Preparing Turmeric for Winter in a Cold Climate

Turmeric is a wonderful plant to grow in any climate, even though it is a tropical plant. Turmeric is frost sensitive and will not survive the winters of most of the Midwest and Northern states of the US. However, you can dig it up and bring the rhizomes into the house over the winter to protect it. You can use some of the rhizomes for cooking but you can also keep a bunch of it for planting in the spring. Sarah takes you through the fall harvest of turmeric and also shows you how to store it for the winter.

We Sri Lankans use turmeric powder in almost all of our curries along with coconut milk. To make turmeric powder you have to steam the yams until they are slightly soft and slice and dry either in the sun or an oven and then ground in to a powder. Powder made from well dried yams can be kept for a long time. A very small amount even be added to your casseroles or curries to give it a nice yellow colour 😊😊

Started out with one turmeric plant two summers ago, it grew as high as yours. From that plant, I replanted eleven tubers in a raised garden bed, they grew a little higher and gave us a better yield. Last spring, (end of October 2120) I planted into another raised bed with five centimeters of compost added to it, (fifty percent mushroom compost). Then I added ten centimeters of cane mulch on top. It is the first day of Autumn and the turmeric is over two meters tall. The trick is a good compost mixture and very little if any, fertilizer. Happy growing and remember, for the body to absorb turmeric one must use black pepper with it, it aids the digestion system to absorb it. From the land down under.

An easier way to harvest your Turmeric is to lay out a tarp. Lay the pot on its side and then roll it a couple of times to loosen the dirt and roots, then pull out the plant. Harvest rhizomes. Hope this helps.

I just pulled mine up yesterday. Nice mass of pieces. I took the green off, cut it into pieces and shoved it right back into the pot. One like yours. I saw a fat healthy worm so that was his reward for growing such a nice plant. My health food store sells them for $29/ lb. in the middle of the summer.

The flower also probably had seeds. I love turmeric so much. If you see the seeds harvest them too. I love ginger, and Jerusalem artichokes. I love to crunch on it as it has a lovely nutty flavor.

@Audrey Ando: if you have the opportunity and space to let it grow for 2 years the harvest is amazing, I got that too from a Friend in Thailand. Also you can put compost dirt on top of the pot to keep the warm.

Just harvested our first ever turmeric grown in four smaller pots here in northern France. I have been wondering how to keep the tubers going over winter so your comments have been very helpful. We grew ours in a polytunnel and next summer I will plant it in the greenhouse soil where I hope it will produce a larger crop. Thanks for your video.

I have some also. But I just bring the entire pot inside and baby it throughout the winter. I'm in Maryland, so I know it's way to cold in the winters here. I have never used any turmeric, fresh yet though only powdered from the store. Thank you I learned something today. I think I will also divide my up for more plants this year. Love your channel. Really enjoy all your tips, & tricks. But I'm not on a homestead. Just a little over a acre, mostly wooded. And can barely get a good eight hours of sunlight anywhere on my property. 😕 I even tried my front yard one year. Still not enough per day.

I saw on another turmeric video that there is usable turmeric up into the stem. So don't necessarily cut off at the bulb and throw the stem away. Peel the stem to reveal the root like substance.

Hey, so helpful to me as this is my first time growing with frost in a month or so...started my tuber ~ last Feb or so indoors, bought at health food store....then in ~ May after frost put in our greenhouse....bought a patio umbrella to shade it and my ginger, even though tropical, learned needed some shading...we have gorgeous plants and turmeric flower...your video most helpful..thanks from the hills of West Virginia!

Did you know that in Indonesia we use the leaves in a famous asian beef stew called rendang. To give it the authentic flavour en to soften the meat. I live in the Netherland and the leaves are very rare to get in the asian store. so I want to try to grow them myself.

Don't throw those small roots,collect them,dry them and can make Tea during Winter.We use leaves for preparing some types of sweets,also for rice broth if added smells gr8 apart from adding its medicinal properties.

That takes some dedication! Here in northeast Oklahoma, we probably have a fairly similar climate. We often get even a hard freeze toward the end of April and October might stay warm enough to not kill tomatoes until November.

You can use the leaf for cooking too. Just search indonesian food call it “ gulai “ the leaf make the food smell so good.

Wow this is interesting. I took thin sliced carrots a can of pineapple chucks and a 1/2” of ginger (made into very thin slivers) of ginger . Put them all in a sauce pan and cooked till carrots were slightly tender. Oh my I love it and will do again soon. I couldn’t eat it all at one time so Jared in and refrigerated it. Yum yum. I grew Ginger like you did the turmeric . Very easy and fun to see results. But I did it in-the house through the winter. Dug in Pot and broke off a piece as I needed. Easy pesy. Bought mystarter piece at Wal Mart.

That was a fantastic first year's harvest! And I bet Organic Heirloom (or not) Turmeric will fly off the stall at the market. I always thought Turmeric was Orange didn't realise that there were other varieties plus I thought they put down a tap root before growing their 'fingers' but yours was as near to Ginger. Are you going to be growing other varieties in the future now that this was such a success?

You would not believe how difficult it is to find complete information on prepping turmeric for winter in cold climates thank you, but did you ever do a back up video the next spring on restarting the plants in the spring ? This would help. I stopped watering and brought them in 6 weeks ago. Is there anything you can recommend that I do in the next 2 weeks to help the roots get through the winter I'll put them in the coolest area in the house in shredded paper in a card board box and bring them back out in march to restart them when its time to start my root stock and heirloom tomatoes for grafting . Thanks, we live in Maryland 10 miles east of D.C. and about the same climate as yours. Mike

How did they turn out after winter storage? I am wanting to store mine in the garage, where it gets cold but not freezing. Last year I tried leaving them in the pot with soil, and it rotted and hollowed out the rhyzome.

But I have had many failures with overwintering ginger and garlic. This year I successfully kept ginger overwinter in the garage for the first time. Watered sparingly when it got too dry, but not so much to rot it. I still don't feel I have a solid handle on it. I really want a tested and true answer.@@radrickdavis

Hi. Turn the plastic pot on its side, tramp on the side of the pot in a couple of places turning the pot then the whole plant will come out at once. No spade needed. XXX

Growing it in the UK is a challenge =D I had one piece grow less than 1/6 of the size of that beast. Tried to get 3 going the next year from the dregs of what was left, but ended up with just the very top of one plant and a few small roots - no lumpy bits due to not even frost temperatures. Yay.. o_O This year I managed to recover it and I have some lumpy bits left over. Some parts look like that have been eaten up by the plant, long hollow roots, I’m not sure if they are roots being odd, or deflates fingers. It got a bit cold and I left it until the tops browned and fell over. My plant was almost never outside as I feared night temperatures would stump it, also I was too lazy to go in-out every day lol. I wonder what temperature it can handle in the growing season before ill effects take place. I also planted it with the top of root exposed that seemed to help it stay strong. I suspect the moisture plus cold at the end of the year makes the top rot easy, thus how I lost almost everything previously. Unsure how much water they like. =D

I have been growing several years. Yes the hotter the better likes water. We are in Missouri so your should’ve even better. Start first in house transplant when it’s 50 degrees for lows outside

I grow turmeric indoors all year in Norway. I think I grow them for 8 years now. Regrov some and eat the rest. I use some leaves thinly sliced in stews. Learned here to store in sawdust and in another wideo in sand. I keept them in the freeser.

That looks more like ginger because how big they are. Turmerics are smaller with bright yellow vibrant color.

Great video, next time you might get a tarp and just empty your tub on to it then just shake the rhizome out of the soil and then dump the soil back into your tub. Just an idea.
