My wife tripped on the sidewalk in Morelia and broke her nose upon hitting the pavement while she was walking alone to do some errands in our neighborhood here. Fortunately the kindness of strangers saved the day. She was helped into the nearby farmacia consulto where the doctor immediately checked her at no cost. Together, they were able to call me to come pick her up. No serious injury besides bruises and a slow healing nose. We are so grateful for the Mexican people time and time again.

So glad you're ok. When I first saw the thumbnail I thought you were mugged. Thank goodness it wasn't that serious. I lived in Germany for 8 non consecutive years, but I didn't have to worry about language since the hospitals near me were run by Americans. 🇺🇸🇩🇪🇲🇽

I lived in Mexico for 8 years until last year. I always kept a card on me listing blood type, rental address and manager phone, US emergency phone, Mexico emergency phone if possible, local primary care doc if applicable etc. I also kept a hospital bag with change of clothes, pjs etc. I always had a credit card where transferred the largest available cash advance to use for hospital stay.

Glad you are okay. Great video. Don't wear the kind of footwear that your dogs can step on and trip you up anymore. As for your beautiful dogs, I googled around and found this: Yes, several organizations can help find new homes for dogs after their owner dies, including "2nd Chance 4 Pets," "Pet Peace of Mind," and some local animal shelters, which often have programs specifically designed to help rehome pets in such situations; you can also set up a pet trust to designate a caregiver for your dog in your will. Key points about these organizations: Focus on rehoming: Most organizations primarily focus on finding new, suitable homes for the pet after the owner passes away. May offer temporary care: Some organizations might provide temporary care for the pet while they search for a new home. Pet trusts: Creating a pet trust in your will is a way to legally designate someone to care for your pet after you die and provide funds for their care.

How Scary - so glad you are ok! It is nice that you have that medical background to know about that lucid interval of a subdural hematoma, and made the critical decision to have your neighbors check on you in those specified intervals. This episode hit home for me because I will be 50 soon and live alone with huge Italian Mastiff dogs, who are prone to bump into me, knock me over accidentally, etc. This is more and more of a concern the older I get. Great video and reminder to all of us that having a will is a good idea, even if we survive, to let our family members know what to do if something were to happen and we were in the hospital. Thank you for this video and so relieved to hear you are ok!

So sorry you are dealing with such trauma...pretty scarry! FYI...you are hardly a baby, l have been following you for some time. You are actually a very brave, strong and independent woman. I actually admire how brave you have been travelling throughout Mexico on your own with your two fur babies! I am on my own as well...trying to decide if Mexico is for me full time. Currently in SM. Saddly, I will miss out on the current residency visas requirements, and if I decide to move from Canada full time, it will be a little more complicated in the New Year. I have very much enjoyed the content of your videos and thank you for putting them out regularly. I hope that you have a speedy recovery and that your research going forward allows you to gather all the necessary answers that you need for your life in Mexico in the coming years. Take care!

Oh Mora, I'm sorry about your accident and happy to see you healing and feeling stronger. Thank you for this helpful wake-up call. I travel solo and often and have had some bad falls while hiking or walking. It's useful to know about the Duty Pharmacy system present in much of Europe and the rest of the world. I've used this in Spain and Argentina most recently. Pharmacies there have a sign in the window showing the address of the nearest duty pharmacy. This means there is typically one pharmacy in town that has someone available after hours for emergencies. Pharmacists often get extensive medical training, akin to doctors, to help them assess and address problems. In Argentina, a kind man drove me to the duty pharmacy (about 10 PM Sunday), and I walked in bleeding from a bad fall. I just showed the pharmacist, and he gathered supplies to clean, medicate, and bandage all the scrapes. You are wise and lucky to have made some good friends and live near your landlord, who checked on you and helped with the dogs. Your plan to get your affairs in order and write and post them clearly (in case you're incapacitated) is smart. It would be good to draft a will, power of attorney (for your son?), and medical directives outlining your wishes. No one wants to do these, but they are vital. It would be smart to share and discuss these with your family too, so they will know what you want if you are unable to express it at some point.

