One of the things I use to look for are spider webs that are crossing trails in the early mornings. That's a sure way to know if something or someone has been through there.

SERE school teaches BLISS for sight selection : Blend(into surroundings ), Low ( to the ground,I.e. low silhouette), Irregular (shape) , Small ( in size), Secluded ( location , I.e. the thicker the brush the better) I would add that motion gives you away. Stillness pays off. I have had people walk past me and have no clue I was there. I wasn’t well hidden so I didn’t move until they passed. Had I moved I would have been spotted. At another time I had someone stop and take a smoke break right next to me while I was on an anti poaching operation…wasn’t spotted. And yes the poachers were caught. Good stuff Jason.

Just getting off the trail several yards can be enough. There have been backpackers missing for years found just off trail. Even with brightly colored gear.

When speaking about discretion don't forget to mention noise discipline. Sometimes even when people can't see a campsite, they can hear a campsite, especially at night when sound can travel farther. If you are by yourself try to keep noise and movement to a minimum. If you are with others definitely keep talking to a minimum, or to a low whisper at the very least.

If you suspect that someone may be following you up the trail I was taught to travel some distance past your observation post or hidden camp before you quit the trail so you can see who is following if that is a worry. The old style cowboy bedroll I used when I started backpacking and camping as a kid in the early 60's was just an oversize canvas tarp with snap hooks and Pendleton wool blankets. The "matress" was first move the rocks out of the way and pile up grass or leaves on the ground. This much heavier than what you are showing. The new equipment you have is much better. I haven't slept on the ground on purpose for many years now. From now on it's a camp cot in a tent or camp trailer. I kinda miss the adventure though.

Thanks for showing your approach to a real situation. I remember you and Alan talking about using a M81 Mil Poncho during one episode for stealth buyout and observation and a similar location. So I painted one side of my M81 poncho with tan and different browns to match leaf debris. Louisana hiker showed how he rigged up his poncho with the M81 poncho liner attached at each corner, and how he would burrow under neath it. Providing both a tent and blanket. So I have done the same but added a Survive Outdoors Longer quiet Mylar blanket to it. I also carry a full zip mattress full length which can be doubled for extra padding or insulation or to get my boots off of really cold snow or ground. I spray painted the folding matt as well, tan and browns on one side gray on the other. The Mylar is safety pinned to the poncho liner. I used to clear packaging tape to reinforce where I will pin it with large safety pins. So it can be quickly be set up as a tent or used as a waterproof blanket and can extend down to lower temperatures in conjunction with extra clothing. Which allows me to set up and break camp quickly. Below 45 to 40 F I bring a small Summer bag. I unzip it but leave a foot box to put my feet and legs below the knees and drape the feast over me like a quilt. This allows for freedom of movement. I use a alcohol stove and two cup thermos for cold camp. If I wake up chilled the hot drink is a life saver.

That looks like a pretty nice setup. I've got a similar one with the MSS bivy and Big Agnus sleeping pad. One of the hardest things for me is to decide what not to bring over what to bring. Before I know it, my pack is too bulky and too heavy. I want options to be prepared, hammock, inflatable mattress, rain gear, ground pad, etc... it gets out of hand quickly.

Jason: I really like watching your videos. I just ordered an MSS bivvy, can't wait till it arrives. I'm curious; do you ever worry about waking up ticks and other critters that might be in the dead leaves during the cold season? I've thought about spraying around the outer opening of the bag with permethrin. Your thoughts?

again... a power bank and some heating pads will always be my last resort when it comes to extreme cold, a lightweight sl. bag and a fleece insert are my layers, a poncho, tarp, and mylar are always with me, and a mattress and a mat too... I will add a camo net to the collection and I'm ready ... I forgot!... an army woolen blanket, cut in the middle serves me as a ''poncho liner'' and has so many uses...

While hunting, we were always told to make exaggerated high steps, up and down, slowly. Minimizes your presence buy less disruption. Dragging your heels like normal walking turns foliage and releases smells indicating your presence to game animals. Same with humans, you can smell fresh disruptions like damp,moldy overturned leaves and fresh dirt smells.

While using my sleep system in bad weather without a tent I would put my gortex jacket on backwards, so I could keep my arms and face out of the bivy sack and fill it up with my wet exhaust air. ( and Keep my rifle handy… army thing 😂)

Do like deer do, crawl into a thicket but, cut you out an area within the thicket big enough to set up your sleep system. If you must have fire dig a hole to make a fire pit deep enough to hide the fire. When sleeping in a thicket you're out of sight and if by chance someone did find out you were in there there's no way they could sneak up on you without you hearing them.
@michaelreynoldsok

The MSS bivvy punches above its weight. It’s Goretex, so its pretty much bombproof (rain, wind, abrasions). I’ve slept in driving rain in that bivvy, and been perfectly fine. Great video.

I bought one recently, and it's impressive for the size, weight, and cost. I've only practice ran it indoors so far, but it is definitely breathable and will add several degrees of comfort range. People say it is wind and water resistant as well. I think it would be a rock solid bivvy for sitting under a poncho.

All good info. If someone needs a fire to cook, do it in the middle of the day. Where the second goal is to cook food. The first being to be "undetected". I did use what many call a "Smugglers Fire". Dig a hole in the ground at least 6 - 8" deep. Pile ALL the dirt in a cone or on a tree bark. Or some way to be able to snuff out the fire in ONE SECOND with no/minimal smoke. Fire is just twigs and only enough time to heat water or cook food. PS: If you can time it right at early "dusk". Enough light to see what you're doing and be done and fire out it 10 minutes. Difficult for others to see at dusk. - - - unless they have an IR scope!

About the best set up on you tube, everyone wants to make a huge shelter and move a bunch of stuff around, thats not stealthy. This you could find early in the day and wait for dusk to go into and still be able to set up.Overnight no one is going to bother you especially if you don't make a fire. Of course if you are trying to be evasive or make a semi permanent place, you need to make changes , but 1 or 2 nights this is great.

The other side of the leaf litter is it makes it hard to sneak up on you. You can't really try and sleep in a thicket in my part of the world. That's where the boogy bear lives, a.k.a. hogs, bobcats, harvester ants, etc. But if you can put a thicket between you and the trail you are not going to run into any zombies, they get hung on the thorns! And good video btw.
