I’m a fan, but I am seriously struggling with the value of coffee competitions. They seem to focus more on the “performance” than the actual creation of good coffees. An artist friend of mine, I think, encapsulates it best: “the more maximal the explanation, the more minimal the art.” I see this as being the case with the competition videos I’ve watched. It strikes me as being a pretentious if not masturbatory pursuit. I have much respect for the time and effort that the participants invest in it…but fundamentally, only latte art competitions are more useless. It’s an opinion. I could be wrong. But this is a sincere question. What’s the point, truly?

The point is in the taste of what is being served. The time invested in progress and innovation of all parts of the value chain. Arguably, the presentation in itself could be hard to relate to if you are not able to taste these brews/coffees. But that's also not where you find the most value. Most of the innovation in coffee brewing and green coffee sourcing the last 10 years have been originating from the competition formats.

I see your point and April's too, I kinda agree with both... I don't really care for coffee competitions, but I'm happy they exist. I may have another example: I like cars and races. Being in Europe I watched F1 since I was a kid, but they transformed the rules so much (so tight) that it took the fun out of it for me, I cannot stand to watch Formula 1 now. But I'm happy it exists because it's still the place were much of the new car tech is born, and then trickles down to other cars. F1 has lost his spirit for me (what you call "art" in your example) but I still think It's good it exists.
