Belthanos and this army of renown have really pushed me over the edge into getting into Sylvaneth, even if the ability to play without trees doesn't stick around in 4th I can still see it as a good way to get started collecting. That said I really do hope they branch off (heh) and give Sylvaneth players two kinds of play styles like there is with Seraphon in 4th though.

Arch-Revenant with Warsinger for +3" of movement + the Kurnothi Warhorn means you have Kurnoth Hunters with 8" movement that can run and charge. Fuckin' ey.

Would really like it if Armies of Renown stick around if they allowed allying in the core army. You army retains the intent and function, and allied units don't get special rules. But they keep making armies that can't have wizards which is frustrating.

I'm really excited by this model and warscroll. I'm interested in Warhammer and I love Sylvaneth, but I haven't been able to pull the trigger just yet. I can come imagine this being a very aggressive list that isn't great at defending, but I really do hope the army of renown gets more rules- specifically to increase durability. Kurnoths have 5 wounds per model which, even with a 3+ save is not incredible for 200+ points per unit. In all of my list building, I always include Lady of Vines for her 5+ ward spell. I worry about the kurnoth hunters getting shredded without that. It seems like kurnoth hunters are actually quite weak compared to units of similar points in other armies. I think what makes them strong is being able to teleport to hit almost anywhere, then strike and fade back to safety. With a whole army of them, I'm not sure how they'll fare. Other than that, I am very interested in this army. I love kurnoth hunters models and warscrolls. I even theorycrafted a kurnoth heavy list shortly before Belthanos was announced. And I love the mechanic where the revenant seeker can bring back models. I just have trouble fitting them into lists normally. This army certainly makes that easier!

This guy just seems -good-. Opens up a new style of play for Sylvaneth, as well as just being a solid scroll. Think Sylvaneth benefits more from him than SCE do from Relictor-on-Dagron in comparison, and also think this guy could still be good in whatever 4E is.

So you pick a screen as your quarry... Kill it turn 1 and then be plus 1 to the table for the rest of the game. Seems a pretty good way to hit the better bonuses going later into the game.

I'm not sure I agree that he's fightier than Ionus. He's certainly close, but Ionus can do 33 damage with his ranged attack, plus D3 every hero phase, plus the prayer damage. So you're looking at average 37 damage output potential on a unit that can't heal. Belthanos sits at 28 and his damage drops off DRASTICALLY at 7 wounds because of how his bracket works. He loses 9 damage potential to go from 28 to 19. Other than that though I think you're right, he's great.

@philipbowles5397 Belthanos' Average damage is 10 ya. Ionus is 15 when you add his ranged. The cap is higher, so ya you're right, he can spike higher. But the rend on Belthanos isn't higher. It's higher on average, but they both have attacks at -2 and -3. Scour will do additional damage if you hit your opponent with unleash hell. It'll do additional damage if you hit something that can never heal. And ya the prayer is on a 3+ but it's 18". So even without a chain, it still hits for D3. Plus he can auto chant if he wants, so it can be guaranteed. So you're looking at 17 damage on average most of the time.

@@philipbowles5397 mhm, I'm not arguing those things. What I said, plain and simple, was that I didn't agree that Ionus is less fighty, which is what Rob said. Also, I don't ROUND UP when it's less than .5 because if it's less than .5 you're averaging low not averaging high. So it's not 12 in my books, it's 10. The likelihood of scour happening IS high since on a unit that doesn't heal, it never goes away. You can unleash at 6", which means the unit you're hitting doesn't have to charge Ionus. When it's your turn, you can hit multiple units with his ranged attack, with 9 attacks you could likely hit at least 2 units comfortably and do 1 single damage to scour them. He blatantly has more output than Belthanos. Not to mention the drop off from his table is significantly less. At 7 wounds Belthanos loses 9 damage, Ionus loses 2. So over the course of multiple rounds, Ionus will completely outmatch Belthanos. Don't get me wrong, I love the model and his rules (Belthanos) I was only stating that I didn't agree that he was more fighty.

@@philipbowles5397 scour can effect ANY unit. I feel like you're thinking it's only working on heroes. Units that can't heal make up 90% of the game. Heroes can usually heal sure, but alot of armies can't. Orruk warclans can't heal outside of a warchanter. Ogors can heal once per game basically. Gitz have no healing. Rally doesn't count. Returning models count. Most armies can't "heal" their squad units. So being able to spread scour over multiple units, not "most" of them having a 3+, I don't know where you think most units have a 3+ save. Average right now is closer to 4+ skewing high towards 5+. So alot of times you can hit 2 units at the start of the game, and TWICE per phase (end of EACH hero phase) they might take D3. Those units will potentially take D3 9 times. If you hit 2 units per round, the numbers are inconceivable because there's so many variables. Not only that but even if a unit heals, it only removes the scour, the heal is negated. Which on something like a Zombie Dragon that just got hit with unleash hell and now they can't heal 6 wounds in the next combat phase, is detrimental to that unit. It may be alot to keep track of, but it's easy to make some scour tokens and it's a dice game. So I'm Kool with it. It has way more effect and power than just chip damage. But that's also a big part of it, he also shut off inspiring presence, adding insult to injury if they took some chip damage and now can't inspire to save models from battleshock. Anyway, I think we've said all that needs to be said. I personally like Ionus, I think he's incredibly powerful and I'm excited for him being in the game.

@philipbowles5397 it's 100% NOT optional. Read it again. Word for word it says "When a player uses an ability that allows them to heal any wounds that have been allocated to a unit, INSTEAD of healing ANY wounds allocated to that unit, that unit IS no longer soulburned." It is not optional. It turns off that healing. It's not even about the damage. It shuts off healing. Period.

Honestly I think its an actively terrible way for new players to get into the hobby. You hit it on the head with the "don't drop a bunch of money for something that's going to only be here for 6 months." Having a very narrow collection of units that only work in one way is just going to set a new player up for failure really quick.
