Just adding one thing ... If You travel in forest or brush at night, wear a pair of clear safety glasses or yellow lens glasses or clear goggles.

Good Information .... 3:09 ...We also call that a *BARBER CHAIR* in the logging camps. Where a tree has snaped and is on a hinge, waiting to snap back, fall forwards or sideways. *A WIDOW MAKER* is when a branch or top side of a tree is hung up in the canopy. Large branches of trees and a wind can knock it down easily on your tent or self. aka: *FOOL KILLER* is a detached or broken limb or tree top that is hung up above. The name indicates that such objects can kill forest workers / Careless Camers, by falling on them, thus "making widows" of their wives. 4:55 ..When I was homeless, i always set up my shelter in the woods. I would make an African Maasai (Thorny) Branch Fence ...so when I did sleep, the unwelcome visitors would have to be funneled through a door way (path of least resitance) and set off my trip line...if they attempted to try another way, I would be alerted by the snapping of branches, followed by the cursing of words..LOL 8:25 ...🪢Slip knots are fantastic....or you can use *Nite Ize CamJams cord tightners.* 🪢🪢In all my field journals, I have to sketch out the variety of knots that are most useful in camp set ups. (Lets just agree,I am not worthy of receiving my Rope Knot Boy Scout Badge or Pin... LOL) 11:43 ... ♨HEET antifreeze burns clear but puts out an odor. ♨ Rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol/ 30% water) has a strong odor and is invisible ♨ Isopropyl alcohol has a 100% pure alcohol and different than rubbing alcohol but it too , burns clear. ♨ Lamp Oil fluid or Kerosene is another source for the alcohol stove. works great with a wick. ♨Pure Ethanol (Everclear, liquor store) ♨ Denatured alcohol / aka :methyl hydrate ...is ethyl alcohol with toxic or bad tasting additives that make it unsuitable for consumption. ♨ Bioethanol is clean which makes it an efficient and effective source of heat because there is no soot, ash or harmful emissions that need to be extracted through a flue - meaning all the heat stays in your room. ♨Pure Methanol..the simplest form of alcohol. It is closely related to ethanol, the type of alcohol normally found in beer, wine and spirits - but much more toxicethanol ♨ White Gas or Gasoline 11:52 ... I wouldn't be able to sleep well, due to the fact , that there is a clear path behind my shelter...I would atleast put a carpet perimeter of snap branches 20 ft and 15 ft around the area, and a perimeter trip line for secondary alarm. Most times, I would have an exit strategy , just in case , someone, decided to toss a fire on my shelter. 14:36 .. one thing I learned from my nite hunt days/ looking for shot game, is we always carry a lightweight walking stick, so we can detect small roots, branches and even shrubs while walking through the bush...we would flash our low lights quickly , get a bearing and turn it off and head in the direction we want. Repeat and continue. I enjoyed your video alot today....thank you , Jason and gratitudes to your film crew. Well done. Cheers. Be Safe.

Just found the channel. Refreshing to see someone putting out correct and accurate content. I spent 28 years in the Army and then 10 years with a PMC. I teach SERE tactics and survival for a couple of Federal agencies and some state law enforcement. I mention that because it's rare I come across a channel that is giving good info to their subscribers. The one thing I would humbley like to add is, I prefer to use and I teach recommending the use of solid fuel tablets over any other source including alcohol. Even in the best container alcohol evaporates and if you spill some or all of it your screwed. In addition, you can see from your video how it burns with a flame that produces way more of a heat signature then solid fuel elements. I also have found through trial and error that solid fuel tablets tend to last longer and are easier to light in freezing or subzero temperatures. You can carry more solid fuel tablets then you can alcohol fuel and even if its wet it will still light. It also produces almost no heat or light signature, doesnt flame, and has no odor. That's all I wanted to add. Again, I appreciate your knowledge level and for allowing me to add to your already stellar video. Happy hunting everyone! Stay safe. Stay prepared and be ready.

Talking about vison at night - I hadn't thought about it till now, but when I was a kid - WOW! I could see really well in the dark. Places I won't tread now in the dark without a light, I used to go without hesitation in my youth. The aging thing has its effects.

I kept myself warm when it was damn near freezing in my shelter by just using a couple of tea lights since I didn't have my campfire set up yet in a covert enough way for night. Now, I'm pretty stealthy at my fort because, the other week, the police came flying over in their helicopter low, they circled my fort basically exactly and I had a fire going at the time. It was daytime then but I was still afraid they were after me since it's completely illegal for me to have built a fort anywhere but my own property around here and I don't happen to own any property right now so I snuck into a small patch of urban woodland to build my fort. Anyway, I thought that I was going to get murdered by the police that day but I decided to stay as hidden and still as I could and make them work for it. Turns out they were after someone on the road that is maybe 1000 feet from my fort but I had no way to know that and they definitely flew all around my fort when I had a fire going and didn't see a damn thing. I always feel like my fort is obvious but maybe it's only obvious to those who know where it is. Hell, the first time I came from a different direction to it, I didn't see it myself.

Learn E and E (escape and evasion). It's worth it, but his mention of priorities is quite right. It's a secondary skill compared to other issues. Twilight is often the best, but daylight is good if you remember to move in the shadows or behind good cover. The hardest part may not be the people, it's the dogs. They will hear you and alert. Great video.