First time to see this site, but as a 75 year old former ICU nurse and RRT traveling in Lima at the moment it seemed like a good day to view. Although slow, I still run and today did not quite make a curb and went down with no harm done. Made a joke about what score I got for this: I said a 10 but a passerby said more like a 9. The reality is that I do travel independently, run, and hike independently and here in Peru at altitudes often exceeding 15,000 ft. The risks are real but so far I have not required hospitalization for any reason. I am so happy that you seem fine. You handled it all so well, making good decisions, Although as you note, you did not lose consciousness and that would have meant potentially dire consequences. Your story gave me something to think about. We do the best we can and try to learn but I will be out running tomorrow. Good luck to you.

Thank you for sharing this. I 'm somewhat older, single (long time widower), looking at leaving the US while also working to put together all the elements you mentioned. I suppose it will depend on the country/town, but one consideration I plan to try to sort out is long term care as I have no plans (or near enough money) to end up in a US long term care facility. I suppose costs might parallel overall medical costs everywhere, but end of life or extended old age/disability care for people who leave the US is not something I hear discussed.

Oh and the advice about the hospital and having someone with you is not for nothing. In Mexico, all persons who enter the hospital have someone with them. My understanding is that the nursing staff does not do that - or at least the care is very limited. It may be in certain hospitals, I’m not sure, but they were not kidding about that advice. Take care!!

Mora, I am sorry this accident happened to you and I am glad that you are doing fine! A similar thing happened to me in Mexico - from one second to the next life changed, as I broke the elbow and the right arm in 4 places by falling in Puerto Vallarta, where I had surgery. Unfortunately, at the discharge they would not unhook me from the IV at the private hospital until I paid twice more money than they initially quoted me, which also made me think how to protect myself in a future ( besides having insurance ). One never thinks something like this will happen to you, until it does, but still - it is hard to think through all the possible scenarios when you are alone in a foreign country. Please get better soon!

We were more than pleased with an American hospital in Playa del Carmen, but those are usually where the tourists are. Two years ago, I slipped on Halloween candy here in the States, needed a partial hip replacement, and broke my shoulder. I fell on tiles like yours. I had great neighbors, but since then, I purchased an Apple watch that dials the emergency nr and who is your emergency number to call when you fall. If you are ok, you can stop the dialing. I doubt it would have been so tragic if there had been a rug or even wood floors instead of tiles. I am so sorry you had such an experience, but I am glad you are now recovering. there is an advantage to cities with expats for help. Here is the link for where they have American hospitals. The staff and doctors are all from Mexico and are fantastic. Thank you for reminding Expats what to be sure to follow. You give such interesting and open information. Thank you!

You sound good, thank God. So this experience has opened Pandora's box. I am in Morelia. Recently, the expats here had a seminar. Reps from the hospitals, IMMS, Bienstar, and Red Cross (Cruz Roja) were there to explain what they provide. I am quite sure that the same group gave their presentation in Patzcuaro within the last several months. Perhaps the hospital in Patzcuaro could tell you about that. My next comment is about a similar experience I had and how I was provided for, thousands of miles from my home in New York.

This is timely, Mora. I’m so very sorry you got hurt and were scared. I can well imagine. But I’m also very relieved to know that it wasn’t a really serious situation in which you ended up in hospital. The timely part is that your questions and concerns are something I am in the process of addressing at this very moment. My husband and I live permanently in La Paz. We are both 66 years old and bless my mom, she was a planner and a very organized woman and I learned a thing or two from her. I have gone to a nortario and asked questions about advanced directives, a will and about a POA here in Mexico. You do most of these things through a nortario, not a lawyer. Advanced directives and the person who is kind of like your POA are all part of your will here. I am also writing up our medical information, putting our doctors name and contact information, our preferred hospital in case an ambulance has to come and I’m putting this in sheet protector with a Res Cross symbol on it and putting it by our front door. I am also putting advanced directive information and the POA contact I formation in my purse/wallet. This was something an ambulance driver told me to do as they will look for and take it with me if I was in a really bad accident, so they could get my identification information. They said not to put it in the glove compartment or other console space because they won’t look there. I’m also putting our preferred hospital in the information. I am also making sure it is all in Spanish. I have been particularly concerned about my DNR/DNI preference and hospital preference as I don’t want to be taken to the really expensive private hospital here. Doctors here in Mexico have the freedom and privilege to work from any hospital and we have a wonderful geriatric doctor who speaks English. I am not fluent in Spanish yet and will continue to work towards that but my husband never will be because he has lingering mild aphasia from a stroke 20 years ago. Planning and begging prepared for these types of potential life emergencies is very important and I have come to realize that many Americans and Canadians believe their wills and advanced directives they have well established home countries will work for them here and they won’t. Mexico has very specific ways and documents required for these types of needs and it would be wise for full or part time residents and even visitors, to check with a nortario with questions and concerns. Just a visit to ask these things is usually free of charge!

