Yeah, the Black Templars are pretty intense. Comparing them to the battle sisters, and your thoughts at the end seemed pretty accurate to me! What you said about TTS might be truer than you know... Even in lore, Rogal Dorn might've (figuratively) facepalmed about Sigismund's zeal for the Emperor during the Horus Heresy. I wouldn't say that Dorn wanted Sigismund dead, but as the first Emperor's Champion, he basically went out solo to some degree, with the duty of slaying any Chaos champions he came across. It was probably a great honour, could've been a suicide mission for many other marines, but it at least kept Sigismund busy lol I say he was the first Emperor's Champion, because after they became the Black Templars in the Second Founding, *pretty much* each crusade fleet had a Champion. That's to say - if I recall the lore well enough - the Black Templars have ten Black Swords, one per crusade fleet, though as the video said, fleet numbers vary. The Templars pray before battle and if a battle brother has visions of big E, the chaplains verify this and dub him the Emperor's Champion for that crusade, and for so long as he lives, generally. These champions give their range of minis something to make up for the lack of librarians. Another Second Founding chapter directly formed from the Imperial Fists legion are the Crimson Fists. They've been in the lore for ages, and you'll easily find a few well known illustrations of them making heroic last stands. So yes, they are far fewer in number than the Black Templars, and indeed both chapters' marines are smart, it's just that Crimson Fists value reason instead of zeal, despite the last stands. Their motto is "No Matter the Odds!" and they're also fairly kind, even in adversity, especially their chapter master. There's a tender lore moment about that... all in good time though 😊 Great job doing this research before Helsreach too! The only other thing you might want to be familiar with are other special marine roles. Specifically Chaplains, in black, with skull masks and other regalia of office, and their head, the Reclusiarch; Techmarines (often but not always in the red of Mars, due to their Mechanicus training) and their head, the Master of the Forge. Then we have apothecaries in somewhat white armour under a chief apothecary. That's plenty to understand the Black Templars for a start, but *most* other chapters have four ranks of librarians under the chief librarian, with mostly deep blue armour (Space Wolves and White Scars are obvious exceptions here).
@ti8ick6 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment, I guessk I could look up some info on the roles you mentioned to have an idea before I watch Helsreach. Hope you have a wonderful day!

Black templar numbers are always vague, which is partly a writing choice as it gives players more freedom in their collecting, but they're estimated to have anywhere from 3000 to something like 30000 marines. As a footnote, the limit is 1000 battle brothers, or full marines, so scouts, neophytes, and mobile fleets are often not counted towards this limit. The numbers therefore are likely higher than stated. For context, the next largest chapter is the Space Wolves, who are the most divergent of the original legions, and field 2500-3000 marines across 12 independent double strength companies
@tylermcroy67206 ай бұрын
The Codex Astartes states that the rule on chapter numbers can be waived if that chapter is on a crusade, so the Black Templars manipulated this loophole by declaring that they are on an eternal crusade, thus allowing them to ignore the rule about legion building.

Not really, word bearers legion was built entirely around religion and the establishment of the imperial cult with any means necessary, their only purpose was to preach and worship and spread the word, their appeal for the cult was morbose, obsessive, almost on the edge of insanity, to a point that when their “god” rejected them they found other gods to worship. The black templars don’t preach, they don’t spread the word, they don’t waste time converting worlds and checking every single citizen to see if they pray 10 times a day, BT purpose is war. Black templars aren’t obsessive in their way of worshipping, they’re rather pious, firm, stoic, unyielding, self-righteous, self-punitive, they don’t worship for the sole purpose of doing it but because they truly believe in the Emperor’s Divinity and make the extermination of his enemies their unique goal. That’s why if the Black Templars were in place of the word bearers they would’ve just accepted their faith, because they knew they failed their lord, just like Sigismund did with Dorn: when faced with failure in his father eyes, simply asked him to cut his head instead of betray him. The fact they still pray following the imperial cult, a piece of paper wrote by Lorgar himself, doesn’t prove anything considering the entire imperium do, you could argue that the white consuls are literally word bearers because they follow the imperial cult too at this point.