As far as seeing at night, I'd suggest that people get used to being able to maneuver around at night without a flashlight now so they at least learn what their own body's capacity to operate at night is. I grew up stargazing so I have a lot of experience doing stuff at night. Lots of other people had red lights but I was a kid and just got used to basically being able to see, albeit more in black and white. Then I had a buddy who was in the military who suggested to close one's eyes for a few seconds and focus on the darkness inside of your closed eyes and, when you open them, you can always see a bit better in the dark. I have also noticed that my birdwatching binoculars are outstanding at night too but you have to have that night vision going already. I think I am personally blessed with superior abilities to see at night so I basically figure that most other people would use a flashlight to get anywhere that I hide at night and I also have a flashlight so I can blind the shit out of them if they do come up on me in the dark.

Oh yeah and I have also found that overcast skies tend to reflect the ambient light kind of like a lampshade so that it's a bit easier to see at night than it would otherwise be since the clouds disperse the light kind of everywhere. Of course the clouds have to be high enough but they usually are around here.

The candle trick I use is to buy a 100-pack of those little tea candles and aa pack of round tins with screw-top lids. 3 tea candles and a tiny Bic lighter easily fit inside one of those round tins and don't rattle when done properly. Unscrew lid, light 1-3 candles, place inside Firebox or flat-pack stove to protect from wind and done. Each candle burns for about 5-6 hours. I put a CANDLE label on the tin lid so I know what it is and at least one goes in every bag and vehicle I have. Much cheaper than buying the Exotac candles.

Good video. Good concepts. This is what we do when setting up a patrol base. Your only going to be in the area just to sleep. so what 8 hrs max? More like 6 hrs. If you have several other persons in your group, set 5 meters apart in a 360 degree defense. two hour watch per person. So again actually you be getting 4 to 6 hrous sleep. Setup just after dusk up packed and moving on just be for dawn. Or depending to situation and times of avoidance, might rest during the day and move at night. Try placing masking tape over your light source white and red light. It will defuse it even more. I look at lights as not to be use to see where your going, but to be use for some absolutely task that need to be done withing 12 to 18 inches near you. Excellent video. Thank you.

Also never bother to carry extra such a mattress , I used brows from a spruce tree crossed them an in layers and built them high enough for me to have a mattress and soft enough to lay on also gave me scent cover also. For in the morning I smelled like a spruce tree lol. there alot of things that you can do but be like a SPONGE and soak up all you can for the future .

Night vision is the wrong option. Thermal is much preferred as you can see body heat from anything even when hiding. You can see things in pitch dark that radiates heat, you can see if a vehicle is recently be running or not, you can see if someone has been around by footstep left behind, you see if an abandoned building is actually abandoned or not and if there is electricity as thermal can see the thermal heat. I have a thermal in my survival kit as it is a multiple purpose item.
@erwin643

"Night vision" is a general term, referring to both thermal and light amplification. The only problem with thermals is that they can't see through glass (i.e., driving).

I started using a black plastic cap on my Fenix flashlight that had a flat lens so it wouldn't get scratched. I drilled a hole in it to make it slip on easier without a vacuum and the result is a much narrow beam of light if I turn it on with the cap on. I also have Photon Freedom mini lights in red as well as what they call Night Vision Green (a rather bright green, nothing to do with nods)

I do that same thing with my hand over the light just to make sure I'm not leaving anything at my fort when I head out after dark so as not to be seen. I also want to make sure that it looks as much like the rest of the nature there as possible but I can usually see that without the light. The main thing is not to forget any of my tools there since I might need them at home.

There is a sincere question at the end: I have all of the kit to build ground shelters like that, and I have practiced with it in case I need it, but I choose to leave other gear at home so that I can also carry a litefighter tent. The reason I do that is because I worry about things climbing in the bed with me while sleeping on the ground like that and thus I don’t get good sleep. Is that a real issue or am I worrying over nothing? If it is an issue, how do you guys mitigate that?
@SurvivalDispatch
@SurvivalDispatch Жыл бұрын
Usually it is an irrational fear. Snakes and other crawly things typically don’t want to bite you unless they are threatened. Sleeping on the ground exposed like this you will have things crawl on you from time to time. Your warmth and that of a fire will draw them out sometimes. Almost always harmless insects and spiders. Bug nets are great in really buggy areas. In the summer, I like a hammock with a big net. More nights outside will allow you to relax a bit more and get a better nights sleep.

Thing is learn your environment. Where I live it is a high mountain dessert. Much different than trees and rolling hills. We have sagebrush, cactus and in them are things you may not wish to visit like rattlesnakes and scorpions, not to mention black widows and brown recluse spiders. Question to me is what condition would it take for you to abandon your vehicle to hoof it somewhere safe? So yep out here a tad on the fuzzy side to evade and hide.

I don’t think focusing on a year’s worth of food is a priority. Imagine the scenario you’re proposing. You’re having to move locations. So you’re going to have to store a portion of your food at your buyout location. And what happens after the year? Did you account for the growing needs of your children? Focus on skills that will feed you, and you’ll be much better off than focusing on a full year of prepped food.
