Fall is time to plant garlic and this week I"m preparing sandy, clay, and container soils for planting. The key to great garlic, is great soil!

Great video on improving the soil. We've got our garlic into a raised bed. We just need to protect it from our Minnesota winter! For us, it takes years to get good soil. We'll be entering our fourth growing season and the soil is just getting good!

Miss Bee, I have sandy sandy soil. I made my gardens so much much much better (because I live in a drought area where watering gets expensive fast nowdays) when I put half rotted branches, limbs and other wood items (I didn't use any lumber because who knows what it might be treated with. We get warned away from pressure treated wood, but they put anti mold stuff on just ordinary lumber if you didn't already know) The wood doesnt need to be really soft, but you want the wood to be already started in the rotting process so it holds more water. That's the point of this game, but there's an added bonus also. Because it's sandy soil, it was easy to dig. I dug down about 5 feet, put in a 2 foot layer of woody debris, and then covered with about half the soil I took out then I added the compost and mulch layers. The first year I noticed because i could go an extra day or 2 between deep waterings.. The second year everyone noticed Because during the first year the mycelium in the wood grew out and the second year it was feeding the plants and everything was ginormous! And luscious. And bountiful. Plus I still needed to add less water. I didn't break up the wood except to take limbs off branches enough that they stayed within the confines of their garden bed. This winter I'm digging out the next bednto do another. I'm going to cover the wood with the soil from the bed I already did and then see if it's time to add more wood to the first yet. Plus the 2nd bed will get the mycelium rich soil and hopefully get a headstart on that aspect. Enough about that: thanks for your video. It's really good and it helps make gardening accessible for everyone. I like that.

Wow! Thank you so much for sharing! Ive used old small branches under my clay soil raised beds, since we have so many trees here. At the sandy school garden, I may have to consider making beds. That sounds perfect. I live where it gets a lot of rain but the sand drains so quickly, it doesn’t hold well. Wonderful Information you’ve shared 😊

Don't usually comment on videos, but just wanted to say how informative the video was, it also went over details that I couldn't find in most other videos for this stuff. In particular thank you for touching on the importance of phosphorus for root development. Starting my first garlic raised bed this year, lot of videos either dont go over the importance of what type of fertilizer or even push high nitrogen which seems an odd choice for root vegetables. Having done potatoes before, too much nitrogen I think proved bad because it had tons of tall top growth but small potatoes.

Thank you for the positive feedback. You are right, too much nitrogen is not what garlic wants when being planted. It’s good for leaf growth but we want to focus on root development 😊Good luck with your garlic!

I love cooking with garlic. But I have a hard time growing it into really nice size bulbs. I will try again in the fall.
