The nail polish smell is acetone.....when distilling, the first fraction to come through is the methanol, after that what they call the "heads" (a mixture of ethanol and other chemicals) will start to come through, and acetone is one of the chemicals (present in fermentations) that gets concentrated with distillation.

Thank you for your content . I have a old whiskey barrel I intend to use for hard cider, but there’s separation in the planks because it’s so dry. Is it ok to use City tap water in the swelling process ?

I sincerely hope you salvaged the bourbon left in them...Buffalo Trace is good Kentucky bourbon. As I understand it, bourbon can only be barreled in new barrels, and they are supposed to be White Oak - 53 gallons per barrel. I'm more of an Elijah Craig man, myself...but they both are lovely drops. Can't wait to see what you put in them...Cheers!
