it in a pump spray bottle and spray some around our patio. It seemed to work better than many other non toxic products. Avon Skin So Soft works pretty well for some blood suckers. I've had mosquitoes bite the back of my head through the mesh on some ball caps. I'm not sure what kind of neck gaiter you are wearing, but I'd try that if they can't bite through it. Our mosquitoes bite through denim pants. I have seen shirts that claim to be bite proof, but they usually only come in loud colors. Guess I need to look for one in camo.

Oh yes, I can attest to the sand flies driving you mad. When I was kayaking in the area one place we camped was particularly bad. I got in the tent, zipped up the bug net and wouldn't come out. I was willing to go without dinner. My wonderful partner at the time put up with them long enough to make dinner and brought it in the tent, so we both got to eat. But I was totally willing to just stay in the tent for the night without eating if I had to.