Oh, plus I recently had a really big sinus surgery here to help with a long time chronic problem and the whole experience was a very good one. If I can not have medical care I need right here in La Paz or Los Cabo’s, I can easily fly to Mexico City to receive ANY kind of high quality care I would need for far less that returning to the states. So our plans are to seek all of our care here in our new permanent home of Mexico.

The costs leading up to and including my surgery, included multiple doctor visits and consultations, medications, two CT’s, one with contrast, the surgery including the anesthesiologist, a surgical assistant who had to fly to Los Cabo’s from Mexico City with two pieces of RENTED specialized equipment and the operating room rental for my three hour surgery all totaled a little over $3,000usd. The monthly insurance costs, deductible and co-pays in the states would have far exceeded this.

Here we are a week later; I hope you’re doing well. Do you feel like you’re all better? It’s no fun waiting around to heal up, especially when you carry a big reminder on your face for everyone to see! Here in Texas it’s hovering above freezing at night, and it’s rainy and cold during the day. Wouldn’t it be nice to spend some time in Mexico! ✈️🌴🏖️

Mora the nearest hospital capable of addressing any complications that MAY happen is the UGA or University of Guadalajara Medical School. Brain injuries are very tricky and you should monitor your balance, sensitivity to light and an increased desire to sleep. Keep well and keep us informed!

Oh! Blimey! You are so lucky, Mora, that it wasn't much worse. and thanks for the great insights and ideas. I just completed my second cataract surgery a couple of days ago. Very professional, modern clinic, well looked after. Luckily we have been adopted into our landlady's family here in Morelia, all doctors and lawyers, and it is so comforting to know they are there for us if anything happens. Hopefully we'll get to Patzcuaro soon and can have a cup of coffee... And yes, when a local is your friend, you are truly blessed and looked after. The kindest people...

As for your will, I recommend that you do it in the USA and register it in the county where you do it and that way, everything will be in order and send a copy to your children via email that way, you will have everything in order and be sure that you did it.

I’m sorry this happened to you. On the bright side, your place is amazing. The view of your back yard is beautiful. I’m a paramedic here in Los Angeles and I think you did the right thing by just assessing yourself and treating yourself with ice pack. People are always so quick to go to the hospital. I hate to say it, but the doctors can’t really do anything for a bump on your head. Of course they can do a cat scan and like you said, make sure you don’t have a bleed. But for the most part-art they would do the same thing. Give you an ice pack and give you a pat on the back.

Omg, I'm so glad that you didn't get hurt worse than you did! Your landlady sounds wonderful, it's good that she and your friend kept in touch with you and that you trust your driver. Anything out of the ordinary happening in a foreign country would put anyone on edge, you are not a "big baby", you are just normal. I have read on expat FB pages that you need a will in Mexico (through a Notario), even if you have one in the states which won't be valid there. I don't know if POA is a thing in MX but maybe you could look into it. Beautiful cat in your video!

Hospital patients in Mexico are expected to show up with someone to spend the night in the room with them. This is usually a relative, but I guess it could be anyone, but you gotta bring someone. Flying solo down here is dicy business. Glad you were not seriously hurt. Take care.

Oh my, sorry to hear that Mora but lucky it wasn’t a serious life threatening injury. Glad you’re doing much better. It’s scary how life can change in the blink of an eye. Speaking about the astronomical amount for medical expenses here in the USA, it’s downright sickening what it cost here. I live in California and last year I went to the emergency room for kidney stones, I’ve had time before so I knew what was wrong. I was there for an hour.. maybe a little more, i was the only one at the hospital’s emergency department since it was really in the morning and i got lucky it was only me at the time, they took for ever just to give me a shot for the pain. I was literally there for like an hour, my medical bill came to $5,000! Just to get a shot and have a doctor okay the shot, have a nurse give it to me and prescribe some medicine. Luckily I have insurance and didn’t have to pay but I find it insulting what they charged for a shot and being there for 1hr, they couldn’t cut that down to 10min, but they had me waiting in the little room for an hour…. $5,000! I still can’t believe it.
