So nice that you have rented a garden! We have a bit the same system here in the Netherlands for people who live in flats and still want some land. Btw, some tips and tricks: plants and soil are part of a whole ecosystem. The more diverse, the better it is. Weeds, contrary to their reputation, are actually good for the soil! So keeping a few here and there helps with soil fertility. Same goes for growing vegetables, diversity is best. Last final tip: i know it sounds crazy, but i’m convinced my plants like it when i touch them, talk to them, and just pay attention to them by making sure they’re comfortable. They are living being too! Have fun with your garden, can’t wait to see the result of your labour ☺️

Great Video, but a serious question: did you consider getting an small insertable wall? with the purpose as to avoid weeds/ plants and some insects not coming over from the neighbouring slots? since you can see at the end though that they also spread over from the sides.. having those small insert walls can help a but keeping the weeds under controll. Also prevents a bit the spilling/mixing over of your compost/ferts/ from your side to the neighbour and vice versa?

Ideally I would do raised beds or a hoop/green house. It keeps weeds, bugs and other nibblers, most diseases, and harsh weather out. If you can dig out most of the soil you can put down a weed net and some chicken wire to help weeds and gophers at least. If there's gophers in Japan.....

I'm lucky to have already been living in a village where the people around me are indirectly setting an example on how to live this way. Thank you Jun for being so inspiring! ^^
@Sagwafu5 жыл бұрын
Congrats on the garden bed! That's super exciting. :) I know its off season but I want to share some garden tips with you! The less you disturb the soil, the less weeds you will have and bigger, happier plants you will get. This is because you maintain the structure of the soil and don't disturb microbes that hang out with your plant's roots. These microbes break down materials in the soil and make nutrients more available to your veggies. For the next year, if you still have the plot, you can apply a heavy layer of compost on top in the spring to suppress weeds and plant into that. You can also use plastic over the plot as a protective barrier and create holes to plant into. If you apply compost and mulch consistently without churning the soil, you will feed the soil without upturning it and causing less weeds to sprout. This helps to keep the soil moist because the air pockets in the soil are preserved and act as a sponge. :) I also love Romanesco but have never grown it. This year I will because you both inspired me!

Since the Plot is so prone to weeds, it could be a good idea to put some gravel anywhere you arent planning to grow.
@97itachiuchiha5 жыл бұрын
Hey Jun, if you want to suppress the weeds and retain moisture I recommend mulching. An option for next season to skip the tilling of the ground is a method called "lasagna gardening". This is where you chop and drop the weeds and stack layers of cardboard/sticks/compost and manure repeatedly until you get the desired height. The cardboard acts as a suppression layer to the weeds underneath, smothering the plants below. This can make a sort of raised garden bed without having to haul in a bunch of soil or having to dig out the unwanted plants. Good luck with your garden!

Very envious of how 'fluffy' your soil is! Its interesting (to me) that you use a hoe to break up the soil, whereas in England we would use a fork.

As somebody who just did all of this with the terrible soil at my house (in addition to tearing out awful landscaping fabric), its deeply satisfying to watch other people doing it~

Jun! Cover the ground area with mulch/cardboard/plastic tarp to prevent weeds from growing.. And if you find weeds, just pull them out and leave them there to become compost. It will be alot less work.

Nice work. My family also farms. Prep tips, if you're looking for any: I mix in mushroom compost and soil-moist into the planting holes. Feeds all year and holds water in the heat of summer. Small gardens I've enjoyed planting: grocery vegetables like you've done, an herb and salad garden to cut greens from, and an herbal tea garden (chamomile, mint, lemongrass, etc.) Use all 3 every day so the work stays rewarding.

I was so relieved when you added compost! You'll very much need it to grow anything in that sandy soil. I'm so excited to see how your garden comes along!!

My husband grows the majority of the fruits and veggies we use. Because we live in a coastal town he uses raised beds to grow most of our food and he only grows organically so that includes raising his own worms and makes his own compost. It's a lot of work but he says it's relaxing so that's a plus. He built a greennouse now so I'm looking forward to see what he grows there.