The Codex Astartes states that the rule on chapter numbers can be waived if said chapter is on a crusade, so the Black Templars declared that they are on an eternal crusade to continue the Emperor's Great Crusade to get around the no legion building rule. The exact number of their chapter is unknown and often shrouded in secrecy, but it's estimated to have somewhere around 6,000 active astartes with who knows how many in reserve.

The 10.000 is pretty old lore at this point. The smaller legions were 80k+, the average is around 130k. (depending the Alpha Legion numbers...). Though numbers are so wildly different that it is nearly meaningless to speak of them. For example the Space Wolves Great Companies were said to be about a chapter size each, yet we saw the composition of some and they should be around 300 marines.

The difference is the Chaos Gods are chosen (and choose you) based on your inclinations. It is your own deification you follow. The followers of the Emperor change to follow the Emperor's will and goals. The Chaos Gods bribe you, tempt you, and then enslave you. Instead, when the people become the Emperor's true servants, they get their reward after completely submitting everything to him. The reward usually sucks but given the Eternal Sacrifice of the Emperor for Mankind, what do you expect following his example?

Not the best Templars vid. They miss a lot of the coolest stories and important details. Look up the history of Siggy. Dude was wild. Also, the title of Emperor's Champion now passes down from elite warrior to elite warrior. The Champ can't back down from any duel, and if he's killed, whoever retrieves his black blade is bound by those same rules. The champ is always a badass. Also, they can have as many marines as they want because the codex allows it "while on a crusade." Siggy started the Eternal Crusade, and it still goes on 10k years later. But this isn't just a loophole. They are legit on a crusade. Each BT marine will fight more battles more often than marines of other chapters and the BTs have more marines, so overall they are responsible for a lot of the war the Imperium engages in. The reason they don't like librarians is cause psykers go crazy and summon demons, and they don't take those chances. they don't have issues with Grey Knights, cause none have ever fallen to chaos. Due to their zealotry and rules, BTs don't fall to chaos. In some ways they are the epitome of the space marine. They are true servants with no desire for power or care for politics. They are totally devoted to one cause: destroying the enemies of mankind, foreign or domestic. They once killed a corrupt politician cause he was a danger to the Impirium, then happily returned to crusading. Are they extreme? Yes. Do they get a bit carried away at times? Also yes. But at the end of the day they're the big crazy guy you want on your team.
@palpat84316 ай бұрын
A fact that wasn't mentioned about the chains: this is actually originally a tradition of the World Eaters Legion, who turned traitor and became corrupted and enslaved by the Chaos God Khorn. The reason why the Black Templars also practice this, is because Sigismund was friends with Kharn, the First Captain of the World Eaters before they turned traitor. Kharn shared this practice with Sigismund, and the latter happily adopted it, and from his example the Black Templars as a whole began the practice in their Chapter.

I don't like the Black Templars because the Imperial Creed is one of the things that annoys me most about the Imperial factions and space marines are basically the only Imperial sub-faction that don't have to adhere to it... but the Black Templars do it anyway. They dive head first into the thing I go to space marines to avoid, so that very much sinks them in my estimation.
@ardeeseus6 ай бұрын
They are not entirely "F*ck off Codex Astartes" tho, more like they're exploiting a loophole in the Codex Astartes wherein, recruitment/number of battle brothers are not limited to 1000 (+) marines because of the provision in the Codex that as long as they are in an Active Crusade (constantly in battle, along multiple fronts with little to no reprieve or rest) their numbers/recruitment are not to be limited.

Yeah a lot of people consider the Black Templars to be some of the “worst” “good guys” in that they fight for the Imperium (which calling them a good entity is debateable, I think saying they’re generally the protagonist is more fair) and are willing to commit the most atrocities that they deem necessary to further the survival of the imperium. They also are ironically kind of one of the more heretical chapters while also being one of the most loyal, in that they are extremely loyal to the God Emperor (or their idea of him) more than the Imperium itself which is shown when they blow up the ship trying to bring them Primaris marines at the order of Guillaman (who is running the Imperium at the time) because they believe it’s blasphemy to imply that someone could make an upgrade of something the Emperor has created (the OG space marines). So in their loyalty to their idea of the God Emperor they have quite literally attacked and killed Imperial allies as well a Custodes, which is kinda a huge deal
